Australia's Blacklisted Hyperlinks to Cost Webmasters $11,000 a Day

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

According to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), this and other blacklisted hyperlinks will cost webmasters $11,000 a day if published on a website. The hefty fine applies to any site containing a banned URL, which was demonstrated last week when the AMA threatened the host of an online broadband disccusion forum after a user posted a link to a banned anti-abortion website.

According to The Syndney Morning Herald, the ACMA's blacklist doesn't significantly impact web browsing by Australians, but that could change if the Federal Government implements its mandatory internet filtering censorship plan.

The newest site added to the ACMA's blacklist includes Wikileaks, who drew the ACMA's ire after it published a leaked document containing Denmark's lists of banned websites. Wikileaks had also posted Thailand's censorship, noting that both lists have expanded from child porn to other material including political discussions.

"We note that, not only do these incidents show that the ACMA censors are more than willing to interpret their broad guidelines to include a discussion forum and document repository, it is demonstrably inevitable that the Government's own list is bound to be exposed itself at some point in the future," Electronic Frontiers Australia said. "The Government would serve the country well by sparing themselves, and us, this embarrassment."

The Australian Government's internet censorship trials are due to begin shortly, however none of the major ISPs have been invited to participate. O_o

avatarI reccomend that everyone in

I reccomend that everyone in this country that can legally do so buy at least one hand gun and one rifle and get as much ammunition as possible. Because life will change if our government ever bans guns. We must fight any gun bans to the very end. Because that is the beginning of total governmental control. That's how the Nazis took complete control. They took power and then banned guns and then went after the jews in that order. Then it was censorship at about the same time.

And this is how it seems to always happen.

avatarGod Damn Australia are you

God Damn Australia are you turning into Communist China or Nazi Germany? And why is it wrong to be against Abortion -murder-. The government is barring it's citizens from talking about politics? About Religeon? What kind of sick sons of bitches are running Australia. No wonder they banned guns in Australia. There are alot of reasons for it's people to rise up against their over baring government. We went to war with England for our independance for much less.

Hell if any president of the USA were to even talk about doing things like this here in the USA it would mean civil war. Hell it would mean revolution. States would secede from the union.

If I were an Australian I would do what I could to change my government. I can't believe people aren't doing what they can to restore their rights. You simply cannot allow your government to take away any liberty. It always starts out with slight liberties.. Life will go on. You won't even miss this one. And then it gets to where the Government decides on what you need and don't need. It really gets sick. This all started when Australia banned guns.

Beware of our government here. When the US government talks about socialized medicine it now scares me. England recently decided that it couldn't afford a cancer drug so it was dropped. Not thousands of royal subjects are going to die a painful death because of their government. Here in the USA you would be able to get that medication. There are organisations that would make sure you get your medication even if you can't afford it.

People don't let your government decide what you say and do and weather you live or die. If the government decides to pipe free internet to everyone in the country then they can completely control what you do with it. Like in Australia.

The president wants more government control over the banks. Perhaps it's a good thing right now or perhaps it's a bad thing because then the government can decide you make too much money or you don't pay enough taxes or you have too much money. You see Government control sucks 100% of the time. It seems like a good idea and even I recently believed social medicine was a great Idea until Great Britain screwed that up for me. I voted for Obama because I wanted some socailism here now I'm regretting it when I think about the costs of liberty.

avatarTwo answers come to mind.

Two answers come to mind.  One, less scary, is that they also add external sites that have the banned link posted to the ban list.  Two, far more scary and likely, is the idea of using their relationship with the hosting country's goverment to pass their fines over the pond.  So, if you have the link posted on your server here in teh US, and Austrailia's goverment asks our goverment to fine you for them, like an extradition.  You think our goverment here in the US would hang you out to dry to keep cozy with an allied country?  I sure do.

avatarHere's an interesting part

Here's an interesting part of your link to Wikileaks:

"Two days ago Wikileaks released the secret Internet censorship list for Thailand. Of the 1,203 sites censored this year, all have the internally noted reason of "lese majeste" -- criticizing the Royal family. Like Denmark, the Thai censorship system was originally promoted as a mechanism to prevent the flow of child pornography."

Citing child pornography is the excuse many censorship laws have started out with... after all, what sane human or  non-suicidal politician could object to such a thing? You may recall that this was the "reason" all the major ISPs dropped alt.binary usenet groups here in the USA, so don't think the camel's nose isn't snuffling inside our own tent. Child pornography is deviant and vile, so it makes an excellent Trojan Horse to usher in Draconian restrictions on everything else.

Here's more of my favorite Trojan Memes:

"If you're not doing anything wrong or illegal, you shouldn't mind:" (wiretaps, surveillance, giving up Constitutional rights, censorship, etc.)

"If only one life is saved, you wont mind:" (You know the rest, mmm hmmm)

"It will benefit our school system" (Florida's Lottery started out with this "promise")

"It's for the children"

"The trains will run on time"

There are plenty more... don't be afraid to look at issues objectively, no matter how direly framed with moral horrors and misdirection.

avatarIt's not about bible

It's not about bible thumping it's just knowing right from wrong. I curse like a sailor and I don't talk to god like I should. But I am a patriot. I obey the laws. I pay my taxes. But what is more important is Liberty and knowing what is right. We must up hold the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We must defend life. Abortion cheapens life. I had unprotected sex now we can just have an abortion. That's wrong. That is murder. You made human life you have to live with it.

There is no other creature on this planet that kills it's unborn young.

Right and Wrong.

avatar1984 in 2009... just a few years late

Congratulations, Australia, you have just made George Orwell perform a roll maneuver in his grave. Kind of ironic that a British author could fortell Australia's future so well, really.

Soon, "G'day Mate!" may be synonymous with "I owe my gov't $11K but dunno why". For a country that has essentially legalized prostitution, this is an uptight law, indeed.

Australia's lawmakers should be pink with embarrassment over passing something like this, but my feeling is they are probably just patting eachother on the back for a 'job well done'.  So sad.  Good luck Australia, you are going to need it!

P.S. This just proves that New Zealand really is cooler than Australia (at least where the government is concerned)!!!  Haha!

avatarPathetic

This is pathetic and scary all rolled into one.

Censorship of ANYTHING is just the beginning of a

downward spiral into governments absolute control of so many

things we hold dear.

avatarCanada is Already Getting There Fast

I find ironic that the same countries that trash China for censorship and the "Great Firewall" are slowly moving in that EXACTLY direction.

Here is the crap under Caanda's shoe that's causing a smell:

http://www.canadianhumanrightscommission.com (The Canadian Human Rights Commission) - No fair trial, no transparency, no rules of procedure or proper evidence, no right to a lawyer and 100% conviction rate.)

http://www.richardwarman.com (Richard Warman King of Canadian Censors who has only two friends left in the world. His left had and right hand)

It's always easy for governments to say they are doing things to stop "terrorists", "child porn" and "hate". But banning wikileaks is an obvious move to censor dissent.
