I would not count RIM out yet, remember that only at the end of August did the OS7 phones start selling, so those stats are only from one week of sales.  Indicators are that OS7 phones are selling very well word wide, and several reports of major US and Euro vendors running out of stock.  RIM may not gain back major market share with the OS7 phones but I am pretty sure they will stop the slide.

Also remember that Android is an OS NOT a phone manufacture, so it is deceiving to start with to quote Android market share verse RIM and Apple that actually make phones....   Give us stats about Samsung, HTC and other Android phone makers an then that stat will mean something real.

The stat does mean something real since the article is clearly comparing the market share of OS's, not hardware. Neither RIM nor Apple license their OS to other companies (although RIM makes multiple different divices with their OS).

This.

Its kind of irritating when people constantly use that excuse. No, we are comparing OS's, not specific phones. If Android was limited to only one phone, it is very likely that phone would be outselling the iPhone. And then we would be hearing a different excuse from the Apple people.

99% of the people that are gonna buy an iPhone already have one so releasing a new model won't change much since it will be the same iDouches re-buying into the same closed eco-system.

They might gain a few people jumping off the BB sinking ship tho.

Yeah, this is the factor that no one takes into consideration. When the iPhone 5 comes out all the iPhanbois will toss their iPhone 4s on eBay and run out to buy a 5. So yes, they'll sell a ton of phones, but they're not actually increasing their market share because their base isn't actually expanding. They're just selling new hardware to people that were stupid enough to buy last year's model and couldn't go on living without this year's model.

I also find it very telling now that Apple's market share is tumbling like a California mudslide they've kicked their legal department into overdrive as a way of knocking out their main competitors. Y'know, instead of building better products or changing their MO so that consumers will actually want to buy their iCrap. If you can't beat 'em, sue 'em.

"Google is in a good position, but the iPhone 5 will give Android a run for its money."

While the iPhone ALWAYS sells great, the tragedy that was the iPhone 4 from launch last year has probably shaken consumer confidence in the iPhone brand. To what degree, I couldn't say. I think the iPhone 6, after the iPhone 5 proves no real quirks, such as antenna issues, will probably be Apple's better selling phone. Who knows, I could be wrong, but I don't think the iPhone 5 is going to cut it this year.
