Ballmer Mocks Rivals as Windows 7 Sales Exceed 400 Million
Microsoft’s annual Worldwide Partner Conference got underway in Los Angeles earlier today with a keynote by Steve Ballmer, who took the opportunity to thank the software leviathan’s partners for making Windows 7 the fastest-selling operating system in history and to apprise them of the record-shattering OS’s latest feat. According to Ballmer, the company has now sold more than 400 million Windows 7 licenses.
Windows 7 has reached this milestone well within two years of its October 2009 launch. Despite the sustained sales momentum, the latest version of Windows could not prevent Apple Mac shipments from growing at a much faster rate than the PC market during this period.
But Ballmer is satisfied with the fact that Windows-based PCs still account for most of the PC market. Comparing the sale of Windows-based machines with that of non-Windows PCs over the past twelve months, Ballmer said: "350 million, 350 million new PCs sold. That might compare with numbers from other guys that are in the 20 million range... now, 20 is too much, but 350 the last time I checked is a lot more than 20."
The company revealed that Windows XP can still be found on 200 million PCs. Both Ballmer and Tami Reller, corporate vice president and chief financial officer of Windows and Windows Live, called on partners to persuade Windows XP holdouts to finally move to Windows 7. An upgrade now, Reller feels, will "set them up for the future [read Windows 8]."
Even as the company no longer wants Windows 7 to co-exist with its 10-year-old granddad, it sees “a future with a heterogeneous enterprise environment of Windows 8 devices and apps alongside Windows 7 PCs and apps."

Well, XP was getting really old, people really disliked Vista, and Windows 7 was a pretty good OS. Yeah, that's why it's doing well. You think Windows 8 is going to do those numbers? Gift baskets

Oh I know. Shady and dirt business partly. Not to mention they can play with computer distributors to force them to not also sell computers with alternate OSes preinstalled.
REcently, Microsoft demanded Samsung pay $5 for every Android smartphone sold for violation of patents. But wait. What about WP7 smartphones? I'm sure those violated patents too. Yet another way for Microsoft to play dirty.

Like when Microsoft was spouting off to the public about how Linux infringed upon its patents. The Linux community demanded to know which patents and MS had no further comment.
They have nearly all of the "marketshare," yet they feel threatened by everyone. When Apple claims patent infringement it's big news around here. At least they try to back it up in courts. Microsoft, under Balmer, just talks a bunch of endless BS now.

Wow. Ballmer is good with numbers.
"Sold" = preloaded on almost every new cheap laptop. MS's marketshare has been plummeting whilst their competitor's increased big time. ...talking shit... Windows 8 is going to be a huge Google/Apple try-hard. This is why he has those huge sweat-stains all over his shirt. What a class-act. Bring back Bill Gates, please. He was no follower.

Ya, because you know Steve Jobs is such a sane person. Try reading about Apple's history, even the movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley" gives you a good idea of how messed up Steve "The Boy Wonder" Jobs is.
Gates felt it was time to retire. His empire is in good hands. Steve needs to do the same thing, and leave Apple to those that can properly run the company.
And ya, where are your references, site your sources, etc. You're just a ranting troll that has NO idea what its talking about!

"Did you know I'm from Canada, hey? Look at me...Canada. Did I tell you I'm from Canada?!"
My sources are the stock market. Read it yourself...I'm not here to report. I'm commenting like everyone else. If you have to be that douche that throws the word troll around the internet at everyone who doesn't think exactly as you do then you're a "ranting troll" too. The only difference between you and me is you don't have the stones to go into a forum and speak another point of view then the one you know everyone will slap you on your back for. This wasn't any more about Apple than it was about Google or any other MS competitor that it seeks to now follow under Ballmer.
Ballmer is dragging Microsoft down. That's my opinion. I'll just be a troll for having an opinion, you hard-on.

