1. the color palette, really that's hilarious.
2. Slide to unlock? you mean the slide-to-unlock patent apple had before Android was even a commerical OS. So cause they changed the direction its coping android, when it was already implemented. Considering Android is a wholesale theft of iOS, that's splitting hairs for sure. weaksauce.
3. Real-time app previews? seriously have you guys even hear of Mac OS, Mission Control has been around for years before any smartphone had it. please.
4. Control Center looks nothing like the kids blox layout of Android, while the iOS version is more elegant. Android lacks music player controls, airplay, and airdrop something Android has never had or will.
5. omg who cares, how many companies use pinch and zoom that iOS invented/patented for smartphones. Stolen and Android apologists whine like "well what else were we going to use". Yet they say Apple stole gestures. please
6. Yet again, have you guys even used OSX? Coverflow has been around for years before any smartphone ripped it. Even windows 7 finally got a coverflow knockoff.

Actually four is incorrect, Especially on one point. All three of my Android Smartphones have had music controls and two of them had something similar to airdrop and airplay, The same ideal and basically worked the same way anyways. And Androids swipe in any direction lock came WAY before Apple included it into their iPhones. So if anything Apple stole that from Android.

Oh, And before you try to argue with me don't even go there. I have owned many Android devices, Smartphones to tablets, As well as many Apple devices from iPods to iPhones, And have upgraded from an Android to an iPhone 5s, Which I am in love with. And I like both companies, Because one will always do a feature better than the other, They are never identical, As to which one will be leading in that feature at the moment one will not know until it is done. Also Apple makes more than Android so I don't see why Apple-lovers are worried, Even Apple doesn't give a shit, Some of the people FROM apple told me that.

Oh and, Not choosing sides but if one company does it better than the other than who gives a flying shit who came out with it. If it's good get it and don't worry about who did this and who made that and who came up with it, What brand it is ect.

necro thread is necro. Im not sure why you created an account just to respond to this thread. Perhaps you thought no one would notice your troll comment from an article over a month old?

avatar

rhetoric.assass...

other than trolling yourself. I didnt have to create an account, I signed in to my facebook account. Everyone has to post at sometime to get the ball rolling, so does that make everyone a troll that comments for the this time, by that logic you are a troll as well. And wow, what seniority you have, you have been on this site 18 weeks yourself. Way to go.

I like how you detracted from my points by bringing up trolling since you have no evidence to refute what I say. Typical loser strategy, just make an asinine comment that has nothing to do with comments that are commenting on the FUD that this article clearly displays. But please oh holy thou INTERNETS MODERATOR please continue on your off-topic rant since you have nothing relevant to say.

avatar

Hey.That_Dude

Yeah. If you want someone with (obvious) seniority to talk to (Since I'm sure Mac's had like three profiles)...

I'd have to agree that it's a little trollish to post to an article well over a month after the debate has stopped. It is true that this is a flame article and that flame opinions are to be expected, but don't dredge up an article from the dead just to beat it with a stick (think dead horse metaphor).

avatar

The Mac

Yeah, i had one previous profile (blkpanthr) that the admin accidentally wiped when they were erasing spam.

What Apple fanboys will say:
OMG!! look at all these new features Apple Invented!! They are so Innovative!! If not for Apple, nothing would ever be created!! Everyone is so jealous of Apple!

What the rest of the World will say:
Dam, look at Apple Stealing ideas again! Can't they invent anything on there own?

Apple, invents nothing while it users claim it invents everything.

Crackalackin

I TAKE MY FAVORITE PHONE SERIOUSLY AND HATE COMPANIES THAT MAKE OTHER PHONES. MY PHONE IS MY IDENTITY, AND I BASE MY ENTIRE EXISTENCE NOT ONLY ON MY COMMUNICATIONS DEVICE BUT ALSO ON MY ABILITY TO PROVE MINOR FEATURES OF OTHER PHONES WERE THOUGHT OF FIRST BY THE COMPANY THAT MAKES MY PHONE. I FEEL SMUG, SUPERIOR, AND AM THE INTELLECTUAL BETTER OF THOSE THAT HAVE LESSER PHONES.

avatar

Hey.That_Dude

Where's the mute button.
I'd agree with you if there weren't any software patents on any of these "ideas". The fact that you can patent "slide to unlock" is beyond retarded.
BUT, since we live in a world where software patents do exist and coping simple ideas is considered "anti-competitive" instead of "common sense" this article is a a fine example of just how much mirroring is embedded in the human psychology.

avatar

Crackalackin

What do you care about software patents and anti-competitive practices?

