Age of Conan Developer Cuts 20% of Workforce, Delays Next MMO

Funcom’s quite used to cutting things. After all, Conan and his loin-clothed cohorts typically sport more pointy weaponry than clothing. Even so, we can’t imagine the developer’s recent announcement that it’s axing jobs right and left was an easy one to make.

“Funcom N.V has initiated a program of cost reductions, reductions in head count and use of forced leave (permittering) to better align the Company's operations to the current marketplace. Around 20 % of the staff of the Company will be affected by headcount reductions or forced leave, mostly in the Company's Norwegian subsidiary,” read the announcement.

In addition, the developer’s next massively multiplayer opus, The Secret World, will remain a secret for a little while longer, as its development has been “extended some months.”

Best of luck to all those affected by the lay-offs. We hear those MMO-majiggers are all the rage with the kids these days, so hopefully, you’ll be back on your feet in no time.

avatarpoor AoC.  They should just

poor AoC.  They should just pull the plug now.  I played AoC for a year, and was very successful ingame with the Black Hand guild.  However, the game sadly became redundant and worthless.  Too bad, the game really had potential, but Funcom lost sight of both the customer and the product.

avatarFuncom made many promises

Funcom made many promises about AoC that it simply wasn't able to deliver.  Despite their claims to the contrary, the world they created was bland far less savage than the one created by Howard.  The game started out with a "mature" rating and gradually slipped ever closer to the "teen" rating, presumably in an attempt to increase its audience.  It seems to have had the opposite effect.  I cancelled my sub (pre-ordered collector's edition, no less) a couple months ago and I don't miss it yet.  It was a great idea, poorly executed.

Maybe they should stop focusing on MMO crap and start on the Dreamfall sequel.
