Apple also adertises the new iPad as supporting 4G LTE tethering without a needed clarification. The problem is that such tethering is not yet supported by AT&T. It works fine apparently at Verizon.

TechLarry

I see nothing here any different than anyone else pushing 4G.

chop_slap

Of course Apple would take advantage of idiots. Its their claim to fame and $$$.

I see the average IQ level of the forum just dropped by 40% :(

Technically there are NO 4G wireless providers and/or devices anywhere. All companies that advertize their network as 4G are doing it because it sounds faster than regular old 3G.

To be a true 4G a network has to provide 100Mbit/sec speed from high speed moving vehicles - like trains, to 1Gbit/sec for pedestrians or stationary users.

Compare that to the 40Mbit/sec companies advertize as "4G" - it's just marketing bullshit.

LTE Advanced is the next technology that will come close to real 4G speeds. So maybe iPad6-7 will have it.

For those that think there isn't a 4G Standard:
http://www.nd.edu/~mhaenggi/NET/wireless/4G/

The companies that advertise 4G anything for the US are all blowing smoke. We haven't put a 4G network out there as yet. All the 4G here is just a slightly upgraded 3G.

avatar

big_montana

Sorry, but what is currently being marketed as 4G was 4G when the standards were originally drafted. When Sprint rolled out their WiMax network (and everyone else was had LTE in the planning stage), the standards body decided to change to change the rules, and change what can be classified as 4G. You do not change the rules in the middle of the game.

Wingzero_x

Really you think because they headed their web page with "4G Wireless standards" it makes it official standards? Who are the governing councils, what iso standardards do they use?

Look up HTML standards, USB standards, Pantone Matching System, heck look up food naming laws, and you'll see that in order to have standards there has to be standard protocols established. Since as your link illustrates anything outside the range of 3G can be legally called 4G.

I'm sorry all I'm reading is "Cash strapped European governments, putting the screws to successful American companies."

apparently apple products dont "just work" hmm who would have thought ?

...always a constructive contribution. Did you even read the article? Can you??

hook, line, and sinker. you are SO predictable and take the bait EVERYTIME. i can read you like a book. a really bad book. i'm talking lord steve biography bad. anyways, hope you haven't missed me too much over the last month or so. i know it's hard to believe in this day and age that some people unlike youreself, don't live and breath the internet. i fail to see what they "innovated and invented" this time. was it high res diplays ? i can't help it that the "latest and greatest" thing fails to work when advertised to. it's all on them. a shitty company puts out shitty products. i guess you're still pissed that grandpa adolf and daddy steve both died in wars. grandpa to the allies and daddy to android. the apple (see what i done there?) don't fall far from the tree therefor, you'll die in a war as well. notice the similarities ?? probably not, as you all will die to something starting with the letter "a". can you guess what war will be the cause of your death ? more than likely no, so i'll put into a language you can understand. i just hope that google translate is up to date in backwoods hick. ding ol mountain dew, dang ol nascar, daggum copenhagen long cut snuff, yee haw lynard skynyrd. now in english, your beloved apple will be the end of you.

And there goes another 20% :(

You should go back and read this shit you type ten years from now when you're really an adult and not some moronic troll pretending to be a veteran of foreign conflicts demanding everyone's respect on a Jobs Obituary article.

You admitted in the very first sentence that all you are is a troll and, as in all your comments past, you have nothing of substance to contribute. You've got to be the stupidest and most childish idiot I've ever engaged with. "I'm a German Redneck." LOL Remember when you called me a hipster and a redneck in the same sentence (or what passes for a sentence for you?) :D

So: did you read the article? I'm asking again because you've said nothing constructive on the substance of any of it.

stupid is as stupid does. yes, i've read the article and fully understand that apple continues to hype up its products by saying they can perform tasks that they clearly can't YET, pathetic fanboys such as yourself continue to buy into it and keep forking over money. how could you possibly call me stupid when it's YOU that keeps biting ? the internet would be a stale and boring place without people like you. i find one person per site that i go to and turn them into my personal plaything and you just happen to be it on here. there is no pretending about being a veteran but it does piss me off to no end that i have put my life on the line multiple times to protect worthless people. (i.e. you) it still seems that your lack of comprehension is still mind-numbing as to think that i ever "demanded respect." i simply implied that respect is earned not given out

avatar

Engelsstaub

You must have read my comment below: that SURE sounds like some "fanboy buying into" everything Apple does or whatever, yeah? I'm just a "fanboy" because I DON'T have an irrational and psychotic hatred for a company that I will never patronize, right?

