You make it sound like Amazon just random picks out what to send you. When in fact used items are clearly defined as being used! And it's rather nice to have that option has I was able to order a few books and movies that were no longer in print. Ebay was killed when all the individual sellers left, and all you had was storefronts over charging, penny auctions with 5000% shipping cost...

As far as the interface, I never have a problem finding anything I'm looking for, and find prices to be better than what I see in the local stores. Can't say the same about Newegg who has changed their UI so much in the last few years that it's hard to find anything, and prices are no better than I can find locally, and that Eggsaver shipping...

Zoander, are you sure it wasn't a Phishing site?

@Zoander- while I agree with you completely about Amazon's QOS- that has to be one of the most off topic posts I've seen in awhile! And no, you didn't break anything, Amazon was/has been rolling out a new look, but have since experienced a glitch ot 2 and have switched back.

At any rate, I would agree that a tablet announcement is exactly what is coming forth. They need this tablet to work well for them at the $250 price point- it is simply amazing how they are attacking Apple on several different levels in the last few months alone. For good reason as well, with states starting to push for sales tax- that could mean trouble for their bread and butter online business.

A solid 7" at $249 and a 10" at $399 (subsidized by app sales I presume) would be an extremely attractive deal.

Also, to the folks at MaxPC- I don't know if you guy's realize it or not, but the comments field does not work properly under IE9 without going into compatability mode- which is a total pain in the ass.

A little online research yielded this - Amazon.com was named after the Amazon River, one of the largest rivers in the world. The secondary definition of the word "river" in an online dictionary said " a large quantity of a flowing substance".

I find the name rather fitting, considering there is very little one cannot find on the store's website. I agree their site could be improved in several ways. And I saw something odd the other day which may indicate they are working on a new site. I was shopping from a Windows XP computer and their site looked entirely different from what I am used to seeing. Indeed much 'cleaner' and streamlined. But when I later returned to their site on a Windows 7 PC to make the purchase, the original site was back. Since that time I have shopped there on that same WinXP PC and see only the original site. Had I accidentally stumbled onto a prototype site that wasn't supposed to be accessible yet? Time will tell I guess.

I for one find their service impeccable, so long as I stay with the 'fulfilled by Amazon' items. It is when dealing with other vendors who use their store front, but who ship the items themselves, that I have sometimes seen problems. So I prefer to avoid that if at all possible. They do have a point system similar to eBay for checking out the reliability of their associate vendors.

Amazon has become my first place to shop online, and rarely do they not have what I am looking for. Not always the best price, but I would say more often than not, at least from my experience with them.

You did stumble onto their new UI, it just wasn't an accident. They are rolling out and testing a new UI that is to be easier for tablets users, according to WSJ.

Maybe its to announce they have finally come to their senses and decided to name the company something that has to do with the business they're in rather than a random proper noun.

Perhaps it is to announce they will be come a legitimate business and stop selling used items alongside new.

Another possibility is that they are launching a decent website rather than the cluttered, ugly, 1999 looking thing they currently have.

I seem to be the only person on earth who doesn't like Amazon. No I'm not a disgruntled former employee or anything like that. I just truly don't get what it is that people see in this strange company. Their prices are noting special. Neither is their selection, really. They have a terrible site. They sell used stuff. They have a name that makes no sense. And now, to top it all off, they're making a tablet specifically designed to sell you more of their stuff. And for some reason, people are all jazzed  up about it! I just don't get it.

Meh, I'm completely ambivalent about Amazon. The only time I shop there is if they have something I can't get anywhere else (which is exceedingly rare). Since I'm in NY I have to pay sales tax, and often shipping as well, so I very rarely save anything compared to buying an item locally and is almost always more than I'd pay at any number of sites that don't charge me sales tax and have free shipping (for example, Newegg).

But there is one thing that keeps me going back to their site every single day -- the free Android app of the day.

I totally agree with paragraphs 1 and 3.  I don't care what cheap excuse for an "analogy" a business uses for names like that.  Please keep your names of businesses relevant to the business, it's history or the proprietors.  It starts taking meaning out of words and they lose significance over time.  Devolution of the English language is out of control.  Take the name of O.S. builds that Google uses for mobile.  Honeycomb, Strawberry Shortcake, Ice Cream Sundae... I mean, come on.

If I had a six figure+ income at my disposal I would agree with the used item issue.  But since that's not the case, it's convenient that I can easily get something used if "needed", but just don't have it in my budget that particular month for a brand new item.  But I agree that it does "cheapen" a business a lot.

Their G.U.I. is tacky looking no doubt and it's quite cluttered and disorganized.  Amazon really does need to invest in the design department and give it some modernization.

Personally I think that their selection is very good.  I usually find almost everything I could want from an internet order when buying online.  After dealing with various online vendors in the past I've found their customer service second to none.  Customer service keeps me coming back to Amazon.

I'm hoping that their announcement is that they are going to hire more workers to ease the excessive production quotas on their employees, pay them $21.00/hr., guarantee 40 hr. work weeks and give them free medical and dental insurance. :))

"Neither is their selection, really." = Lie

Books I've found on Amazon were never available at my local Borders, or other bookstores, large or small.  Nor were easily accessible reviews of the title, by pros and ordinary readers, directly available on the other sites I used to visit.  That was years ago, and now the booksellers copying the website are vastly behind in trying to drum up a reviewing public to match the Amazon customer base.

I suspect the name was a ploy to get to the top of alphabetical listings of top rated web sites in pre-Google times.

Used books sometimes save me money, and other times let me acquire books that are currently out of print.  They deliver value I couldn't otherwise acquire.  Why anyone would sneer at buying a gently used book I can't figure out.

As for their tablet, I'm skeptical it will actually live up to the dreams of the public and out-bling the Ipad, but until it's released for review by third parties, we won't know.

There is nothing at all wrong with buying or selling used stuff. But I do that on ebay. If I walk into a store I expect to find new merchandise. Selling used stuff along with new stuff makes the place feel like a flea market rather than a legitimate retailer. It makes me uneasy about buying anything from them. This combined with their complicated, cluttered interface are the main reasons I don't shop there.
