AMD Asks: What Would You Do with 48 Cores?
It’s a pretty good question, and we really don’t have a ton of ideas. There might not be a lot of real world use cases for a 48-core setup, but maybe you could come up with a few if the price was right. Like for instance, if AMD would give you those 48 cores if you came up with a good one. Well, that’s just what they’re doing.
AMD wants people to submit essays, videos, or blog posts explaining how they’d use a monster 48 core server to “make the world a better, more interesting place”. The contest is seemingly meant to promote the upcoming Magny-Cours based Opteron CPUs AMD will be releasing this quarter. If you can come up with the best idea, AMD will provide you with four new AMD Opteron 6174 12-core CPUs, a TYAN S8812 motherboard, and a copy of Windows Server 2008.
So what'll it be? Super powered Folding@home box to cure cancer? Rendering farm for underprivileged, inner-city video producers? Check out the full rules here before you formulate any plans. Anyone planning on submitting an entry? Drop us a line if you win…

The product is solid. This is a more than worthy upgrade. A simple training process and access to a wide variety of standard audio formats mean that you’ll be moving your spoken text to the printed page in a matter of minutes and with a minimum of hassle. free business advertising

The only reason to have this many cores is for a server. Would not do a wit of difference in a PC. The best idea would be to virtualize many computers to have inexpensive terminals for a school or library.

I would use it to accelerate Itunes. 48Cores is just plain cool. I would love to have a laptop with 48cores. Just to show off.

I don't suppose "Use it to help Intel design faster multi-core procs" would garner much of a vote. Truthfully, I don't think there is anything I normally do that would benefit from 48 cores. Although, it would be a blast to overclock that many--just for the street cred.

Play Crysis?
Seriously, that's a lot of power for even an enthusiast to have. I can't even begin to imagine what I would do with it....Well, except making smart comments while thinking about it.
