Apple Unveils World's First Multi-Touch Mouse
Posted 10/21/09 at 12:15:10 PM by Paul Lilly
Whether it's your smartphone, e-book reader, or portable media player, the multi-touch trend is taking over just about every possible segment, and that now includes the computer mouse. Not surprisingly, it's Apple -- not Logitech or Microsoft -- who's able to lay claim to the world's first multi-touch mouse.
Dubbed the Magic Mouse, Apple's latest rodent comes with a single button and sports a hard acrylic multi-touch surface on the top. It also boasts wireless connectivity, a low profile design, Bluetooth, and a claimed four-month battery life.
Those who have ever navigated a Mac trackpad will feel right at home with the ability to perform two-finger swipes, but the Magic Mouse also allows single-finger horizontal and vertical scrolling and software-based inertia. What you won't find, however, is pinch-zoom support.
The Magic Mouse goes on sale today for $69 and comes standard with every new iMac.

hm, I was expecting better coverage of the new announcements, like Apple's Q4 results and mac mini server.

For me, touch control is just not sensitive/responsive enough to actually be of use in such a scale. Combined with Apple's "innovation" (re-branding of other products with an extra 0 on the end of the price), this screams 0/10.
hah i bet it still has one

hah i bet it still has one freaking button because the gimp retards over at apple don't know how to make a two or more button mouse, all apple suck Donkey D**K, includding that pos i poop they got out the only reason they are surviving is because there are idiots out there that must have the new phone that just came out because buttons are sooo not popular anymore and your not cool unless you have a phone that displays a picture of the button but not the actual thing that way your can smudge the hell outa your phone to call your mama so she can tell you were your sack is DEATH TO MAC LONG LIVE PC

TOUCH SCREEN is nothing new its been out for quite sometime my local denys has had it far before crapple started messing with
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touchscreen
apple just took what was there and applied it to what ever garbage they had laying around and charged top dollar for it i.e. iphone, its still just a PHONE, another being the ipod its still just a mp3 player now its more like a game boy
as far as punctuation goes i did not know i was getting graded never the less still does not change the fact that mac sucks innovation or not
like Aziobron said its a toy nothing else, and no i didn not watch the video i much rather watch paint dry

ya, seriously dude. Calm down. It is a cool innovative peripheral. Could have been slightly better implimented, but cool none the less.
You know what else is cool? PUNCTUATION AND SPELLING!
There are plently of "Anti-Mac" people out there, however most of them can see innovation when it's presented to them. Just 'cause it's Apple, doesn't mean that they can't make some neat stuff from time to time. And if you saw the video, you'd realize how wrong you are about the button situation. It does have 2 "buttons".

im not a fan of touch

touchscreen technology is really cool to play with, but for anything other than pure novelty or goofing off with dumb little itouch/iphone games, i wouldnt want touch. i like the tangibility of a button, the click you can feel and hear. typing on a touch screen? forget about it. this is a cool mouse and i applaud the innovation, and would certainly like to play with it, but ill stick with my regular click-mouse and scroll wheel.

I also just thought, I quite enjoy resting my fingers on the mouse button. Especially when gaming, my fingers don't come off the mouse. Seems like the thing would just get confused as to when I was actually gestering something or just moving my fingers.

The only "feature" of that mouse that I wouldn't mind having on a normal mouse, is touch sensitive scrolling. Having a single touch sensitive strip where the wheek is that works as a wheel. Tap it, and there's your 3rd mouse button.
I guess one issue with my idea is, people accidentally touching the scroll strip and activating the 3rd mouse button.

Autopsy the "Magic Mouse" Latest and Greatest, or Just Hype?
Submitted by pcsbyte on Wed, 10/21/2009 - 1:09pm
Fact: Mac is expensive and used by a very few in the corporate world.
Fact: Software is produced, for the most part, entirely on pc based apps. Take your pick... UNIX, Windows, Linux.
Apple is a pioneer in the industry, but pc's have remained the standard for decades
The proof is in the pudding. Request the Mouse and put it through the maze.
Look at this. We thought out

Look at this. We thought out of the box to design this mouse. Instead of using silly things like wheels and buttons to do everything, we have multitouch, cause everything we make has to have multitouch. Why would you want to use a wheel to scroll anyways when you can use multitouch. Back and forth, those buttons kept our mouse from looking sleek. Speaking of sleek, we also made it as flat as we could so it would feel just like a touchpad.
Stay tuned for our next greatest product, the multitouch keyboard. Why would you have all those buttons...

One of the computers I have is a 13" macbook pro and all it does is prove how stupid multitouch gestures are. All the time when I'm trying to select multiple folders it starts shifting the size of all the files making a mess of everything because it thinks I'm trying to gesture it to act like a spastic retard. Touch should stick to touch screens.
damn right its a fail
Submitted by dracx619 on Wed, 10/21/2009 - 10:37am
ugh, apple and their "innovations." using the stupid mighty mouse alone at work caused me to nearly want to cut my hand off (thanks for my msft mouse for saving my butt) this thing would definitely kill me. in terms of "inovation" msft has been working on this for a while and they have 3 different concept that are all more usefull end ergonomically designed. plus, seriously, why the heck would you want to use gestures? just cause they look cool? give me function over design please...
Fail

So innovation is one with complication now? Cool idea, just not viable for real life.

Check it out, decide which is better. If you STILL need to use multi-touch with a mouse, why use a mouse? And does the Magic Mouse have a second mouse button yet?
CLICK.
Nice concept, but....

.....my Logitech G5 would kill it in the comfort/ruggedness factor with my big hands. I think I would break that thing trying to use it, so, even if they lay claim to it, they still make it too small for most poeple to use.

stupid idea
Submitted by johnny3144 on Wed, 10/21/2009 - 9:39am
it seems like a really stupid idea to me. instead of clicking physical buttons on my mouse, now i gotta remember 50 gestures to do what i used to just click. 2 finger swipe to go forward and back instead of thumb bottons. placing finger in specific oritation for features like panning, or scrolling... why do all those when you can just use scroll whell and mouse 3?
not mentioning the low profile crap... must be really uncomfortable.
apple fanboy will prob still buy it cause it's shinny thou.
