OK, so your the company that finally made computers cool and sleek.

And then you put yourself on your own golden altar, and tell the WORLD,

"We are making the worlds greatest invention ever... again!"

and get all the hype, all the cultivists walk around like they are chosen by Steve Jobs himself to own a piece of history and what happened?

"Woops! we messed up! Sorry! But were still the greatest people ever so, please dont forgive us cause were not sorry.."

Saving yourself is Vista and Win7.

"We made vista, and you dont want it... We dont want it either.. were pulling it off shelves everywhere and trashing it.

Sorry vista, gotta let you go, keep in touch with updates ok!

here is windows 7

We know Windows 7 is doing just fine."

See the difference in dialog?

I wonder how many of you NTACs actually own this phone?

Putting your dislike of "the man" aside, what was wrong with the final outcome on this deal?  Simple choices really; take the free bumper, live with the design weakness or get a full refund.  Sounds pretty thorough to me.  If a company can provide a remedy, much less two, then consider yourself lucky.  Smartphones drop calls all the time.  Hell, regular phones drop calls.  This is just another case of "Make News - (and you guys) Make Hey!", with a twist of "oh yeah, another opportunity to throw stones at Jobs, Apple, the Lisa and the Newton..." type nonsense.

As far as how Apple handled it, sure it could have gone better if you want to nitpick the ****ing deal, but at the end of the day, these phones will keep selling, vastly outpacing the competition and people will forget about this "blip" in the greater scheme of things, in relatively short order.  People are funny like that.  Everybody funny, you funny too!  And I would be willing to bet that a large percentage of you NTACs will eventually go buy one if you already haven't done so.  I'd love to see the statistics on that one.  Percentage of Blog-Bombers that actually contradict their rantlife goings on, and who go and support or buy products from the company or entity they love to slam in public with full anonymity.  Just sayin...

Don't like the bumper offer? then return your phone and wait for a rev two with the improved antenna design.  I bet the car you drive has at least ONE design flub or performance issue that may have a bigger impact on your pathetic life.  Do you complain about that to no end on the interwebs?  Do you realize how much of your hard earned coin goes into transportation.  Compare that to this seemingly insignificant phone debacle.  Get real folks.  Sh!t happens.  It's not the end of the world.

Oh, and btw the way, I've never owned an iPhone and never plan on owning one.

[Nokia E71 owner. going on 3 years, and it ain't perfect either.  It drops calls in areas I wouldn't expect it to just like every other cell phone I've ever purchased.  Hmmm...could it be an inadequacy of the cell tower network, signal format or basic wireless network design criterion?  /me scratches my chin.  Oh wait, that's not a Jobs or Apple hater target.  No fun in taking shots at that.  ROFL]

Go outside and play childrenz...

The refund is for the Bumper, not the phone. You're stuck with the phone.

Negative, Apple extended a full refund for iphone4 users Read harder.

Not really, double posts do, in fact, suck.

Since you fanboi's have problems reading between the lines, a summary of Steve Job's press conference:

(To be read in a whiney, condensending tone)

Denial, denial, denial, misdirection, contradiction.

Denial, denial, smoke and mirrors, misdirection.

Denial, outright lie, half-truth, look how cool we are.

Denial, whine, free bumper, whine, contradiction.

Denial, denial, whine.

Questions?

LOL.....of course, giving away free phone cases solves the problem. Hmmmm....no.

"But it still seems crazy to us that Apple let the desire for great design get in the way of the functionality."

How much cocaine do you have to do to become as oblivious as you are?

avatar

I freaked out when I saw that quote also!

Apples main motto has always been FORM BEFORE FUNCTION!!
They should just make fashion accessories and stop trying to make anything with an OS on it.

I always thought their stuff was ugly as sin anyway, iPhones included. It is just a crummy semi-futuristic look.

