Amazon Officially Announces Large-Screen Kindle DX
As expected, Amazon today officially unveiled its large-screen Kindle eBook reader, the Kindle DX, making the announcement in a lecture hall at the downtown Pace University. Speculation and rumors preceded the announcement, none of which matters anymore now that Amazon has put up a product page. Some pertinent specs for the new DX revision:
- 9.7-inch display with 16 shades of gray
- Hold up to 3,500 books, periodicals, and documents
- Slim form factor measuring just over 1/3 of an inch
- Auto rotating screen
- Much anticipated built-in PDF reader
- Wireless 3G
The new kindle measures 10.4 x 7.2 x 0.38 inches, whereas the original measured 8 x 3.5 x 0.36 inches. It also costs a little over a $100 more than the original, part of which goes toward the added storage capacity.
You can pre-order the Kindle DX now for $489 with free shipping through Amazon.com.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand the Kindle? 500 bucks so you can carry a bunch of books around? Do you read more than 1 book at a time? Does your book really weigh that much? Does your book's battery die ever?
If you want to argue that it is good for college students, they already carry around a laptop. Release the book in generic pdf format. Another good format for the everyman, books on tape and whatever mp3 player you happen to be carrying. I'm lost at the awe everyone is in over these things.

The price is on par with the iTab :, although an iTab with service will probably cost around $799.
For $500 though and $10 bucks for almost every book is crazy. Who has time to read, iPod plus all the hours of free podcasts and once in awhile audible.com is all I could ever ask for when at work.
You know this is in response to something with a 10 inch screen.
