Amazon Outage Costs the Company Big Bucks
If you tried to purchase an item from Amazon yesterday afternoon but couldn't, you're not alone. The popular e-tailer suffered an outage yesterday that lasted for several hours.
"We are currently experiencing an issue that is impacting customers' ability to place orders on the Amazon.com website," Amazon announced in a blog post yesterday at 12:47 PM PDT.
A follow-up post one hour later indicated the site was still having problems, and it wasn't until 8:45 PM PDT that another message said the issue had been resolved.
The inability to place orders for that long is a significant SNAFU, one that potentially costs the company a ton of money. With an annual revenue of almost $27 billion, the e-tailer pulls in about $51,400 per minute.

I'm Impatient....I don't buy from Amazon because it is where I go to get stuff...I buy from Amazon because it is available when I'm looking for it.

Why do you think this cost them so much? Most people are not so impatient that they can't wait till the next day to place an order.
Even if every person that would have placed an order gave up in that short a period of time, it would only amount to a $24,569,200 loss (according to your $51,400 per minute figure). I'd bet 90% of people tried again today.

If you can't get what you want from one store, do you turn around and go home, or go to another store? I'm sure a large portion of people waited, but for those who couldn't it was a lost sale.

Isn't everyone who writes about 'the cloud' always make it seem like it's the answer to everything?