In my opinion, Apple has really handled this poorly. I've gotten the feeling ever since this issue started to be talked about since the release date, that Apple PR and Steve Jobs just doesn't give a hoot about making their customers 100% satisfied in their products. This isn't a "non-issue" or an issue affecting certain iPhone 4s, but a major issue affecting every iPhone 4. The biggest question here is how in testing did the final release of a phone, of which millions of units would be sold, and would be in the biggest public spotlight for a phone, did a major issue like this go un-noticed?  I can't think of a way this could have possibly gone un-noticed by someone at Apple. Someone at Apple had to have known about this, and didn't do a thing about it, thinking that it's just a minor problem, and no one will care. Dropped calls due to holding the phone's lower edge is not minor, it's a pretty big deal. An issue this big shouldn't go un-noticed by any company that claims to make the best products on the market for their customer. Sadly, I doubt this will stop the Mac leech-farm from clinging onto the Apple product release udder.

Plus, the fact that Jobs won't say that this is their fault is also pretty bad. As the face of your company, the right thing to do in this case would have been for Jobs to acknowledge and apologize for the fact that this was a known design flaw, and offer a better solution than just a "free case". For him to say that we know this happens, so here's a free case, isn't good enough. A recall would have been pretty bad for Apple, but it would mean a lot more to people who own the phone than free bumper cases, because not everyone wants to have that type of case (form-fitting) and it doesn't actually fix the problem, it just puts a temporary pacifier on the mouths of people who complained about it. It shows Apple took the cheap way out of this, so Apple's stock won't hit rock bottom.

I'm a happy Verizon customer with a Droid, so I wouldn't have bought one anyways, but if I owned an iPhone 4 after seeing Apple tip-toe around this, I would already be in line at an Apple Store for a refund.

Steve preached today about how Apple was going to lead the industry in making sure this antenna issue will never arise again. That the industry as a whole has flaws with their antenna's. If they are the industry leaders and this is their most recent phone, their flagship,  then why is the new Motorola Droid X shipping with three antenna's?  Motorola was bragging about their new tri antenna design before the iPhone 4 even shipped. But Steve said today that Apple would lead the way in antenna design? Who is the real innovator here?

Instead of calling those rubber covers "bumpers", they should call them "Life Rafts". Cause that boat is sinking people.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Motorola is all that. I'm just saying Motorola is already leading the industry in redesigns of antenna, and in-phone microphones for that matter (The Droid X will have 3)...

avatar

thetechchild

I think there was an article somewhere about how the iPhone 4's antenna issue was, in fact, noticed & brought up by a senior engineer at Apple, as well as through a carrier who conducted testing. Can't remember where I read it, though...

I don't like to have to put a cover on my phone. I still have an old Dare which is still kicking, and I Dropped it maybe three-four times since I had it. But I don't really encounter any signal loss (I can even still hear people clearly when they can't hear me. Maybe because I "Joined the Network" . I would of wanted to hear that a fix to the design was in place and that The current users will get a replacement.

I liked the "If you don't like it, take it back" statement. To me , that was the ultimate "F*ck You* moment in the whole press conference. Explains Steve Jobs to a T.

1. There is a problem with every cell phone (I thought Apple was the God-given innovator and the elite of cell phones. Now your bringing yourself down to the level of the lowly competitors just to argue your flaw? That kind of sounds like your saying, it was everyone else's fault, we were just following a basic blue print.)

2. If you don't like your iPhone 4, TAKE IT BACK (We don't need your kind anyway)

3. Apple introduces their own call center data (more than likely manipulated for their favor)

4. Even though there is no problem, we're going to spends hundred's of thousands of dollars to shut you up. (Not millions to fix the problem.)

5. Even our iPhone 3G was screwed up, but cases were available with the phone so no one knew (Really?  Thats amazing you'd admit that, and that's really a point of argument?)

6. We found flaws with signal bars previously and fixed it right away (and yet you found ANOTHER problem with the signal bars again?)

