AMD Demonstrates Mobility External GPU Enclosure
As PC games continue their eternal march onward, many a laptop is left in the dust shockingly fast. What’s usually holding them back is the poor graphics solution. Even laptops with dedicated cards find themselves unable to run newer games inside of a year. A new AMD product called ATI XGP could solve all that. The AMD 5000 Series Mobility External GPU would provide the power for a real 3D gaming experience.
The new cards will require a full PCI-e pinout, which isn’t currently standard. However, the existence of MiniPCI-e means this shouldn’t be too much of a problem. The new system was demoed on an old Acer Ferrari running a Radeon X1270. The difference was quite clear. The external GPU was able to run Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. on a triple monitor system using the Eyefinity system.
The external box itself has one DVI connector, one HDMI, three display port, two USB 2.0 ports, and a 35W power adapter. No word yet on when you’ll be able to get a laptop that supports ATI XGP, but keep an eye out.

An" how-to" for building such for PC or Laptop would be nice. I would set it with
my Nas/Server. One more Toy and more to tinker with.

Too bad it defeats the purpose of having a laptop in the first place. Not very mobile.

We can hope this doesn't turn into vaporware, like the Nvidia one did. It was supposed to come with a 6600GT standard, and I believe work in via USB. The main difference though is that it actually required an external monitor.

Somthing like this would be awesome.
I could buy a laptop with a lower end gpu for battery life then get something like this so I could actually do some gaming. Next they need to have laptops that double as a secondary monitor so you can plug the external video card right back into the laptop.

Now this would be AWESOME!Especially, if its not limited to AMD, and you can swap the GPU cards at will. My only other requirement is optional HDMI ports so I could tie in two 22" monitors with a 42" HDTV mounted above them for a maximum "Wall" of nearly 50"s of screen real estate. Then I'd have a REAL media centre console for computing & gaming & Movies/TV.

Not only would this be great for laptops, but apply it to ALL PCs and you have an awesome platform for graphics. This means your grandma's computer can finally play Crysis!
It's not limited to games, of course. The CPU+GPU world is imminent... which means everyone will want a decent GPU in the next few years. Sure, integrated graphics are getting better, but they can't possibly compare to a solution like the above.

Here's an idea, make a standard connection for laptops so the gpu can be easily upgraded.

The problem with laptop GPUs is not just that. A good one is very expensive, about $700. Also, they need to be smaller card to fit inside a laptop and have lower thermal requirements and power consumption.

This has been tried a number of times. Even XGP has even been advertised on MaximumPC some month ago. Why can't this take a foothold?
You can have your recession. I'm not participating.
