AVADirect Offering Laptops with Core i7 CPU, 3 Hard Drives
Posted 06/02/09 at 12:44:40 PM by Paul Lilly
And so it begins. AVADirect announced the upcoming availability of its Clevo D900F laptop, and what makes this special is it's the first one to incorporate Intel's Core i7 processor, the company claims.
"By using a desktop Core i7 processor, the notebook is able to enjoy all the benefits that accompany this hardware platform," AVADirect said in a statement. "Some of the benefits include triple-channel memory, a first ever in a notebook design."
Everything about the Clevo D900F screams desktop replacement, and does so in a big way. The tri-channel memory (up to 12GB of it) comes clocked at 1333MHz "with 1600MHz on the horizon." And if a Core i7 wasn't enough, AVADirect also crams Nvidia's GTX 280M graphics into the mix.
So what does Intel think about a Core i7-based notebook?
"While Intel does not encourage manufacturers to use desktop processors for notebook designs, manufacturers are going to use our processor in many different and innovative ways," an Intel spokesperson said.
You an pre-order the Clevo D900F now starting at $2,500. Shipping will begin next month.

I went on AVA to configure a balls out super laptop. Price as configured $10619.92
That is with: I7-975, 12GB ddr3, 3-SUPERTALENT 512GB SSD RUNNING RAID 5, and all the other best goodies.
I think it would be super fun to go to a LAN party with this beast in tow.

This concept of desktop
Submitted by Bless on Wed, 06/03/2009 - 12:46am
This concept of desktop replacement still bewildered me, isnt it more satisfying to use a desktop given the same power n everything? I mean bigger screen and being able to swap the hardware, so I heard? and not to mention the issue of battery life, what good is a laptop if you cant be mobile with it? isnt it desktop is a much better choice?
It depends...

It depends, normally you would be right :) but there are some exceptions, for example, im going to college soon and plan on getting 2 laptops, one for class, and one as a desktop replacement so I can still visit people on the weekends without having to deal with leavin a nice computer at a dorm or worry someone will break into my apartment (depending on which I do) :)

Support for 3 hard drives (without removing an optical) isn't exactly common either.
but you can get...
Submitted by Devo85x on Tue, 06/02/2009 - 5:51pm
but from other places you can get: a core 2 quad, 2 280M's, 2 hard drives, and 8GB of ram... not quite as good for CPU intensive tasks, but since its cheaper than this (if you actually get a good one) i would take the other one any day
Lower price for this beast!

There is a difference between anounced and released for sale. As for the memory, trichannel is NOT DDR3... (well it is, but it isnt the same thing)

can't you also have trichannel with DDR2 or DDR1? i know there are no consumer board supporting it, but all those server board with gotta have more than 2 channels.

Hello everyone,
Let me clarify some things here about this notebook. This is a total desktop replacement for high-end gaming and workstation systems. It is for users who need a portable yet powerful system. While somewhat loosely aimed at gaming, it is more for CAD, Engineering, and Physics calculations more than anything.
Battery life is around 1 - 1.5 hours, depending upon usage and screen brightness.

Ya but think how awesome that would be to bring to a lan party :) Thats really the purpose, it sits on your desk with a 24 inch monitor plugged in until you wanna move it, then its bloody easy!

How can you call is a deskktop replacement when you will spend most of the time tied to a wall outlet?? Really defeats the purpose of owning this "laptop".
That's what the definition
Submitted by skhills on Tue, 06/02/2009 - 1:59pm
That's what the definition of desktop replacement is. It's a laptop that sits on your desk where your desktop used to be and is plugged in almost all the time. And on the occassions that you need it to be portable, it's a whole lot easier to move than the desktop it replaces. It's obviously not for the coffee shop hopping crowd.
I'd rather lug this thing
Submitted by Denis63 on Wed, 06/03/2009 - 12:30pm
I'd rather lug this thing around than my 70lb tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse. i go to lan parties about once a month and its a PAIN IN THE ASS to bring my desktop. and i can easily bring it almost anywhere. Desktop Replacement laptops are a great idea, but im going to keep my tower and my AspireOne. :) -Denis
