Apple Will Offer Free Cases to Unhappy iPhone 4 Owners
Apple has been mostly silent on the issue of the reported iPhone 4 antenna issues, but in a press conference today, Jobs responded. Apple didn't really apologize for the whole problem, but they admitted it was happening. To appease customers that have had a hard time with reception, Apple will be sending out free cases to all interested parties. There will be a sign up page later next week.
It didn't take long after the smartphone came out for users to notice that covering the gap between the two antennas caused a precipitous drop in signal. It seems that after Consumer Reports decided against recommending the phone, Apple decided to take action. In addition to the free cases (which will be from a number of manufacturers, as Apple can't make Bumpers fast enough), those that bought Bumper can get a refund, and keep the Bumper.
It's nice that Apple is willing to do something. We were half expecting Steve Jobs to get up on stage and tell everyone to go pound sand. But it still seems crazy to us that Apple let the desire for great design get in the way of the functionality. The result is just that too many consumers will have to cover up the great design anyway. Let us know if you think Apple blew it, or saved themselves.

OK, so your the company that finally made computers cool and sleek.
And then you put yourself on your own golden altar, and tell the WORLD,
"We are making the worlds greatest invention ever... again!"
and get all the hype, all the cultivists walk around like they are chosen by Steve Jobs himself to own a piece of history and what happened?
"Woops! we messed up! Sorry! But were still the greatest people ever so, please dont forgive us cause were not sorry.."
Saving yourself is Vista and Win7.
"We made vista, and you dont want it... We dont want it either.. were pulling it off shelves everywhere and trashing it.
Sorry vista, gotta let you go, keep in touch with updates ok!
here is windows 7
We know Windows 7 is doing just fine."
See the difference in dialog?

I wonder how many of you NTACs actually own this phone?
Putting your dislike of "the man" aside, what was wrong with the final outcome on this deal? Simple choices really; take the free bumper, live with the design weakness or get a full refund. Sounds pretty thorough to me. If a company can provide a remedy, much less two, then consider yourself lucky. Smartphones drop calls all the time. Hell, regular phones drop calls. This is just another case of "Make News - (and you guys) Make Hey!", with a twist of "oh yeah, another opportunity to throw stones at Jobs, Apple, the Lisa and the Newton..." type nonsense.
As far as how Apple handled it, sure it could have gone better if you want to nitpick the ****ing deal, but at the end of the day, these phones will keep selling, vastly outpacing the competition and people will forget about this "blip" in the greater scheme of things, in relatively short order. People are funny like that. Everybody funny, you funny too! And I would be willing to bet that a large percentage of you NTACs will eventually go buy one if you already haven't done so. I'd love to see the statistics on that one. Percentage of Blog-Bombers that actually contradict their rantlife goings on, and who go and support or buy products from the company or entity they love to slam in public with full anonymity. Just sayin...
Don't like the bumper offer? then return your phone and wait for a rev two with the improved antenna design. I bet the car you drive has at least ONE design flub or performance issue that may have a bigger impact on your pathetic life. Do you complain about that to no end on the interwebs? Do you realize how much of your hard earned coin goes into transportation. Compare that to this seemingly insignificant phone debacle. Get real folks. Sh!t happens. It's not the end of the world.
Oh, and btw the way, I've never owned an iPhone and never plan on owning one.
[Nokia E71 owner. going on 3 years, and it ain't perfect either. It drops calls in areas I wouldn't expect it to just like every other cell phone I've ever purchased. Hmmm...could it be an inadequacy of the cell tower network, signal format or basic wireless network design criterion? /me scratches my chin. Oh wait, that's not a Jobs or Apple hater target. No fun in taking shots at that. ROFL]

In my opinion, Apple has really handled this poorly. I've gotten the feeling ever since this issue started to be talked about since the release date, that Apple PR and Steve Jobs just doesn't give a hoot about making their customers 100% satisfied in their products. This isn't a "non-issue" or an issue affecting certain iPhone 4s, but a major issue affecting every iPhone 4. The biggest question here is how in testing did the final release of a phone, of which millions of units would be sold, and would be in the biggest public spotlight for a phone, did a major issue like this go un-noticed? I can't think of a way this could have possibly gone un-noticed by someone at Apple. Someone at Apple had to have known about this, and didn't do a thing about it, thinking that it's just a minor problem, and no one will care. Dropped calls due to holding the phone's lower edge is not minor, it's a pretty big deal. An issue this big shouldn't go un-noticed by any company that claims to make the best products on the market for their customer. Sadly, I doubt this will stop the Mac leech-farm from clinging onto the Apple product release udder.
Plus, the fact that Jobs won't say that this is their fault is also pretty bad. As the face of your company, the right thing to do in this case would have been for Jobs to acknowledge and apologize for the fact that this was a known design flaw, and offer a better solution than just a "free case". For him to say that we know this happens, so here's a free case, isn't good enough. A recall would have been pretty bad for Apple, but it would mean a lot more to people who own the phone than free bumper cases, because not everyone wants to have that type of case (form-fitting) and it doesn't actually fix the problem, it just puts a temporary pacifier on the mouths of people who complained about it. It shows Apple took the cheap way out of this, so Apple's stock won't hit rock bottom.
I'm a happy Verizon customer with a Droid, so I wouldn't have bought one anyways, but if I owned an iPhone 4 after seeing Apple tip-toe around this, I would already be in line at an Apple Store for a refund.

