Are Price Drops Looming for Radeon HD 5870 Cards?
As of this writing, you'll still have a tough time finding a GF100 card in stock, and this will likely be the case until next week. In the meantime, ATI partners are still mulling whether or not to cut back pricing on HD 5870 and 5850 parts.
"We have learned that key people at AMD are still waiting to see how many Fermi cards will be available and they will only react if Nvidia manages to have really great sales with its GeForce 400 series," Fudzilla reports.
According to Fudzilla, there are a handful of ATI partners seriously considering lowering the prices of HD 5870 and 5850 parts, but such a move would not be supported by AMD. Instead, the price difference would come out of the AIB partners' profits.
What's interesting about all this is that AMD had originally wanted the HD 5870 to sell for around $380, but you'd be hard pressed to find one for under $400 street, with some SKUs approaching the $500 mark. If AMD were to cut pricing down to its original target, Fermi might have a tough time flying off store shelves.

Took me about 2 minutes to find a card for under 400.00 USD. Look under google products and theres a site selling it for 379.98 plus 7 dollars shipping.

I hope there's a price drop. And not one of the wimpy $30 drops; I'm praying for $100+

With the new 400 series price points, especially the price of the gtx470, they should be dropping the price on all cards. the gtx 285 is long overdue for a hefty price cut, and ATI would do well to try and drop down some as well.

I was looking at possibly getting a 5850 this week. I think I'll wait a week or two and see what happens. I might be able to get a 5870 in a few weeks for the price of a 5850 this week.

compared to an equivalent chip on a Nvidia card, ATI cards fold like crap.

That's only because F @ H code is optimized for Nvidia hardware; and considering that your folding proteins, Nvidia's Physics Engine might have to do with why they score higher as well...

hm, only did some folding with ATI never heard bout it before nvidia.
thats a shame, but i doubt it will hurt ATI's sales, no one buys a video card TO fold, if anything its just added.... thing, i stopped because it was acting werid and didnt care to leave my pc on all the time.

Check the Folding@Home forums on this website. They buy entire computers to fold.

I wish ATI cards could fold, there is a large community who only buys Nvidia because of folding.

This is why you get an ATI for graphics chores and pick up a cheap (or used) Nvidia for folding and PhysX.

This is a great time for ATI to make some money. ATI can make alot of money and pickup some more market share. This is great for us the consumer. Nvidia isn't going to want to be behind the curve for long. As long as ATI is ahead I think they should do everything they can to stay ahead.

I would love for them to lower the price...hopefully around 300 or below. Then I could crossfire my current 5870!!! W00t!
