ARM Aims to Wrestle 40 Percent Share of Global Notebook Market by 2015
ARM has been flexing its muscle in the handheld mobile space seemingly since time began. The company owns the tablet market in the
same manner that Intel dominates netbooks, and ARM is a major player in the smartphone space, too. Next up on ARM's agenda is to attack the notebook market with the same fervor and own 40 percent of the market by the time 2015 rolls around.
ARM CEO Tudor Brown revealed his plans during an interview with news and rumor site DigiTimes. According to Brown, ARM is in great position to claim a large chunk of the notebook market by 2015, while still maintaining a leading position in the tablet PC market with an 85 percent share.
Brown insists ARM has learned from its previous mistakes when trying to break into the notebook market, like the poorly received Smartbook that didn't offer the same performance or compatibility as that of a traditional laptop. But with Microsoft on board to support ARM with Windows 8, and with notebooks shrinking in size and weight, ARM feels there's a tectonic shift (or techtonic, as the case may be) taking place, one that favors ARM's low power chips that, according to Brown, don't heat up as easily as Intel's processors.
