AMD, Intel Update CPU Roadmaps

Has there ever been a better time to be a PC enthusiast? SSDs are (slowly) creeping into the mainstream, 6-core processors are emerging, and Nvidia's Fermi architecture is nearing release. And as exciting as all that is, you don't need to spend a fortune upgrading your PC, as evidenced by updated CPU roadmaps by both Intel and AMD.

Intel is reportedly getting ready to launch its 32nm dual-core Core i5 680 processor. Priced at $284, this chip will replace the existing Core i5 670 processor. The No. 1 chip maker also plans to unveil a 45nm low-voltage Core i7 870s with an 82W TDP and priced at $560.

AMD's roadmap is a little more robust and includes everything from an entry level Sempron 145 processor to the company's upcoming flagship 6-core Phenom II X6 1035T. In between are a plethora of parts, including the single-core Athlon II 100u series, dual-core Ahtlon X2 200u series and 260, several triple-core chips, and six quad-core Phenoms.
