Intel's vision of a perfect world is one in which Ultrabooks never breach the $1,000 mark. Actually, Intel's utopia involves ARM and AMD running off together and leaving the microprocessor market behind, as unrealistic as that might sound. What's not unrealistic is the idea of sub-$1,000 Ultrabooks, and Acer is proving as much with its $899 Aspire S.
Acer will become the first vendor to offer an Ultrabook below $1,000 when the Aspire S launches later this month, according to a report in CRN. More importantly for Intel (and fans of the Ultrabook concept in general), the $899 price tag could spark a price war and put the pressure on competitors to follow its lead.
"The low price sends a clear signal that Acer intends to compete with Asus for the opening price point," Deron Kershaw, a notebook analyst at Gap Intelligence, told CRN.
Acer's even undercutting its own price tag by selling the Aspire S in the U.S. for $200 less than what it's going for in Europe. There are different configurations available, but the one most likely to hit the $899 price point is the 13.3-inch Aspire S3 with an Intel Core i5 2467M processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory, and a 320GB hard drive.

I will then happily replace my rooted Nook Color and work laptop for an ultra mobile device.

I'm not too sure how well "ultra-books" are gonna do....tablet sales are growing and everyone of my friends thought I was "stupid for spending THAT much on a laptop"......I paid $700 for a refurb 17" HP DV7 back in 2009....and I still use it.
Even though it's way more powerful than all of their PC's(and it barely runs StarCraft 2....so think about that...) they don't understand why anyone would pay more than $400 on a computer.....and guess what THAT'S the MAJORITY of people.
