Apple Claims 'Stolen' iPhone, Wants It Back
We don't know if the latest bit of news puts to rest the whole lost/stolen iPhone 4G saga or adds more fuel to the conspiratory flames, but for what it's worth, Gizmodo is now claiming that Apple wants its hardware back.
"It has come to our attention that Gizmodo is currently in possession of a device that belongs to Apple. This letter constitutes a formal request that you return the device to Apple. Please let me know where to pick up the unit," Bruce Sewell, Senior Vice President and General Counsel, purportedly wrote in a letter.
According to Gizmodo, they've been more than willing to return the device so long as Apple went on the record claiming it belonged to them. If that's how it truly went down, than Apple found itself stuck between a rock and Gizmodo, and chose Gizmodo. Here's the response Apple received:
Bruce, thanks.
Here's Jason Chen, who has the iPhone. And here's his address. You two should coordinate a time.[Blah Blah Blah Address]
Happy to have you pick this thing up. Was burning a hole in our pockets. Just so you know, we didn't know this was stolen [as they might have claimed. meaning, real and truly from Apple. It was found, and to be of unproven origin] when we bought it. Now that we definitely know it's not some knockoff, and it really is Apple's, I'm happy to see it returned to its rightful owner.
P.S. I hope you take it easy on the kid who lost it. I don't think he loves anything more than Apple.
Well played, but the question is, who are the ones being played, Joe Public and friends or Apple and Co.?

Nowithstanding the fact that I think our Apple cover is truly fair and balanced -- and not skewed in any particular fanboy direction, either positively or negatively -- have the MPC haters out there ever even watched political shows on Fox News or MSNBC??? Whether the network is skewed to the left or right, they spend a lot of time -- the majority of their air time -- covering the opposing ideological camp! My point being, even if Maximum PC was supposed to be resolutely anti-Apple (and it isn't) it would still make sense for us to cover Apple news -- particularly screw-ups like this embarrasing blunder with iPhone 4G, or whatever the hell you want to call it.

News flash, Macs are still personal computers. We may not LIKE them because they're overpriced closed systems, but they ARE computers.

I deny that fact. In my personal world a Mac is a metal and plastic paper weight.

I mean seriously, dogging out a site for having apple news. Some of us actually enjoy articles that related to all tech out there. I've been reading since it was called BOOT, and now that its actually MaximumPC you feel it should not post about Apple/Google/Linux or whatever. GTFO last time I checked PC stood for Personal Computer not Wintel clone so stfu and leave already instead of always posting hate towards a publication that has been a leader in the industry for a while. So go on an read some other lame publication (computer shopper anyone?) and leave us to our articles about EVERYTHING we like to read!

It's not that we hate Apple stories its that we hate Apple. There have been way too many positive Apple articles here lately. No nobspodcast and that god damned spam filter just has everyone really upset and irritable. I'm sorry your offended. But it's really unprecedented for MaximumPC to do so many stories on Apple products. I have been reading the mag since 1999. I consider myself a long time reader and fan of the mag and site.

The irony here is that this is a story about Apple getting the shaft, which should appeal to strictly Windows-based PC zealots.
BTW, the recent uptick in Apple stories was hardly avoidable considering we had the iPad release, iPhone OS 4 announcement, and a lost/stolen iPhone 4G prototype all in a short period of time. Barring any more major Apple-y stories, things will start reverting back to normal.

Who among us believe that the really went down as advertised? More likely to be a clever means to market the pending iPhone update release.

In the most general sense, I doubt anything really goes down as reported. But I also think that this was not an opportunitistic publicity stunt on Apple's part. Nope, this goes down as one of the biggest security blunders in consumer technology history. Epic fail is right.