I'll never understand why people get emotionally involved in things they have absolutely no control over. Ford vs Chevrolet...iOS vs Android vs Windows...Facebook vs Google+...Apple vs Microsoft...Democrat vs Republican. It's inane.

I don't get why something like this gets any more than a passing thought.

avatar

Hey.That_Dude

Nice to know you have no opinion. Keep your lack of opinion to yourself. This article is written about opinions.

avatar

Crackalackin

I have an opinion, it's that people get worked up over frivolous things. Sorry if that offends you or strikes a nerve.

avatar

MaximumMike

So, what's more frivolous- getting worked up over something you're passionate about or getting worked up over the fact that other people are passionate?

avatar

Crackalackin

I would say being passionate about the shape of the icons on a smartphone screen and screeching "the company I like thought of it first" is pretty bad, but that's just me.

avatar

MaximumMike

I would say that having 5 posts on a thread, where you are basically arguing that people who have an opinion on a particular news article are wasting their time, is pretty much a bigger waste of time.

avatar

Crackalackin

I sure am glad we got that all worked out then.

avatar

The Mac

+1

avatar

Hey.That_Dude

Yes they do. This is obvious a flame article. Therefore the comments sections is obviously a fighting rink.

avatar

Crackalackin

I said nothing about the article. Please try to keep up.

avatar

Renegade Knight

Where's the like button?

avatar

Too bad someone didn't patent the flat look interface, then they could give it back to apple in the courts so they could see how silly it is.

avatar

elias21

Apple you have been broken you are know any dessert android can make with appples.

avatar

The Mac

Apple Pie - could be right after Key Lime Pie.
Apple Cobler
Baked Apple
Apple Tart
Apple Compote

avatar

pcguy94

None of those names can happen because the naming scheme is in alphabetical order. The next release has to start with a K. The release after that starts with an L etc...

Name history:
Cupcake (1.5)
Doughnut (1.6)
Eclair (2.0-2.1)
Froyo (2.2.x)
Gingerbread (2.3.x)
Honeycomb (3.x)
Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.x)
Jellybean (4.1-4.2)

avatar

The Mac

Key Lime Pie the the next.

so L,

Luscious Apple Tart?

lol

but, unfortunatley is will most likely be something with Lemon.

avatar

PiEGuY

I would try to avoid calling my product anything that includes “lemon”. How about licorice?

avatar

The Mac

Perhaps, there arent that many L deserts/sweets around.

lollipop maybe?

Oh God.....WHO CARES!?!?! Use whatever phucking phone you want, and whatever interface it has, and STFU! All this wasted time bickering on who invented what and who's suing who has taken away from simply having a Smart Phone and using whatever features about it you like and enjoying that phone. I'm no fanboy of ANY OS or Company, but I have an iPhone 4, that I got for free, and it is my first and only Smart Phone so far, but I couldn't care LESS if it does this thingy or that thingy or DOESN'T do this thingy or that thingy! SO WHAT!!! It does what I need, and that's fine by me. If you wanna compare your SuperFantasticBadAss Android Phone to my iPhone and say how bad my phone is and how much I must hate this or that, go for it......you won't make me get all scared and have to change because of something you like. Sheesh. What a joke.

avatar

Hey.That_Dude

Well, technically, this falls more under "Software News."
a better series would be:

>Goes on PC website
>Complains about Smartphones

avatar

Exarkun1138

Not complaining about the review, but rather the comments thereafter.

avatar

Hey.That_Dude

Really? I read this article and knew there was going to be a flame war underneath. So I joined in where i felt i could have the most fun flaming.

If anything, Control Center is a copy of SB Settings. Anyone who has jailbroke their iPhone in the last 4 years can tell you that SB Settings is exactly like Control Center, just from the top instead of the bottom. I don't know how long Android has had this similar feature, but it's been a staple on jailbroken iPhones for quite some time.

avatar

Xenite

Apple has never been an innovator, they take existing ideas, polish them up and market the shit out of them. It's what they excel at, convincing hipsters to shell out cash.

