Acer Backs Out of e-Reader Market

What’s the old song: “you put your left foot in, you pull your left foot out”? Same holds true for Acer it seems, but instead of a left foot it’s an e-Reader that Acer put in and has now taken out.
About a month ago Acer announced plans for an e-Reader, which would debut about mid-year. Now it seems Acer’s had a change of heart and has decided an e-Reader is a no-go for it. Acer Chairman Wang Jeng-tang told reporters that Acer is still considering the possibilities, but as the e-Reader market isn’t that big it doesn’t make sense for Acer to step in at this time.
It may be a small market, but perhaps Acer’s decision to pull its e-Reader out may have been influenced by a steady stream of product announcements--including Apple’s iPad. What was a market ripe for entry, with only Amazon’s Kindle offering any serious challenge, rapidly became crowded and intensely competitive. With the bar now higher, perhaps discretion is playing a greater role in Acer’s decision than market size.

The "me too" market can be hazardous to a company's health. Lots of companies that diversified too much have had loads of trouble over the past 20 years. HP is good example. It had medical, test and measurement, semiconductor, hard drives, service and support and of course mainframe computers. All gone now except for service and support and servers in that list. If they just had not bought Compac....