This conference was total spin and PR hoopla. They claim to be innovators, the creators of all good ideas in technology... lol  Seriously.... "Wake Up Neo"

Mister Friendly

What would you have liked to have seen them do?

avatar

BuLLg0d

I don't want them to do anything more. I'm having too much fun watching another Apple implosion. Steve Job's is much better at rebuilding.... He gets too empirical when he's on top. He self destruct's with his own arrogance. He is a creative genius but has blinders... he never sees the weakened flanks....and he always falls.

avatar

Mister Friendly

Market cap baby, they get it, you don't. Your indignation is hilarious and is working out great for you.

avatar

BuLLg0d

I don't get that? Really?  It's basically in neon. Like, hot pink neon.

avatar

Mister Friendly

Your definition of a man incapable of successfully running a company does not jive with the reality of the company's success under said regime. You can hate him all you want, this is America and we are afforded all rights and privileges to hate any god damned thing we want. But when we hate something so hard that we attempt to bend reality, unsuccessfully and then expound our broken perception on the internet, it's also our right to laugh at you.

avatar

BuLLg0d

Outright laughing at me is fine.  I'm not exactly sure why you are angry unless this is a troll attempt.  I'll say it first... "I'm Sorry (you bought an iPhone 4)"

Hey, Steve's calling, he said he needs you.... and something about, bring your kneepads again... and, wait, hard to hear him, oh, he say's and lube.... and... *reception*.... damn... his phone must have lost the call.

avatar

Mister Friendly

Why is every other post in these Apple dogpile threads some kind of creepy Steve Jobs fanfic?

Let me make it more clear:

You: I hate Steve Jobs, he is a horrible CEO.

Me: He continues to rocket apple shares ever higher and brings nothing but prosperity to their shareholders. assertion denied.

You: TROLL! (short one act play about the Steve Jobs that lives in your head.)

What am I missing?

I read this rant, and i happen to notice something

One, the starcraft II game is going to be SICK!

two, the point is that people are making apple a big deal.. Kids are into wahts cool.. whats cool is what everyone else has.. what do the cool kids have? Apple/ thats what is driving stocks up. if it wasnt for ipod, apple would still be in the game, but alot less popular. The reason is HYPE. The demi-god who calls himself steve has his cultivists market this idea. (the pc v mac commercials) yes, the OS for mac is great! but some 14 year old girl has NO idea why she needs a 1200 overpriced notebook. She just knows she "wants" do you see what im sayin? and when she gets the notebook, she all-of-a-sudden is Ace number One, cause her notebook has a glowing shape of a fruit on it!

My father, who produces the simpsons dvds, uses mac because he uses final cut pro HD, Pro Tools, HD cameras to record special features, Sennhieser  $3000 mics to record the makers of the show talk to create the commentary.. and not to mention any other DVD that he is offered to produce.

He knows why he uses a Mac, my little sister doesnt!

I use PC, and yes I know why! (Games of Course!)

Please, let steve jobs humble himself, it produces character and that produces better quality!

In my line of work, if a hydraulic line springs a leak and you put duct tape on it, eventually you will need more tape or a new line. The tape only hides the problem, it doesn't fix it. Just like Apple's cases, it doesn't fix anything only covers it up. Apple, recall your faulty product and FIX the problem! Toyota did you can do it too!-Scott

About as long as you've been working for Apple.

This really is a non-issue.  I can hold my finger over the strip on my phone and it won't make a noticeable difference in signal quality.  I lose maybe 1 bar.  Before 4.0.1 people saw their bars steadily dropping and thought OMG MY BARZ, when in reality you weren't losing that much of a signal.  If you are in a very low service area and you are holding your hand over it then yes it may drop your call.  Considering this is the one gripe people really have with the phone itself, I'd say yes non-issue.  The fact is that if you don't hold your finger over the strip then you will be getting a better signal than pretty much any phone out there due to the stainless steel band which acts as an antenna.  If it's such a large problem for you that it makes the device completely unusable (if say you live in a cave with 1 bar and are left-handed), then by all means return it.  I don't get why people are acting like they were absolutely forced to buy this device.  You could do much, much worse for a phone, and I'm not sure why there is such a strong bias toward Apple on this one.  Of course this is Maximum PC and is full of arrogant PC fanboys, but objectivity is rare these days I suppose.

