Australia Crows about Smartphone Security, iPhone in Particular
An Australian official is warning anyone who will listen that popular smartphones, especially Apple's iPhone, present "boundless opportunities" for cybercrooks. Why the iPhone in particular? Put simply, it's the "third most used system in the world" for businesses and "deployed or piloted by more than 70 percent of Fortune 100 companies," explains John Lawler, head of the Australian Crime Commission.
According to Lawler, IT managers are at odds with the iPhone's popularity "because they can't centralize installation and security updates as with other software."
"This overwhelming desire for instant services (comes) at the expense of security safeguards," Lawlyer said during a criminology conference this week.
Australia isn't the only country nervous about smartphone security. The German government recently banned minsters and senior civil servants from using iPhones and BlackBerrys to protect against cyber attacks.