Intersting. I wasn't aware that stock price indicated market share. So, that means that for every share that goes up or down, that is someone jumping ship and not investors buying or selling more stock? That must mean, that at home, with having 6 computers running Windows, I must have 6 stock options in Microsoft. BONUS! And when I sold my iPod Nano 5yrs ago, I sold my Apple stock too? I wasn't aware I had stock in Apple. So, when both Apple and Microsoft stock price goes down, that's someone leaving for Linux right?
You said that MS needs to bring back Gates, indicating that you think that Bill Gates will do a better job of running Microsoft. In relation to that, I said that Apple needs to get rid of Steve Jobs. See the connection?
Any computer with a pre-loaded OS (Windows or MacOS), the cost for that license is built in to the cost of the computer. So yes, preloaded OS = Sold licenses. With enough work, you can actually give up your Windows license, and get money back from the PC manufacturer if you choose to not go with Windows. It takes some work, but it is possible.
I think you need to calm down a little. How's your blood pressure doing? I can only predict that its in the very high level, considering how you've handled replying to people.
And finally, what is with the "Canada" comment?

"MS's marketshare has been plummeting whilst their competitor's increased big time."
WTF are you talking about? Windows STILL owns 90%+ of the PC market. Granted OSX has taken back about 2-3% but the term "plummeted" should never be used to describe that drop.
"Windows 8 is going to be a huge Google/Apple try-hard."
What's it like on your planet? Do they just make blind statements without even doing the research? I'd like to visit sometime.
"This is why he has those huge sweat-stains all over his shirt."
He's big and sweatty. What do you want from the guy? He can't change his genetic make up.
"He was no follower."
And you're apparently a stranger to facts.

You made one point here, the rest was just bull about what planet I am from with no actual counter-point or substance. I'll only address that which you have in any intelligible manner:
PC sales are in a slump. (Witness how MS has to give away XBox consoles to promote them now and Apple can just get away with a stupid 100 dollar credit for the iTunes/Appstore.)
Apple's and Google's stock have been surging up. NYSE. In this case it's not about who's OS is prebloated on most people's hardware.

The sweat-stained Ballmer in the picture is from the archives. Ballmer gets pretty adamant on stage and he's a big sweaty guy.
Google/Apple try-hard? What the hell does that even mean? Microsoft is far from perfect, but Windows 7 brought a slew of welcome changes to Windows -- many that innovated beyond anything Apple has done with their bastardized BSD OS. So instead of being blatantly biased, maybe you should give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt with Windows 8 and reserve judgement until you've actually seen it in action or played with it yourself. Or you can just keep being ignorant -- spewing nonsense on the internet. I don't care.
Also, "competitor's market share increased big time"? Citation please? Last I checked, Mac market share has only increased marginally. Apple's success lies in their iPod, iPad and iPhone products. Macs remain only a small portion of their business.

Why is this always about Apple with everyone here? I did mention other competitors, didn't I? Understandably, Ihave to keep saying this over and over (since responses come from diff't people who assume I'm a Mac-only type) my primary computer is an Alienware running Win 7. I like Windows 7 and have seen what they are trying to do with 8; completely copy Google and Apple.
I feel that Microsoft isn't interested in setting trends or innovating anymore. They couldn't even promote their (well-designed) Zune, which I also own, properly.
As to the rest, read above. I wasn't the only one who said this. Why is there a bunch of comments asking the exact same thing? Do you guys read the responses below the comments that so infuriate you before typing off the same rebuttals??

Question, how do you improperly own a piece of hardware such as an MP3 player?
If you sole it, is it improperly owned?

Answer: note the placement of the commas in that sentence. Ask your English teacher. Please tell me that French is your first language. If you would mistake "sole" for sold, and English was your only language, I would hate to think I've wasted my time today engaging you in any sort of discussion.

Well said. I want to mentiom on another note as well.
Microsoft lets you choose what hardware you want to purchase, or venders you want to support. Apple locks you in a standardized hardware set. I also believe Apple will soon phase out OSX put iOS on all of their machines.
Another point is soon Jobs will be gone again and there comes the question of who's next? Last time jobs left, the company almost went out of business. Say what you will about jobs, but he is a pitchman.