avatar

jwavisjr

ARROGANCE?  Give m a break, no body is more arrogant then Apple fanboys!!!  As well as Apple.  This obviously is  a problem and covering the phone is not fixing the problem, it's like putting duck tape on on a leaky pipe.  It's really not that complicated, just admit there's a problem and fix the damn phones.  No Brainer.

avatar

austin43

This constant war between pc fanboys and apple fanboys is stupid.  Do you even own an iPhone 4?  I do, and this hasn't been a problem at all.  People hold apple to an unrealistic standard that their phone will be absolutely flawless.  Other phones out there have issues that make them nearly unusable and there is not nearly as big of an uproar.  The software update has alleviated the signal problem, and there is no hardware problem here.  Simply an unavoidable problem with having an unconventional antenna design.  This has just been ammo for dumb fanboys everywhere, and the sooner you get past your bias, the sooner you can start enjoying everything the technology world has to offer.

avatar

heronhaus

You say that "This constant war between pc fanboys and apple fanboys is stupid.", and yet, in the same post you call call people who don't agree with your OPINION "dumb fanboys", thereby adding flame to the fire.  How about getting past your "bias" before telling people to get past theirs.

avatar

narbytrout

The "software fix" was just a way for the iPhone4 to display more bars of signal strength than it really has...

The "fix" was purely cosmetic.

Wow, it is almost farcicle how Apple dupes thier customers.

avatar

GreenTurtle

People hold Apple to an unrealistic standard for their products because that is what Apple advertises. Unless you think calling the ipad " Magical " is not unrealistic. As just one example.

avatar

Mister Friendly

So when Microsoft promises the world amazing shit and brings to market, well just plain shit... this is acceptable as hell because OMFG, what? You got your computer to POST on the second attempt post build? what? So happy to see the XP OEM install screen that you wept? Apple marketing is the same kind of madison avenue horseshit as everyone else's, only apple actually ships units. You hate them because they defy your definition of a hobbiest technology.

Holy crap seeing you people defend Google and Microsoft at the same time you slam Apple for being a vile capitalist entity is fucking adorable. APPLE IS UNREALISTIC WITH MARKETING SPEAKZ.

avatar

GreenTurtle

Whoa, whoa, whoa hold the phone . I'm not sure at what point I said I hated Apple, or loved Microsoft ( don't use their products ) or Google. I only recall Microsoft promising something about churros though :)

avatar

Mister Friendly

They explained the problem, offered a free and easy fix. Extended a full refund to those that find the situation intolerable. This isn't enough for MaxiumumPC's comment trolls. Other than Jobs putting a gun to his head and pulling the trigger (lulz) what would like for the to have done? Full recall? For what? THe already sold 3 million of these phones and the crying is coming hardest for non owners than it is from owners (who you will call stupid and then claim that arrogance is all theirs.)

I find these forums amusing as hell.

avatar

The lawsuits that are flying against apple from people (and states) are iPhone users that are fed up with SJ's gunk. I currently don't own any apple product and have no plans to purchase any either.

I think you need to go read up on trolling a little because you are the troll. Not us. This is our site. A PC enthusiast site. Now if we were to goto the apple forums, then we would be trolls.

Your english is amusing as hell.

Sorry, been posting from an HTC EVO :(

By the way, this is my site too jack, you want to talk complex builds? Fine, been reading MaxPC since it was called Boot and have dropped more money on building high end PCs than I have on cars. I like computers. All of them.

avatar

TechJunkie

I have an HTC EVO too and I love it. Best phone I have ever had and the pleasure of using. I too have also been reading MaxPC since it was boot magazine and have dropped thousands into building custom PC's. One thing your forgetting though....crapples are not modifiable by any means compared to PC's. So I consider them user-unfriendly, over-priced, shiney pieces of jism juice. So when you buy one, that's it your done for the most part.

And get my name right please. It's not just Jack....it's Jackme Off.
