Amazon May be Planning to Open Brick and Mortar Stores
Sales tax aside, how cool would it be to pick up your Amazon.com order locally instead of waiting for your items to ship? According to recent rumors, that's a very real possibility, provided you reside in the U.K.
The Times Online in London says Amazon "has launched a secret search for brick-and-mortar stores to support its rapidly growing website." The online mega chain is said to be searching for high-profile locales while the Borders book chain is shuttering its doors.
"When Amazon was just selling books and CDs that fitted easily through the letterbox it was fine to be a web-only business, but now it has branched out into everything from children's bikes to electricals it believes it could boost sales by having stores that offer a collection point for shoppers. It will probably be an Argos-sytle operation," said a source familiar with Amazon's proposals.
It sounds risky to move from the web to the street, but if anyone can pull it off, it would be Amazon. During the credit crunch, Amazon defied Wall Street forecasts with a 28 percent surge in sales to $5.5 billion. The company's value has never been higher, including during the dotcom era.
Naturally, Amazon had no comment on the rumor.

Yeah, I'm not too big of a fan of paying taxes from an online-retail store. However, I understand that the government needs money to pay back its massive 11 trillion dollar debt, that they've so gracefully put us into.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if they opened stores in, say, California, wouldn't all Californians then have to pay sales tax on all Amazon.com orders as well? That would definitely make me think twice and start comparison shopping whereas now it's a no-brainer and I just buy off Amazon without a second thought.

As for paying sales tax, I believe in some states people are already paying it for items on Amazon.

It all depends on your state - weather or not you pay state sales taxes. I could be wrong, but I believe New Yorkers have to pay a sales tax regardless of weather or not there is a brick and mortar version in New York. (Someone from NY, please correct me if I'm wrong.)
I know for my state (Florida) there is no sales tax unless the e-tailolr also has a physical store in Florida. Then there is a 7.5% Florida Sales Tax! So...if Amazon decides to open up a store in Florida - I'll just take my business elsewhere.
