Bill Gates Does the Robot in Latest Vista Ad
If you enjoyed the first commercial starring Bill Gates and new OS pitchman Jerry Seinfeld (and judging by the comments in the accompanying news post, many of you did), then you're likely to be tickled by the latest installment, all agonizing 4 minutes of it (that's right, my PC brethren, I'm still not amused). Gates doesn't shake his tush in the latest Vista ad, but he does do the robot, or at least a 52-year-old semi-retired billionaire's version of the robot (admittedly not bad, all things considered).
The newest ad still stays mainly focused on trying to connect with current culture rather than outright attempting to whip Apple at its own game, which is to fight a battle of the OSes. But here's my beef - it's just not amusing, to me anyway. There are subtle (and some not so subtle) messages to be picked up on in both commercials, but just as I didn't find myself chuckling at the whole Shoe Circus setting, I'm equally unimpressed watching a couple of rich guys trying to coexist with the common folk (props to the spunky grandma, the sole shining star so far in this ad campaign). Taken to the extreme, as Gizmodo alludes to, the commercials' failure to live up to expectations ironically mimic the same characteristic that described Vista when it first debuted.
There's a particular line that stands out in this new commercial. After Gates and Seinfeld are caught stealing a leather giraffe, the man of the home tells the unlikely duo "I'm disappointed in the both of you." Me too.
Am I just being a hater, or are you guys and gals still digging these introductory commercials? Maybe I'm just bitter that Will Ferrell didn't end up with the role.

I didn't have a chance to watch the old commercial before, but I just watched both of them and didn't find either one funny. Seinfeld is a jackass failure of a comedian, and Bill Gates is embarrasing himself by doing this shit with him.
I'd have rather watched 4 minutes of people taking turns shitting on a Macbook in front of a white background.

I like Bill Gates, he seems a hundred times "friendlier" than some other guy I watch delivering keynotes. I also like watching the new vista ads, well, more of the second one. I have been using windows since 3.1 and I continue to work on a windows xp environment but I think I will skip vista. The company I'm working for was among the early adapters of vista and allocated 8 desktops for initial tests and all had problems we could not diagnose and fix. Sure there is now the SP1 and better drivers but we simply cannot justify the cost of upgrading existing hardware when the xp systems we have works extremely well. Sure vista is more secure but xp is secure just as well, and if there are vulnerable areas in xp, there are safety measures in place to augment security.
If the ads are geared towards improving micorsoft's customer relations, then I have to say that it is working for a lot of my co-workers and myself. But if it aims to sell vista, I don't think it would do much in the retail market. Perhaps vista will dominate the oem machines because it's pre-installed by manufacturers but for the business and corporate environment, vista is not a neccesary upgrade.
Sorry Bill, I like you but I'll skip vista and wait and see what windows 7 is all about.

I like Bill & Jerry, although I wish Gates had done some [err, quite a few...] things differently...
The Mac commercials aren't funny, unless you mean I can't believe people will buy this B.S. line, funny.
I do like the pizza-box one, though. ----what can I say? Stupid visual gags just work for me. (I also like the pic on the Shoe Circus membership card, but that's like, 2 seconds...)
I haven't seen the new commercial, yet. I assumed the first one was about "the Matadors"... Do you mean to say you saw anything to do with any type of computer in it? (Bill doesn't quite count. He's retired & touring w/Warren Buffet.)

If Bill Gates wants to get in touch with his customer base he should spend some time with the people that use his product. I welcome Bill to stop by and spend a few hours with me. I could tell him horror stories I have had over the years using windows. Maybe Bill could help me trouble shoot my current system. I never wanted to be a computer geek. I had no choice but to learn to be one. I have always wanted to have a system that just worked. No blue screens, no going to forums to find answers, just a system that works. I do feel a bit of joy when I repair this rig. I even enjoy using windows vista 64 bit. SO how about it Mr. Gates, take me up on the challenge. Stop on by, spend some time with a customer. Then stay for a barbque with the family.

I think the Mac commercials are a little bit funny, especially the old one with the "PCs" sitting on the work bench. The one i thought was clever though was when PC had his PR person there taling about Vista and people downgrading to XP

This ad is definately an improvement over the last one, but does this actually air on TV, because 4 and a half minutes is about a whole entire commercial break!!! I did get a few laughs out of this one though.

Yep for me the first commercial seems like it has no point to it- but maybe that is the whole point to the commercial???
It does come across as two famous people just doing scenes with no forethought to it at all. But I must admit I do enjoy watching it.
I hope all of a sudden we don't see Steve Jobs appearing in commercials as well for Apple. LOL.
I could picture it now --- scene1 Steve having a Latte with (insert famous snobby person here). lol. j/k.By the way Paul, I really enjoy your articles! Keep up the good work :)

Um Paul it seams to me that the commercial is'nt really the problem with you it's the fact that the participants are rich. It would seam that you dislike them simply because they are rich. That is a bias and not really a good one. Remember that these are people like you and I. They put their pants on just like I do head first. I've met and known a few rich people and they were very friendly and kind people.
Bill Gates was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He worked hard to get to where he is. In fact he donated a full half of his fortune when most churches only require 10%. My dad actually met Bill Gates and found him to be a very humble and friendly man. My dad is an excellent judge of character.
I'm poor and I live in a small 1 bedroom apartment but I don't blame the rich for my situation and neither should anyone else. Rather try in your life to attain wealth like they did. Some of us get rich and most of us keep trying. But don't hate on them simply because they were successfull in life. Put yourself in their shoes.
If I'm wrong about your sentiments then forgive me. Hopefully anyone that reads this post will learn from it.

My problem with Vista's new ad campaign has zero to do with Bill Gate's or Jerry Seinfeld's wealth, and with regards to the former, I'm actually an admirer of Gates - forget about computing, what the man has done and continues to do for the world often gets overlooked among the anti-Microsoft sentiment that exists.
No, my problem has everything to do with humor, or more specifically, the lack of it. Like most people, I've grown tired of Justin Long, and if you ever catch me owning a Mac, go ahead and revoke my Lifetime Geek membership card (which is infinitely cooler than Gate's Shoe Circus card). But you know what? Those Mac ads, as inaccurate as many of them are, elicit chuckles from both sides of the fence, or at least they used to before 2-3 commercials turned into 300 bombardments of the same/similar message (we get it Apple, you're soooo hip and clever ). I can't say the same thing about Gates/Seinfeld, no matter how desperately I want to like the new ad campaign (and I desperately do). Chewy computers? Scalloped potatoes? That just doesn't strike my funny bone.

Seedless watermelons are tasty too but lack the cannon capability...
P.S. The commercials are like Vista... I don't get it...

Sometimes I like to hollow them out and live inside them. They're weather proof, and also quite bouyant. I've crossed 3 of the Great Lakes in a hollowed out watermelon, surviving only on the delicious meat of this versatile fruit. There were a few times that I encountered fruit-pirates, in the quick banana-boats, but they were unable to withstand the firepower of my watermelon seed launchers.
