Asus Aims to Gun Down Apple's iPad with Powerful Tablet
If you follow trends at all, then it's not too hard to figure out what the current one is. In recent times, first it was netbooks that stole the show, followed by e-book readers, and now tablet PCs are all the talk. Enter Asus, who along with MSI (see here), has no intention of letting Apple corner the market.
Like MSI's unit, Asus' Eee Tablet (or whatever it will be called) will tap into Tegra, and specifically Tegra 2. But it will also sport a dual-core ARM Cortex 9 based processor with support for multitasking. In other words, you can expect a fairly powerful tablet capable of full 1080p HD playback, which makes the HDMI connector a most welcome addition.
What we don't know is how much it will cost, and probably won't have those details until CeBit, which kicks off in early March.

I think this will be an better overall product. I want to read car and gaming mags on this puppy as well as an occasinal movie. And it will have "FLASH"! Apple read that part out loud.

So, these are the Windows OS's I can think of that I believe can run on ARM CPU's:
OLD NT kernels, windows CE, windows mobile?, anything else?
Does win xp embedded run on arm?I'm asking cause the picture distinctly shows winxp on the thing.
So either it's photoshopped, or...winxp embedded runs on arm...All the press releases for tegra 2 indicate nvidia is targeting Adroid based tablets and phones for the platform, and choosing ARM processors definately supports that assumption, since windows OSes don't really do well in that market.
I want one, but I like linux. Most people dont.
I find it funny that people are asking if windows 7 will run on it well. (try not at all unless they hack the kernel to work on ARM...)Anyway, I'd much rather have this than the ipad for quite a few reasons:
It will likely be cheaper/performance, which is always good.
On a tegra2 platform running linux it would be possible to have flash and Java support, the ipad doesn't.
Hdmi out is a nice touch...
And lastly, I won't have to worry about apple's custom crazy CPU not being supported on any OS but their likely abandoned, non-upgradable OS in 2 years. (meaning I don't want to be stuck running a ipad/iphone only nitch OS that I may not be able to update in a couple years...that proposition scares the living hell out of me.)

you know since windows 8 supports 128-bit and with the ground ARM is gaining i'd bet Win 8 would run on ARM....

That's possible that win8 could support arm...but what about until then? Arm/nvidia/tegra2 isn't gonna wait for windows to catch up.
Aslo, I don't know if it's true at all, but I heard the 128 bit rumor about windows 8 was really just a driver for a 128bit FPU for a specific chip or something...not that the OS natively supports 128 bit computing. I don't know if that's fact or anything...but it makes more sense to me.

All I am looking for is a tablet that has a screen the size of a piece of paper that can show magazines and textbooks in full size and full color that I can read in a chair somewhere. Not 9.7 inches, not black a white, not DRMed to death, just PDF and ePub is good enough for me. Under a grand.
Is this too much to ask?

HP touchsmart series. 12.1" screen (1280x800), not quite paper size (8.5x11 paper is 14"), but close enough for me (I can read the maximum pc coverleaf edition or the PDFs fine). mine (a tx2514) cost me about $1000 in 2008.
The new tm2t systems will squeeze under your $1k limbo stick in a stripped down config.

Tegra 2 already has 2 cortex A9s in it. And i'm pretty sure this thing wont have an extra 2 stuffed in it.

this is what i was ranting about when netbooks started out. netbooks are just too little and underpowered and just not very usable for much more than browsing the web. now tablets with the guts of a netbook with a multitouch display now that is worth something. on screen keyboard leaves room for an optical drive and large hard ddrive or even a couple large ssd's. finally apple has something i want just missing some storage and optical drive.

Assuming that this thing is even powerfull enough to run Windows 7 (dont even think about Vista's fat a$$). XP might not be a bad choice, cuz its still better than what the i(Maxi)Pad can do because it would be a full OS not just a little application platform.

My ideal portable would be an ASUS UL30Vt-A1 (which is an amazing laptop on its own) with perhaps more speed but at least the same battery life (I can dream right) in a convertible form with a multi-touch wacom(multi-touch capacative with traditional wacom for more detail oriented work like drawing). Do it ASUS, and you will rule the world.
Running a full fledged OS, this could have all the usability of the Apple slate in software. I still think Apple shoudl sell their software. Imagine how well an iPhone/iPad/iPod touch emulation software would do. You could let other companies build the hardware, and still have you locked down app store if people WANTED to use it. I have been saying for years that Apple should sell OS X also, but alas, nothing.

Just read that somewhere. apple puts up with the apps store and I Tunes just to sell hardware. By themselves, Apple is breaking even or maybe a little into the red.

Didn't they just hit a historic high for revenue? Does it not suggest that they are likely to believe they have a pretty good revenue model as it stands?

Ha, The best "Invention eva?" Have you been alive for 3 days? the iPad is not even an invention. Its just Apples crappy over-priced and underpowered take on a tablet computer. But because of how naive and blind Apple fanboys are they dont care. Even if it cost 1500 dollars and wasnt ready for a public release yet people would still take out a second mortgage on thier house to have it first, just to find out a month later that a better cheaper one is going to be realeased.
And thats why microsoft will always be superior.
