Acually, Verizon does give you breaks when you renew your contract and upgrade your phone. I have been doing it for 10 years. New every 2 program is great and it works out perfectly. After every deployment, I get a new phone:)

I got the Palm Pre on Saturday. Coming from an iPhone 1G, it is so nice to be able to multitask seamlessly and have unobtrusive notifications. Most of the added features in firmware 3.0 and the 3GS seem specifically targeted at competiting with the Pre and Android, but the fact is the notification scheme sucks, and having to go back to the home screen to switch apps sucks. The Pre certainly isn't perfect, but the flaws it has will be fixed in updates, and even right now I have had no deisre to go back to my old iPhone. For those who compain that the Pre is on Sprint, who has such bad coverage and customer service, I have to say that I have not experieced that at all. My signal is consistently higher than on T-mobile, calls are way clearer, and I haven't had any drop, EVDO data is extremly fast, to the point that it almost seems like Wi-Fi. The customer service I have had buying my Pre at the Sprint Store, and over the phone to check on a few things has been to notch on both occasions.

Competition is good.  I hope the Pre does well.

I love my blackberry storm.  Mostly cuz it has more than one button!  And a better camera, already takes video, don't need to use Itunes to get music/movies on it, cheap unlimited email and internet, great battery life,...

Everyone has an iPhone now, I look cool cuz the Storm stands out =D

iphone is no doubt the best phone around. there 15,000+ apps for it and is the first of its kind. so with out the iphone every touch phone you have wouldnt be. that is the only thing the mac is good for thou, everyhting else sucks. i might get one soon since my prof writes apps so we can study on them, but $90 dollars a month is alot for a iphone.

Wait, wait, wait wait... So you think that if Apple had not come out with the iPhone, touch interface phones would not exist? I think not. Heck, Apple didn't even invent touch intrefaces at all!

In 1974, the first true touch screen incorporating a
transparent surface came on
the scene developed by Sam Hurst and Elographics. In 1977,
Elographics developed and patented five-wire resistive technology, the
most popular touch screen technology in use today. On February 24, 1994,
the company officially changed its name from Elographics to Elo TouchSystems.

There are touchscreen smart phones (or smart devices) that date back to 1992. Well before Apple even THOUGHT about the iphone or all of this iCrap. Maybe do a little research before you start. Apple played with an unreleased touch interface deskphone back in '83, but that was a concept, not production. And don't go spinning that in to "See! It's all 'cause of Apple that we have touch anything!1111"

I'll take my Windows PC and my HTC Dream (G1 Android) over an Apple iCrap product any day!

I am also using a Sprint Touch Pro, which I dearly love along with Windows Mobile, flashed to MetroPCS.  You can scoff if you want but I don't have problems with it, never have.  It runs great, never drops calls, and I only pay $56 a month for unlimited everything.  Sure the internet isn't fast, but its fast enough to check the movie listings while I am out and about, and get my email which is about all I have need of the internet on my phone for.

So, I LOL at AT&T, Apple, and most of all the suckers they take for a ride every month.

avatar

gatorXXX

I have a Sprint touch Pro and it does so much more than the Iphone could ever achieve. This phone here is just another way for AT&T and Crapple to make you spend more money so the CEO's can take longer and better vacations.

im glad i never fell into this iphone crap. i read about what they discussed at this event and its like ok, you guys are going nuts over crap thats been out and standard for years? my old black jack does most of this stuff, cmon now. not to mention their lame price drop on some of their macs...psh, still way more expensive than a comparable windows machine.

whatev, apple and apple nuts can continue to suck it

I guess I learned something new. I thought the iPhone was supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. The only features my Blackberry doesn't have that were discussed in this article are the 3.0mp camera (mine's 1.8) and the forward facing camera. I have the option to tether my phone but don't. I'd never use that. Guess thats 1 more reason (to go with the other 699) to not get an iPhone.

Sounds like it sucks to be an AT&T customer.

HSDPA is worldwide and many people will now be interested...

Also Apple didn't discontinue the old iPhone 3G, makes me wonder if they plan on something.

And since when do you believe rumors/get in the hype?

HSDPA is the most important feature and that means 1 less accessory for me carry (3G HSDPA modem).

Yeah I am disappointed that there isn't flash or a different design, but it's a small upgrade, look at Nokia n95 to N95 8GB..  megapixels on camera phone? useless without proper focus, I hope the focus is good. Want better MP? buy a proper camera!

let me put my points (as a person who uses GSM 3G devices regularly) on why iPhone 3GS is disappointing:

1. lack of HSUPA. look it up

2. no flash on the camera (either LED or regular flash)

3. design is too similar to the old design. at least accessories will be the same. unless Apple isn't revealing the design until launch?

