All Bow Down Before the Mighty 16GB FB-DIMM!
Elpida Memory, Inc. based in Japan announced that it is going to launch a 16-gigabyte Fully Buffered DIMM (FB-DIMM), the world's largest capacity. It is based on its own unique integrated packaging technology (stacked FBGA or sFBGA) with 2-gigabit DDR2 SDRAM. Elpida has achieved development of FB-DIMM products that feature an ultra thin thickness of 7.7mm.
The chip was designed with the ultra high-end servers and workstation market in mind.
Sample shipments of the new 16-gigabyte FB-DIMM will begin later this month. Mass production is expected to get underway in the 4Q of 2008.
Now if they would just come up with 8 Gig DDR3 sticks for my next desktop build, I’d be very happy indeed!

Well if only mainstream motherboards supported 64GBs of DDR3. OVERKILL! Does even Vista 64 support that much RAM?

A 64-bit OS in theory can address up to 128Gb of RAM
Vista claims:
Home Basic: 8GB
Home Premium: 16GB
Utimate: 128GB
Business: 128GB

I'd actually be satisfied with 4 GB DDR3 modules. I've been planning to go from my Opteron 185 system to a new Nehalem-based build sometime next year. After reading Maximum PC's excellent writeup about building a Nehalem PC, I realized that I will almost certainly want to use three DIMMs, and 12 GB should be a solid starting point for a Vista 64 PC to last me a good 3-4 years. I just hope the DDR3 prices drop significantly over the next 8-12 months. 12 GB of DDR3 at today's prices would be around $750. :(
