Windows 8.. blehh. I used it since the Dev preview was available and it has a lot of great finish to it but the whole "Metro" or "Windows 8 theme" whatever they're calling it now and if they got rid of that or made a version of it for desktops because the constant nag of going back and forth to a touch heavy OS. also Microsoft I don't plan on buying a touchscreen laptop or desktop. I use my computer for work and playing games.. games have become even less so the computer becomes used less and less lately. I don't foresee upgrading to 8 now that it is out. as far as gates giving his blessing to his companies products.. of course he is. if he says something against it he loses money and at his age he doesn't want to do that.. looks like your looking old these days bill!

Sorry the last minute blessing of the great Bill Gates cannot save Windows 8.

Was he reviewing Win8 on a desktop? No...

RUSENSITIVESWEETNESS

Can't handle change?

Fuck no. I just don't want anything that ugly, clumsy UI on my PC. And I don't give a fuck about a touch screen. I don't need one. Microsoft sucks dead donkey meat for forcing it on everyone. And they can shove those weak tablets up their asses.

Fuck Microsoft and fuck the employees spamming MaxPC with apologist bullshit.

U mad, Bro?

Why am I not surprised?
If M$ market share and stock price takes a plunge means he will have much less $$$$$ to give around...

I remember when Windows 95 came out. I heard quite a bit of complaining back then. The two main differences between then, and now are the fact that there are far more computer users now than back in '95, and we have this nifty place where those that want to complain every single time an article about it comes out, can do so. So people, before you listen and follow the advice of all the nay sayers here, do yourself a favor, check it out, if you like it, get it, if you don't, stick with what you have. Windows 7 is not going anywhere anytime soon. They will continue support for it for a good number more years. This will not be the death of Microsoft, so don't pay attention to that garbage either. This won't usher in the age of Linux, much to Silencer's dismay. It's just another year, another release of Windows, and life goes on.

avatar

maxeeemum

I agree!

Davelray is right on this! Windows 7 for now will be the new XP.

But Linux is coming slow but sure. One day ...............

I went into the local Microsoft store last week the day they started taking orders for the Surface RT for delivery on the 26th which is the first day it will be physically available. I was there just a few hours after the store opened and they were sold out. I was told I could still order one but that the delivery would be a few weeks later.
Someone is buying them.

avatar

Keith E. Whisman

Heck I want one. Not the phone, my Iphone kicks ass, but the tablet and desktop are pretty cool. Something different.

Keith E. Whisman

You guys can't handle change at all. Windows 8 is a major change, they are trying out something completely different but also keeping the desktop that we all grew up with. I'm actually excited to see what Windows 8 leads to in future versions of the OS. It's definitely aimed at providing the best possible entertainment and wow experience. I like the idea of a touch screen future that will one day lead to touch without actually touching anything ala Kinect. Even if Windows 8 is a total failure, I think Microsoft should pat themselves on the back for thinking outside the box and trying something original. Metro certainly was not stolen from Apple. I am going to through my full support behind Windows 8. All of the computers in my household are running Windows 8 Pro RTM and on Friday I'll actually be paying for licenses for all the computers.
Windows 8 is much better than staying stagnant with the same old song and dance. I applaud Microsoft and look forward to a future that I couldn't possibly imagine. I never imagined anyone producing something like Windows 8 and I just love the innovation involved. I hope Microsoft and Linux and Apple will continue to innovate and change things up and keep thinking outside the box. At least try it and give it a chance.

avatar

DoctorX

been running it since cp... metro sucks... they should have left the interface alone and put in the other improvements. I love change... in fact I am running Xubuntu on my laptop. I love the interface better. I also use Kubuntu and i love it. Again a different interface. I also use Android. Again a different interface. Metro is stupid and fugly.

So go shove the cant handle change BS and shove it up your ass. Get off your high horse and drinking the coolaid. There would have been a few tweaks that would make all the difference in the world, but MS refused. We will have the final laugh when the os flops.

avatar

Meat_Juice

Tried it several times and it sucks donkey balls on a PC. It's also ugly.

avatar

RUSENSITIVESWEETNESS

Blow it out your M$.

And it's throw, not through. Genius.

avatar

Keith E. Whisman

You must work for Apple with your hatred of all things Microsoft. And the fact you can spell Genius.

They locked his other account. LOL. And you would think he learned his lesson.

avatar

Not only did they lock it, they deleted all his posts along with other people's replies to his posts....

lol

EDIT:

LOL!!!! Love the Last EVER edit comment... Someone with his sick need for attention isn't going away. He'll be back on here.

avatar

Happy

Of COURSE he's going to talk up Surface and Windows 8. His wealth is dependent on the stock price of his Microsoft shares. If Windows 8 is an abysmal failure and Microsoft's stock price plummets then a good chunk of Gates' fortune just went "poof" and disappeared into thin air. He can't do much philanthropy if he has no money to fund it with because his shares of Microsoft aren't worth anything any more so of COURSE he's going to say Windows 8 is the greatest thing since sliced bread and of COURSE he's going to tout the Surface as a revolutionary device.

Bill Gates is definitely brilliant if not an out and out genius and so if he were involved in Microsoft still and were the CEO and were in charge of all this stuff then I'd say it would probably be great but because he is hardly involved in Microsoft anymore I have to say that the chances of Windows 8 and Surface being a resounding success are much much slimmer.

