AMD GPU Shortage Causing Product Delays amongst PC Vendors
An ongoing shortage of AMD GPUs has forced PC vendors to delay their shipments by about two months to the first quarter of 2010, claimed a Digitimes report, citing unnamed sources at PC vendors. Both the 40nm ATI Radeon HD 5000 series and 55nm ATI Radeon HD 4000 series GPUs are said to be in short supply.
The shortage of the 40nm ATI Radeon HD 5000 series is being blamed on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's inability to keep pace with the demand due to low yields. On the other hand, the dearth of 55nm GPUs is due to the fact that they no longer figure prominently in AMD’s plans.
The report further claims that AMD has delayed the shipment of “its ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series (Manhattan) GPUs for notebooks to the first quarter of 2010 from the originally planned fourth quarter of 2009.”

I was wondering why there were no cards available. Low yields kind of scares me. With this complex a GPU, low yields means that the chips that do pass are liable to have defects that were not picked up by the semiconductor testers. I would give these cards a miss until the "bugs" are worked out. Besides, if I am going to wait anyways, I want to see what NVidia has up its sleeve.

So their race to the finish line for the release of their DX11 cards has made them unavailable to most. Isn't the same as not having one yet in the first place?
You can boast about DX11 all you want, but if your customers cannot purchase them, then you might as well not have them at all. So stupid.

Supply and demand it allows them to raise the price which they have done = maximum profit.

I have been noticing this first hand with all th 5xxx series cards. Both where I work and where I have been shopping around to keep up on prices. Nobody has them hardly, and if they do, they're on a shortage, however we seem to get them in quite regularly too...

It appears that AMDs race to get a DX11 card on the market for the windows 7 launch, and before nvidia is going to do them more harm than good. It's unfortunate, because they really needed a big win here to really stay in the game. With fermi and larabee on the horizon, and bad press from AMDs early launch, it may be a rough road ahead.

So the 5850 I ordered on Amazon won't be showing up until December/January?

I'm in the same boat. They better not cancel the order; I locked in the $259 price.

Did AMD only make three 5870s? How could they let supply problems get this bad?

I found one at FRY's. I had to go in, it's 35 mi. from my house, but Whatever. I didn't have much of a choice, cause my current GPU (an old 8800gts) died a locking, artifiact spewing death. They are surely sold out by now, as this was Last Thursday.
Now I have 5870 goodness, and LFD, TF2, and all sorts of games run BLAZINGLY fast. TY FRY'S!
