basically a smart phone but bigger, not for enterprise apps or a replacement for the business laptop.

so yeah consumers with extra money to burn who found the netbooks were a moneyloser now jumping on the pads.

still too low in storage and cpu power for much. so agree with some industry pundits- this will eat into netbook sales. not much into laptop sales. though being touted as a PC killer - will not replace the PC

I would use a tablet if someone gave me one, but otherwise I don't see the point in such a device. It's cool, it's new, it's just a fad. I'm sure there's some people, mostly businesses, that would have use for such a device when they're constantly on the go since it's much lighter than a laptop. The devices aren't really practical for the price.

All the hate, I can feel it. Just because apple release a new or upgraded product, then the devil has been released on earth. Ha ha ha. I am a simple man, I love PC's and android (and have both), BUT ..... if I was given a Ipad / Ipad2, I would be a very happy man. I have yet to find a tablet that matches the Ipad spec wise. (10 hr battery being the main thing). And I hate the fact that you MUST use iTunes and the fact  that you don't get a camera and no Flash support is unforgivable. and the price, well the price is way too much.  But after saying all that, there is no denying that Apple products look great and just work and work well. (If they didn't, they wouldn't be successful, would they) Would I buy an iphone or an ipad - NO !!!!!

Maybe it has been done, but ideally, the best option would be to 'android' a 'Ipad' and get the best of both worlds. Now wouldn't that be awesome .....  Would I buy a ipad with android installed - HELL YEAH !!!!! That might worth $1000

I was actually thinking of buying an iPad for my son (who is autistic.) I've read good things about that...I dunno.

Guess he'll have to wait for this one?

All I care about is when Apple is going to pay a dividend on its stock. They are sitting on a mountain of cash. For what? They could probably lose half their cash reserve and still have plenty left over for mergers, acquisitions, and R&D. That cheapskate Jobs is directly responsible for stiffing the shareholders.

OMG!!!! Another iProduct that I have no interest in getting!

Honestly, two cameras, dual core processor. The Xoom just came out with that. No upgraded screen. No micro sd port. Seriously Apple is supposed to be the "cool" groundbreaking company and there's nothing that great about this new ipad its more like an update to stay with the new tablets rather than an actually new version. I've never cared for apple products and honestly don't have any, but you know what it would be nice if someone would come out with something that would really blow my socks off. Apple stop messing around and get to work making something revolutionary not just a little upgrade.

avatar

aviaggio

Cool, maybe, but groundbreaker? Never. For all the talk about how "revolutionary" the iPad is all you need to remember is that it's an iPod Touch with a big screen. Certainly not revolutionary or even magical.

People seem to think Apple products are something special because of their industrial design (and some good-old fashioned brainwashing). They look all nice and shiny on the outside, but on the inside they are 100% mediocre. Toss in the high cost and close ecosystem and you got a whole lot of nothing.

This feels more like a 1.5 version than a 2.0 version to me. Not that big of an upgrade over the original it seems. More likely released right now to take the wind out of the sails of the Motorola Xoom which seems to be the only real alternative to the iPad.  Bet we will see a 3.0 version with an higher resolution amoled screen in time for christmas.

iOS has no way of taking advantage of a faster processor or faster graphics.  For a company that emphasizes appearance so much, you'd think they'd add some graphical flare to the stock apps, and the interface overall.  But no, they're still pushing the same flat, stagnant, dated interface from 2007.

They're still trying to get by with the same stupid screen size and resolution.  I thought we all graduated to widescreen half a decade ago.  I can't remember the last time I watched anything in 4:3.  Get with the times, Apple.

And they still haven't fixed the POS notification system.  Android's notification bar has been rocking since '08, and Apple still hasn't gotten a clue.

And of course, any new communication features serve only to facilitate connectivity between Apple hardware and software.

I'm unimpressed.  I'll be sticking with Honeycomb.

avatar

aviaggio

But that's the way Apple rolls. When was the last time they really made something that was extraordinary, especially in their software? They do the least amount of work possible to keep the gravy train moving along.

avatar

Eoraptor

No kidding. It used to be that every product that Apple released was an extraordinary study in design and experimentation. The original bondi blue iMac that could get you online within ten minutes of unboxing (in the dialup era) the infinitely posable desk-lamp imac, the original iphone which redefined the entire industry.

Even the failures were at least unique experiments, like the over-heating mac cube and the hockeypuck mouse. They may have blown goats, but we DO still remember them and the lessons learned from them.

but these days? its all about cranking out the next iteration of what you've already got a copy of, just to make you buy it again. it's the DVD theory of doing business, sell new editions of the same product with only miniscule changes, to maximize profits.

I have a simpleton's veiw of the world, I beleve anyone who purchases a product from apple IS an apple fanboy. No one else in their right mind would waste extreme amounts of money for locked down, overpriced, dumbed down, devices and (so called) PC's. Want to get what you pay for? go Windows or Linux. Want the ultimate mobile OS? Go ANDROID. And if for no other reason, do it to be part of the soulution not the probem.

I'd  like to say thanks to the acadamy, and everyone who commented below this. "I'm not the first king of controversy, but I am the worst thing sense Elvis Presley"- Eminem

I love getting you guys in a frenzy; it's so easy and yet so entertaining.