Steve preached today about how Apple was going to lead the industry in making sure this antenna issue will never arise again. That the industry as a whole has flaws with their antenna's. If they are the industry leaders and this is their most recent phone, their flagship, then why is the new Motorola Droid X shipping with three antenna's? Motorola was bragging about their new tri antenna design before the iPhone 4 even shipped. But Steve said today that Apple would lead the way in antenna design? Who is the real innovator here?
Instead of calling those rubber covers "bumpers", they should call them "Life Rafts". Cause that boat is sinking people.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Motorola is all that. I'm just saying Motorola is already leading the industry in redesigns of antenna, and in-phone microphones for that matter (The Droid X will have 3)...

I think there was an article somewhere about how the iPhone 4's antenna issue was, in fact, noticed & brought up by a senior engineer at Apple, as well as through a carrier who conducted testing. Can't remember where I read it, though...

I don't like to have to put a cover on my phone. I still have an old Dare which is still kicking, and I Dropped it maybe three-four times since I had it. But I don't really encounter any signal loss (I can even still hear people clearly when they can't hear me. Maybe because I "Joined the Network" . I would of wanted to hear that a fix to the design was in place and that The current users will get a replacement.

I liked the "If you don't like it, take it back" statement. To me , that was the ultimate "F*ck You* moment in the whole press conference. Explains Steve Jobs to a T.
1. There is a problem with every cell phone (I thought Apple was the God-given innovator and the elite of cell phones. Now your bringing yourself down to the level of the lowly competitors just to argue your flaw? That kind of sounds like your saying, it was everyone else's fault, we were just following a basic blue print.)
2. If you don't like your iPhone 4, TAKE IT BACK (We don't need your kind anyway)
3. Apple introduces their own call center data (more than likely manipulated for their favor)
4. Even though there is no problem, we're going to spends hundred's of thousands of dollars to shut you up. (Not millions to fix the problem.)
5. Even our iPhone 3G was screwed up, but cases were available with the phone so no one knew (Really? Thats amazing you'd admit that, and that's really a point of argument?)
6. We found flaws with signal bars previously and fixed it right away (and yet you found ANOTHER problem with the signal bars again?)
This conference was total spin and PR hoopla. They claim to be innovators, the creators of all good ideas in technology... lol Seriously.... "Wake Up Neo"

Your definition of a man incapable of successfully running a company does not jive with the reality of the company's success under said regime. You can hate him all you want, this is America and we are afforded all rights and privileges to hate any god damned thing we want. I read this rant, and i happen to notice something
One, the starcraft II game is going to be SICK!
two, the point is that people are making apple a big deal.. Kids are into wahts cool.. whats cool is what everyone else has.. what do the cool kids have? Apple/ thats what is driving stocks up. if it wasnt for ipod, apple would still be in the game, but alot less popular. The reason is HYPE. The demi-god who calls himself steve has his cultivists market this idea. (the pc v mac commercials) yes, the OS for mac is great! but some 14 year old girl has NO idea why she needs a 1200 overpriced notebook. She just knows she "wants" do you see what im sayin? and when she gets the notebook, she all-of-a-sudden is Ace number One, cause her notebook has a glowing shape of a fruit on it!
My father, who produces the simpsons dvds, uses mac because he uses final cut pro HD, Pro Tools, HD cameras to record special features, Sennhieser $3000 mics to record the makers of the show talk to create the commentary.. and not to mention any other DVD that he is offered to produce.
He knows why he uses a Mac, my little sister doesnt!
I use PC, and yes I know why! (Games of Course!)
Please, let steve jobs humble himself, it produces character and that produces better quality!

In my line of work, if a hydraulic line springs a leak and you put duct tape on it, eventually you will need more tape or a new line. The tape only hides the problem, it doesn't fix it. Just like Apple's cases, it doesn't fix anything only covers it up. Apple, recall your faulty product and FIX the problem! Toyota did you can do it too!-Scott

This really is a non-issue. I can hold my finger over the strip on my phone and it won't make a noticeable difference in signal quality. I lose maybe 1 bar. Before 4.0.1 people saw their bars steadily dropping and thought OMG MY BARZ, when in reality you weren't losing that much of a signal. If you are in a very low service area and you are holding your hand over it then yes it may drop your call. Considering this is the one gripe people really have with the phone itself, I'd say yes non-issue. The fact is that if you don't hold your finger over the strip then you will be getting a better signal than pretty much any phone out there due to the stainless steel band which acts as an antenna. If it's such a large problem for you that it makes the device completely unusable (if say you live in a cave with 1 bar and are left-handed), then by all means return it. I don't get why people are acting like they were absolutely forced to buy this device. You could do much, much worse for a phone, and I'm not sure why there is such a strong bias toward Apple on this one. Of course this is Maximum PC and is full of arrogant PC fanboys, but objectivity is rare these days I suppose.

This constant war between pc fanboys and apple fanboys is stupid. Do you even own an iPhone 4? I do, and this hasn't been a problem at all. People hold apple to an unrealistic standard that their phone will be absolutely flawless. Other phones out there have issues that make them nearly unusable and there is not nearly as big of an uproar. The software update has alleviated the signal problem, and there is no hardware problem here. Simply an unavoidable problem with having an unconventional antenna design. This has just been ammo for dumb fanboys everywhere, and the sooner you get past your bias, the sooner you can start enjoying everything the technology world has to offer.
