AMD Products GM Rick Bergman Departs to Pursue "New Opportunity
It's way too early or late to be Spring, but change is definitely in the air. Hewlett Packard yesterday made the decision to fire Leo Apotheker as CEO and hand the reigns over to former eBay chief Meg Whitman, and now we've learned that AMD's Products Group General Manager, Rich Bergman, is leaving the chip maker to "pursue a new opportunity."
AMD President and CEO Rory Read will take over Bergman's role on an interim basis. Meanwhile, AMD also announced the hiring of Paull Struhsaker, 49, to head the company's newly-formed Commercial Business Division as the corporate vice president and general manager.
"The commercial market is vitally important for AMD and the addition of Paul to our team demonstrates our commitment to profitably grow our server business," said Read. "Paul brings an extensive business management background and customer perspective on AMD’s commercial business opportunities. I look forward to working with Paul to help drive the growth plans for this exciting part of our business.
“I want to thank Rick for his many contributions to AMD and wish him well in his future endeavors."
That little 'thank you' note was all AMD had to say about Bergman. Adding to the mystery over his departure, [H]ardOCP claims to have heard from its sources that Bergman was fired for not properly managing the GlobalFoundries relationship. Bergman is said to have applied for AMD's CEO position earlier this year.
