You can win some sweet prizes from Asus, but first you'll need to know how to pronounce the company's name.
Nobody likes having their name mispronounced, but if the way you spell your name is a bit ambiguous, would you be willing to fork over $10,000 to get people to pronounce it correctly? That's what Asus is doing. The PC parts maker is asking fans to upload creative videos with the topic "Say Asus" that teach people the correct pronunciation, and it's giving away $10,000 in prizes to the best ones. Asus posted a couple of its own videos, including a rather funny one with Bruce Lee.
So everyone's clear, Asus is pronounced "ey soos." Some common mispronunciations include "ah soos," "ah sis," and "ey sis." Have a look at how Bruce Lee does it (nunchucks are optional):
In case there's still any doubt, here's another:
Everyone savvy? Good, now go upload your own and win some groovy gear! The contest is vaild until February 6, 2013, and there are some terms and conditions you'll need be aware of, all of which can be found on Asus' Facebook contest page.
let that be a lesson to everyone trying to pick a name for a company. If the village idiot can't pronounce it correctly, then pick another name. I don't hear anybody mispronouncing Apple, microsoft, honda, toyota, Dell, etc.
For the record, I own way too much stuff made by Aysoos.
I guess I should learn how to pronounce it correctly since I own four of their motherboards and one of their monitors. Not to mention I'm saving my nickels for a Transformer TF300 10.1" tablet.
Indeed, I will never say it how they want it to be said -NOW- because I fondly remember when it was "ACE-us" or "A-sus" if you prefer...
It reminds me of a silly ad campaign a while back where some idiots (presumably with the forestry service in some way) were trying to reinvent "Smokey The Bear" as "Smokey Bear", and their angle was that ONLY "Smokey Bear" was to be an acceptable name for him... Even producing insulting commercials suggesting anyone calling him by his original name was basically stupid.
To which I and many many others pointed out dozens of books, toys, even sing-a-long records and so forth products from the earliest days of Smokey THE Bear, that clearly called him as such... Needless to say that dumb ad campaign went quietly into the night when people of my generation smiled politely at their demands, and merely replied "NO".