At least people are starting to finally wise up as iOS devices are on a steep decline while android is cleaning their clock in sales.

avatar

Renegade Knight

That polish actually is innovation. It's not inventing the mouse trap but it is inventing a better mouse trap.

avatar

Hey.That_Dude

Or you can think about the "Polish" as more of a gilding process. Makes it look more impressive and then charges you more for it, even though no NEW functionality was given (from an overall standpoint, not from a specific OS stand point).

avatar

draconis123

How about also mentioning Blackberry OS 10 from which iOS 7 is very similar to.

avatar

Damnlogin

BB10 is also very similiar to Nokia's Swipe UI on the Nokia N9. The music player also looks like the N9's music player.

avatar

Lifeisgiod416

"Apple has now changed its lock screen from their traditional horizontal-line unlock to an unlock screen that opens by swiping up in any direction."

Based on my experience with iOS 7 swipe to unlock still works like before, the gesture is exactly the same. The only difference is that the gesture to unlock now works on any part of the screen. Swiping up will only give you access to the new control center.

avatar

Mr_Histamine

Come on MaxPC...the "swipe up anywhere to unlock" has been around since the Zune HD (and, by association, WP7). I'm sure someone there has to have owned one... You also could have added a bit more "meat" to this article. A few of the screenshots of the various functions on the official OS7 page, look exactly like WP (with rounded corners on most of the elements).

Still, I like what they've done so far. They've corralled the look into something that looks considerably more uniform when moving throughout the interface (even if different pieces of it have been lifted from their competitors).

I'm also glad to see Android and iOS moving to a flatter design language. That means they'll start focusing on how to expose a user to more pertinent data, quickly, without wasting processing time on goofy gimmicks.

avatar

chriszele

The Mac is correct the HTC Hero came out before the Zune HD, as it was released in July 2009 and the Zune was released in September 2009.

avatar

Mr_Histamine

I stand corrected.

That two month difference is surprisingly close. I still prefer the Zune's version though. :)

avatar

TheMissingPiece

Awwwww yeah ZuneHD! Hard to believe that I'm still using the great grandaddy of the modern slide to unlock. XD

avatar

The Mac

My HTC Hero had it, came out about the same time.

avatar

Danthrax66

I think I had an HTC android phone with swipe up to unlock before the zune hd came out but I could be wrong.

Control Centre is a welcome addition to iOS devices. Not that anyone broke their fingers but it was a lot of crap to go through (drilling down through settings and sub-settings) to turn off wifi and other common tasks that were accomplished by mechanical hardware switches/buttons not so long ago. Android has had this right for some time and that's a big blow for a company who prides itself in "ease of use" as Apple does.

I don't personally see the value in the Real Time App Previews though. Hopefully older hardware won't take a performance hit for such bloat (my opinion that it's bloat,) Any model of smartphone should last a consumber *at least* two years. In iOS-World that should mean that someone who buys a 4S new now (because they are still selling them) should not have to suffer some laggy-assed experience because the OS was "upgraded" but only tested on the latest hardware. Apple may be better about this than some companies but they are still far from perfect. (Especially when it comes to underpowered iPod Touches which cost more than many people's smartphones.)

avatar

Bizarre

It's too bad no apple fans will see this list.

avatar

zorak

Am I surprized? Nope.

avatar

warlok180

Wow. Really? Not to defend Apple and their policies but I don't see how this is any different than Android and Windows Phone copying iOS from the start.

If anything, this is a good thing that it forces Apple to adapt and help keep everybody innovating for a better experience for us consumers.

Bottom line: they're all copying each other and suing each other!

avatar

sickley

The issue is that Apple makes some of the most asinine patents, they act like they invented certain shapes and then pull out massive lawsuits when someone does something that they don't like.

The difference between MS/Google/Palm/etc. and Apple is that they aren't afraid of their competition copying them. Worse yet Apple also has the need to be afraid of their users finding out that they aren't in fact innovators, that they actually base all their ideas off of other ideas (as does everyone) because then they would lose a lot of customers.

As everyone will uncountably tell you, the issue is Apple's hypocrisy, and dishonest business model.