On a side note, I don't like Steve Jobs but I do respect him. With out him apple would not be around anymore period; but what Steve did best is realize that not evryone needs to care about a products features if you turn it into a BRAND, that celeberties and other "cool" people buy.

As far as the iphone and ipad go, I love them! No i'd never buy one in a million years but their nessesary in a sense of compititon, and right now Apple has to play catch up for a change.

I have a slight issue with your idea of an Apple fanboi. See, IMO, someone that does their research extensivly before hand, weighs all options, and then picks a product based on their findings that fits their needs cannot be called a fanboi. Someone that blindly goes out and buys a product from $company because "THEY ARE THE BEST THING EVER AND THEY SAID SO!", and no amount of information to the contrariy will convince them otherwise is a fanboi.

When I was car shopping, I had a few people making fun of me, and trying to question my sanity because I picked a 2010 Ford Fusion over another brand. But I did a lot of research. Narrowed down price, then performance and features, warranty, reputation and read both professional and amateur (aka current owner) reviews and based my opinion on all of that information. In the end, my choices were a Nissan Altima and the Ford Fusion. The deal breaker was that I got a better price on the Fusion. I love my Fusion and think its an awesome car. Does that make me a Ford fanboi?

I will admit though, that the majority of the Apple fans that post on this site are very deep in to fanboi territory.

I consider myself foremost a PC guy who has come to appreciate some of the things that Apple makes. I have an iPhone and for my wife an iPad and iMac. However, I do prefer the PC that I built over any of the other Apple products in our household---mainly because I built it and it's a damn nice machine.

Everybody has valid points about Apple's "closed" and controlled system. But that's why you have a choice and you make that with your wallet. I think that Apple has a great OS and they DO build great quality machines albeit overpriced. Windows 7 has narrowed that gap and I'm anxious to see how much better Windows 8 will be.  I also hands down believe Apple's got the best quality customer service compared to most of the PC makers based on my experience.

Fanboy? I think not. Again, I just appreciate what both Apple and my PC offer and love the choice of using either one. Both have their pros and cons. Would it be wrong to consider that  the vast majority on this website are PC fanboys given the extreme hatred of any Apple product regardless if you've ever used one of their products before? I just think you have to go with what you like and consider the features as Caboose said and make your choice accordingly. Why the hate?

Because everything Jobs does is destestable to me. He is an egomaniacal sociopath who fosters an entire collective of cult-like worshippers into giving him ridiculous amounts of money in order to sustain some kind of retarded social status. Everything he does and everything he stands for is the complete opposite of what a tech company and CEO should do.

And everytime you buy an Apple product, everytime you buy a song on iTunes or an app from the App Store, you're feeding him and saying "yeah, I support this guy". Which is why Apple will NEVER see a dime of my money.

avatar

Engelsstaub

That last line sounded more like a self-righteous poseur than anything I've read from "Apple fanbois."

Who the fuck cares what you like and don't like and what you'll spend your lunch-money on? I honestly believe that you just sign right in the moment you see any story on an Apple product to begin your stupid counter-evangelization no matter what else is going on in the world...yours or anyone else's.

You never add anything constructive to any of these comment-threads; just the same tired crap over and over. WE GET IT: you hate a corporation that is incapable of returning your hatred and it's NOT pathetic.

Now please for the love of all that is sacred and pure STFU. Thanks.

So a little bit faster (just because you have a dual core processor doesn't mean its going to be twice as fast, only a Apple fanboy will drink from that river) a little bit thinner, 720 video recording, and a front facing camera which really should of been on the first iPad. I will congradulate Apple for keeping pricing the same, good job, I totally though Apple was going to up the price. But again, no USB, no SD card, no thunderbolt, no flash, no functionality. So...iPad 1.5, when was the iPad 2 comming out? Hopefully the iPad will drop in price to $150-$200 that will be worth the buy. So all those rumors the fanboys were saying about a better screen, actual connectivity, and thunderbolt, nah...Apple wouldn't let the ship sail. Think iPad 10. Really, I don't see anyone using a big 10 inch screen as a video recording device and having a faster processor/graphics isn't really needed on iOS doesn't perform anything so why would it need better performance? I know, I know, its shiny and looks thin, WOW!

avatar

aviaggio

They're dropping the price of the iPad 1 by $100. Big deal. Though you'll probably be able to find used ones on eBay for a lot less, as the fanbois start dumping them after buying the new one.

avatar

Eoraptor

my thought is "so what"

this pad has roughly the same specs as a few android tablets to come out since the first one. Perhaps the only feature really worth mentioning is the dualcore proc, which is only just starting to show up in phones and tablets. Given apple's recent stand on subscriptions and purchasing, which is basically "BOHICA" to publishers and distributors, the walled garden is getting pretty moldy and this new window isn't going to help it outside of the fanboy community.

I want one, but... there's the $$ issue.  Which isn't so bad since I can claim it on taxes next year anyway.

Did I hear correctly that this won't support hotspot over CDMA (iPhone 4 on Verizon)?  So this is something we should expect from a combo of iPhone5 and iPad3? Yes, I'm one of those who is believing the hype that an iPad3 will be released in September.

My origional iPad is getting awefully heavy. It would be a real shame if it were to drop....

avatar

Gonna replace it with something that won't be considered obsolite 6mo after launch? Something that you can have full control over? Something that isn't an iDevice?