Sorry bill windows is on it way out every day more and more people are finding out unix works and it works better then windows and is getting better every day i love my mac and i love my linux os computer
And linux os phone and looking to buy a tablet with linux becuse it works

avatar

Andacious

lol! I admire your passion for Linux and Unix...but lets be real here.

Linux needs to be usable by the general public without requiring tons of configuring and dinking around with drivers to get it to work on many platforms. I agree that it is getting closer, but Linux is still very, very, very far from being a Windows alternative for the average user.

I do agree that Linux is getting big in terms of mobile (see: Android), which is awesome.

avatar

Baer

Linux is the OS of the future, and it always will be.

avatar

nightkiller

...It also reminds me of that joke about the woman who claimed that she was still a virgin after her divorce explaining that the only thing the bridegroom ever did was sit at the edge of the bed telling his bride about how great it was going to be.

avatar

nightkiller

That's what they were saying in 2002, as well. Better kernels, better user interfaces, better driver support. When will it come together in an intuitive package? Kaspersky has remarked that security wise, Linux and Windows 7 are equivalent. Someone has been driving towards a coherent environment and it's not Linux. It takes a company like Google to put together a viable platform in the form of Android because the prima donnas in the development community can't get a unified vision to move forward. Don't argue that Android is Linux. Someone had to bring order to the chaos. Linux did not and does not do that. For Linux, that's a badge of honor.

avatar

Hilarity

Bullshit. Linux is shit. I still have to edit fstab to get my SSD trim enabled even on 12.10. It STILL isn't automatic. Same with quite a bit of hardware. Linux is and will remain fragmented shit. Windows is solid and easy to load up and way more versatile. I gave Linux a chance, not anymore. Its a waste of time. Windows just works. And its just as reliable unless you fuck it up.

avatar

Keith E. Whisman

And why does Linux hate printers so much? Have you ever been able to print anything from within linux? Have you ever got a printer or even a scanner to work in linux? I like linux but I always end up sticking with Windows because I just get too much entertainment from Windows and Windows is just so much easier to use.

avatar

flyup

Try loading linux on a laptop- it'll take you a week to get the correct drivers. I'm not sure I'm sold on Win8 but after loading multiple linux distros on my laptop I've realized that linux is still the enthusiast OS- and mac is for people who don't game or build their own equipment.

avatar

Engelsstaub

I'm not sure about the drivers. I've installed Ubuntu on quite a few old craptops and it was a no-brainer. Thre rest of your comment is hard to take exception too though. I *usually* use a MacBook because I'm more of a laptop person.

I don't think Win8 is going to be as bad as some believe. I like that they killed Aero and it boots and runs fast. Hopefully they don't drag it back down through the Windows Update process

...but it's all opinion. There's no such thing as an "invalid opinion."

avatar

DoctorX

ok... you idiots that say shit like this just make me insane. Flyup, when did you try? 5 years ago? I just installed xubuntu 12.10 that just came out on a netbook from 2007 with no issues whatsoever... Everything works out of the box. I installed zero drivers. Hell even wireless works fine. I have it on a dell d620 and an e6400. On the dells, the only thing i updated was the nvidia driver... and there is a wizard that walks you through that! WTF people. STFU if you dont know WTF you are talking about. If you go back to 2006 then yes, it was little problematic... but then so was xp and vista.

Trim works without editing the SSD since kernel 2.6.32. Are you using the default ext4? I have had zero problems with trim on 10 different distros for the last 2 years...

avatar

flyup

I installed GNU BT5 on my HP dv6000 about 6 months ago- admittedly, the hardware is on par with the pieces of shit you loaded your linux distros on. The audio drivers were fucked and the video drivers didn't work out of the box. And here we come to the biggest concern with linux... there are too many garbage distros you have to wade through to get the installation you want. I understand that's what linux is for- you choose the packages that apply to your setup. I guess this is an old argument. One more thing- When I tried to install chrome on the root it wouldn't let me without a batch file hack- I know your not supposed to install anything as root- but I wanted to for security testing. And I guess we could go on and on...

avatar

Engelsstaub

Backtrack Linux is a very specialized distro for penetration testing, security, and the like. I don't think they approve or endorse the installation of other programs like Chrome. It's meant to work as is for special purposes. BT5 is not meant to be a primary desktop OS. Just putting that out there.

avatar

I Jedi

I'm going to have to agree with Hilarity on this one. Microsoft will continue to dominate the OS market for the foreseeable future. I don't see many businesses dropping Windows for Linux.

avatar

DoctorX

well i work for a global company and we have started to do that very thing. I run linux for my desktop for work. Both linux and OSX are being promoted and windows being demoted. Hell we have migrated to google apps and gmail. I dont even have ms office anymore and havent missed it.

avatar

Carlidan

No one is disputing that in business side linux is dominate. But what you're forgetting that's still a small percentage when you compare it to regular consumers. That's why Microsoft is and will be dominate in the foreseeable future. And why people are hating metro, I don't get. It's not like Microsoft is the only company doing it.

avatar

davelray

Linux is growing on the server side, but not so much on the desktop side. That might be slowly changing, but Linux is nowhere near dominating the business desktop. Corporate use of Microsft products makes up for the largest percentage of Microsoft's money. The consumer market is a fraction of Microsoft's business.

He looks like a hostage in a video produced by his captors.

LOL...well what would you expect him to say? It's a piece of crap?

You can put this in the "no news" category.

Ya, if he didn't want the surface to happen, it would never hit the shelves

This just in: The Sun rose this morning from a roughly eastern position. Experts predict it will set sometime this evening, most likely in a generally western direction.