"...unlike you, ive fought 2 wars for my country and have earned my right to freedom of speech. respect is something im all out of due to it having to be EARNED not giving away. so yeah"

You implied that, because you (like a whole lot of other people) served in a conflict or war, you are entitled to "free speech" and inferred that someone from Canada (Caboose,) or someone who hasn't done exactly as you, has "earned" no such rights. We don't "earn" rights that are granted to us by our constitutions. You are demanding respect through your immaterial ramblings about your service and your mistaken ideas of who has rights and who doesn't. You also imply that some person behind a comment on the 'net needs to earn your respect...which you're "all out of."

So basically you're just saying "I'm an asshole. I'm going to say asshole things to people until you earn my respect which is impossible. Even if it wasn't impossible I'm all out of it anyway like an asshole."

You also assume that you know something about people on the internet based on comments that you don't agree with.

You didn't protect or do anything for me, worthless or not. Try to go outside, smile, and see past your delusions.

You were not drafted (if you even served.) You volunteered. You didn't earn shit and no one owes you a bit of gratitude. You didn't go to war to protect your freedom of speech. You went to fight terrorists. And no one cares on the internet about anything you claim to have done.

So...you really are a veteran (but disrespect another because you don't agree with him on some "serious" shit like tech products) and your purpose on the internet is to "find one person per site that i go to and turn them into (your) personal plaything??" Jesus... I know I've been hard on you here and before but in all seriousness consider talking to someone. It seems you hate everyone (Germans, Mac-users, rednecks, hipsters, people who haven't served, people who have, MPs, etc.) Everyone except your daughter? (Just guessing.)

I remember reading in a textbook how 3G 5-10 mbs speeds were coming online and that 10-100 mbs 4G networks weren't far behind; so far we have BS and still use LAN connections.

avatar

Danthrax66

the 4g specification is for 100mbps+ all of these 4g networks are bullshit, they are just slightly faster than older 3g.

avatar

Scatter

What really needs to be done is to create a clear standard for 4G. 4G in the US should be the same as 4G in the U.K.

avatar

Wingzero_x

Somebody speaking with some sense. You are absolutely right. How can anybody hold a company up to a standard that does not exist?

avatar

Engelsstaub

"Hey...as long as it meets the standards of the 'all-important' US-market, right?"

Seriously I wouldn't think Apple would be as America-centric as so many other companies, but I guess they really are. iTunes Match took forever to come online in other markets too.

They really should know better than to advertise as 4G in markets where it won't actually work.

avatar

warlok180

Well we all know that every company finds ways to stretch things in their marketing campaigns. But the bottom line in this case is that Apple is at least doing the right thing and offering full refunds for those that want it.

avatar

Deanjo

"iTunes Match took forever to come online in other markets too."

The reason for the delay is because a deal has to be reached with each countries respective music artists association before the service could be launched. Same types of deals have to be reached for services like Netflix as well and is the reason why Hulu is still only "US only". Yes it sucks but put blame where blame is due, on your own respective goverments regulations.

avatar

Engelsstaub

Good points.

Apple did make it right. Dell/Alienware sold many of us a really expensive computer (the m15x) that was defective-by-design in more than one way and made no attempt to make it right (other than discontinuing the model effectively taking the money and running.)

...and I suppose I should consider governmental regulations and such pertaining to iTunes Match.

avatar

firefox91

Can't be.... Apple is perfect. Everyone knows that.

It's always good to read that mega corporations who lie in advertising on a regular basis get smacked down for it. Now if they would just do the same thing to the vaporware "4G" in the US.........
