Really? If we scale back the size of government you really think we’d let kids work in mines, in sweat shops, or around heavy machinery? Nonsense.

I didn't say moving completely to “non-regulated” anything, was the answer. However I will say this: the real problem today IS over regulation. The major cause of that is that regulations and laws and ENTIRE DEPARTMENTS of the government that stick around LONG after they serve a purpose.

If you don't like a product or service, or the companies that provide them, don't buy/use them. It really is that simple. If enough people agree with you then the market share for that business will shrink to the point that they can no longer be profitable – no matter where they are based or how many people they have to let go.

Unfortunately, that’s not good enough for the “big government is here to help you” crowd. You want the government to do what you can’t - because the reality is that there AREN'T enough people that agree with you. So you want the government to legislate and regulate them out of business because YOU don’t like they way they do business. Yeah, that DOESN'T go against any of the fundamental principles of the United States of America. Yet you say that it’s WE who should move or secede. How’s that?

You do realize that elements of transit infrastructure that you mentioned are private and that, again, the corporations that run them already pay their taxes and fees for "security", and that if you want to maintain that this is incorrect and that sales tax on online items will pay for this "security" that you will have to provide up-to-date evidence to support this claim?

BTW, it is impossible to "make up facts". There's also no such thing as an "actual fact", if it isn't true than it isn't a fact, there's no need for the "actual" in there. Your article is outdated and does not corroborate the claims you maintain that it does.

Well, since you can't see reason at least you're being civil confining yourself with a bulk of your disillusioned peers in CA. If only there were a place where people who do not wish to take part in your delusions could go, but there does not seem to be such a place in the 50 states, thanks to people who share your delusions but who are malicious and have decided to force their ideas upon other states.

It's called democracy, and my only suggestion to people such as yourselves who claim that the majority of the country is delusional, is to move or secede. You're attacking the fundamentals of the democratic system and resorting to insults. It's precisely that kind of attitude that makes civil discourse in this country so impossible. Goodnight, my fellow American.

Interesting. A little “Love it or leave it” kinda thing there huh?

Since you feel that someone who disagrees with the fundamentals of OUR system should leave the country, I’d suggest that you send off an e-mail to the principle architect of the biggest FUNDAMENTAL changes to OUR system in my lifetime. Someone who, in his own words, believes in “…fundamentally transforming the United States of America.” Maybe we’ll get lucky and he’ll take the rest of his “big government is the answer” twits with him. Here, I’ll start it for you:

Dear Mr. President;

Wait now you're complaining the percentage of how much is going to roads. You mean amazon doesn't use other state government services besides roads? And FYI sales taxes fund police, firefighters,DMV,public transportation. You know 21 century stuff.

avatar

That article has a graph (from 2009!) showing that only 3% of sales tax collected is earmarked for transportation. So the poster's point appears to stand.

Strangelove_424

You're looking at the paper's county graph, not the state's. The numbers given in cents per dollar indicate the state's budget and "it goes to anything but roads and infrastructure" is misleading when some of the few things it is specifically earmarked for relate to roads and infrastructure.

avatar

Carlidan

Even with that small percentage. It's a lot of money. We are talking about millions of dollars for roads.

I'm already paying for "public roads and state infrastructure" through my existing (and excessively high) tax burden.

The taxes levied upon UPS and FedEx by the Powers that Be go towards paying for "public roads and state infrastructure".

Between the taxes on the delivery companies and customers like me and you we've already got this covered. No additional (expensive) sales tax collection with severe ramifications needed.

"No additional (expensive) sales tax collection with severe ramifications needed."

That's the point though... If you are buying from the internet w/o any sort of sales tax whatsoever, this tax is not "additional", it's just called sales tax. The only people threatening "severe ramifications" are corporations who want to keep a direct tax-free sales connection between Chinese factories and my front door. Almost every country except for the United States controls their import/export balance with VAT and import tariffs. We, on the other hand, have given corporations a tax-free place to hock their slave-made goods.

I don't buy many, rarely any, goods that are made in China online and have them shipped to me so I'd like to be exempted from this tax tomfoolery. ;)

I'm not sure that anyone is "threatening" ramifications here, they're simply stating what will happen once certain unfortunate choices are made by the government regarding taxation.

You are already required to pay use tax on internet and out-of-state purchases, although it doesn't seem that most folks do so. This is something different because it targets Amazon specifically.