4. no front camera. I used video call for a total of 2:10 minutes in the last 3 years

5. no additional button on the side for camera. This is actually important ;)

6. replaceable battery/expandable memory. One can only dream? :)

Way I see it, Americans should just get the iPhone from hong kong or somewhere that sells it unlocked. I can't believe how much controls American carriers want...

I know youtube functionality is touted by apple and palm alike as a major selling point for their smart phones. But honestly, I don't really care to watch most of the garbage on youtube. What I want to know is, can I watch hulu on either device. My contract with verizon is up in a few months, and although my treo is great for business, I want to watch my episodes of firefly and dollhouse on the go. So the first company to raise their hand and tell me their product can do that, you get my business.

avatar

jcollins

5 reasons?  There's 699 reasons for me not to upgrade my iPhone 3G.  Every other reason falls by the wayside.  There's just nothing there worth it to me.

avatar

xolinlevh

i have never been more outraged at ATT/Apple untill now, i just read that fine print about upgrading my iphone 3G, why are they doing this? i know many of my friends who didnt get the first iphone in favor of waiting for the 3G, and now we are all blocked from upgrading by this rediculus price? why apple? why?

avatar

arkweld

and this is different to every piece of electronics released in the past 20 years, how?

My GTX 280 cards got superceded by the 285s 4 months after I bought them. Surprised? Nope. Do I care? not really. The 280 card still works just as well as it did and product upgrade cycles should be expected. Am I going to complain that the new cards are $400? No, because I have no reason to buy them.

Like many people the outrage is generated not by a sense of need. It's generated by a sense of want. Do you need to upgrade your phone? Does it not work? I'm guessing it still works fine.

So why care if it's more expensive? You don't really need one.

They could price the iPhone at a billion dollars and I wouldn't care, because I don't need one anyway.

avatar

mesiah

I'm sure the iphone 3gs will still be wildly popular thanks to the drones of apple zombies who are mesmerized by the shiney plastic that apple parades in front of them. Just the way ipods continue to sell like hotcakes when there are plenty of media players on the market with more bells and whistles. The palm pre could dispense free money and most of the zombies wouldn't even take a second glance at it. Case and point, the local news featured the release of the new iphone tonight, but I dont recall seeing any announcement about palm or blackberry product launches.

i used to have max pc as my homepage i let my subscription for the mag drop..... i am interested in computers and computer eq.

i certainly will not pay to read articals about cell phones, cameras and the like. if i want a camera i will find out info about it in a mag that specializes in cameras certainly you do not trust maxx pc to recomend or even evaluate a quality camera... i sure don't

they used to do a pretty good job with computer eq today i'm not so sure.....how many time have you purchased a recomended best of the best  then after the fact, found out it had a fatal flaw

that's where i'm at looking for a hardcore puter mag that is like maxx used to be

True dat.  If Maximum PC wants to cover mobile stuff so much, they shouldn't have let MobilePC (later Mobile) magazine die.

avatar

Cwittofur

So the MMS means no video messages. But what about pictures? That is one of the main complaints I've had about the iPhone. If I can send pictures, I could care less what else is "new". Not to mention AT&T is going over the edge thinking they should start charging for "tethering". Who the hell cares, you can use your phone pretty much as a standard web browser, granted a smaller screen, but it's all the same.

avatar

Tekzel

MMS is picture messaging too, so no go on that.

avatar

Geeksquadmyss

I just want a fucking phone that makes calls!  thats it!  I dont need facebook on my phone, or to look up movie times on my phone!  God damn im sick of smart phones...I just want to call people

avatar

We live in rual KY where cell phone coverage is a luxury rather than a given and I have to say that the little Motorola that she has from TracFone is the best.  I have been able to get out when both an IPhone and a BlackBerry Bold wouldn't.

avatar

Caballera

You can then get a Virigin Mobile prepaid phone for $20.00.

I'm getting a iPhone 3GS, it'll be my first smartphone.  I'm suprised at all the 3G users whining, guess there is just a lot of jealousy.  You complain about how much it's going to cost to upgrade, yet you give 4 other reasons why not to upgrade.. so why would you be pissed about it being so expensive to upgrade??? lol   Aso I don't see a lot of people complain when say the new Lenovo or new HP laptops come out with a minor processor speed upgrade and more RAM every 6 months+.  We have so much expectations for smartphones.  How would you recommend they change the design?  it's pretty much all just a f#@$@ display.

As for a new user I would definitely spend the $199.00 for the 16GB GS.

Geez this magizine is getting bad.. First they can't even deliver a copy to my house now they have to start writting horrible articles?

avatar

Caboose

It is a bazillion times easier to upgrade your computer than it is to upgrade your cell phone. Both in cost and features. You could spend $700 or more on a new smartphone every 6mo to a year to get the newest iCrap and anal rape from Steve Jobs, OR pay say, $200 for a faster and bigger HDD and some more RAM for your laptop. Not to mention, the laptop will last a helluva lot longer than the smartphone. And if you know what you're doing, you can upgrade your laptop's CPU as well. Might be a little more difficult, but it's possible, and cheaper in the long run.

iPhone's battery isn't holding a charge? Oh well, buy a new iphone and spend $600+. Laptop battery's not holding a charge? Buy a new one for a quarter of the price of a new iPhone.

iPhone memory is toast? Too bad, buy a new iphone. HDD or RAM have shit itself? Spend $80 to $120 and buy a new HDD or new RAM. If you're lucky, you can xfer your data from the old HDD to the new one. Can't do that w/the iPhone.

All of you blind Apple fan-freaks are disgusting. You drool and pine over every piece of crap that comes out of Apple, will pay through the nose and give your kidneys to buy the newest POS that Apple releases, and then have the gall to call PC users idiots, misguided and plain stupid? Hmmm... I'd rather spend $2500 on a PC that I built myself, and can comfortably use for 5+ years before I need a major upgrade. Usually consisiting of a CPU or Video Card, and am not required to buy an entirely new system just to use the next annual release of MacOS. All of you apple fan-freaks need to get off of your high horses and join the rest of us in reality.

singling out an iPhone and comparing it to a laptop is idiotic.

There are millions of smart phone users out there who don't use an iPhone. Anyone on a Blackberry for a start. The iPhone is no more expensive than many other smart phones with contract - $300 vs the HTC Touch at $380.

The vast majority of users of smart phones are corporate and have no problem buying a new device every year if they have the money. They don't need a hardware reason. The latest model just has to be more shiny.

And when was the last time you saw your company accountant or manager or HR exec dragging a laptop around at lunch because it's easy to upgrade? Probably never because I'm guessing you don't work in a corporate environment.

avatar

Caboose

I work in a corporate environment. And I see HR execs, Accounting managers, sales people, CEO and the company president with laptops. They also have BB's, and some of them are even switching over to netbooks! So I see it all the time.

-= I don't want to be dead, I want to be alive! Or... a cowboy! =-

avatar

arkweld

no you didn't read what I said. When was the last time you saw them dragging it outside to go to lunch or jump into a quick meeting or conference call? When was the last time you saw someone walking around a grocery store with a laptop?

They don't. Corporate users treat a laptop as a desktop and a smart phone as portable unit to stay in communication because it provides basic computer functionality with widespread network coverage. Which is exactly what most users do.

Try telling your CEO he should ditch his Blackberry because you can upgrade a laptop and he'll laugh in your face and send you to work in the mail room, because your laptop cost argument is idiotic.

avatar

Havok

I have to agree with Caboose arkweld. More managers, CEOs and all around general business people are starting to use notebooks, mac, net or windowed. And not just for desktop replacements. Case in point. The HP DV2 notebook. Or tablet Pcs. The reps for our company use em on the go ALL the time. They go thru something like 2 blackberrys a year, but their working mobile computer stations AKA laptops still work from 4 years ago. They just throw 30 bucks worth of RAM at em and reformat. Bingo. New machine.
   OMGWTFBBQ

avatar

shomval

you see , all your CEOs have quite nice pays ,  heck , they already bought new laptops or netbooks already anyway , it all depends on which phone you want , want a berry? get it , wanna apple? get it

especially since the iphone looks nicer and with that 'find my iphone' thing I'm sure quite a few of them would love to buy it , they don't lose much anyway

its really just up to THEM , Caboose is just giving an opinion from his stingy point of view

I heard no rabid fan boy 'squeees' today. My Apple fanboy buddy never told me this was coming out. Oh well, at least they've managed to get rid of all that excess depleted uranium and put it to 'good' use! All the Apple fanboys will slowly keel over from radiation poisoning! This'll be the best iPhone release ever!

Well, except may be for this one!

I dont have an iphone so would it still be stupid to go for the 3GS?

I was already ready to pay $199, but now i see the 3G for $99.

 Crap lol

avatar

SEALBoy

It's your call. Personally, I would just go with the 3G. You'll be sacrificing some speed and a 3.0MP camera+video, but remember, a lot of the new features will be available in the free iPhone 3.0 update, which will work on the 3G iPhone.

avatar

exaltedbladder

yup u should get a pre :P

avatar

Caboose

Or go with the HTC G1 (Dream) Android phone if you want one now. Unless you can wait until the G2 comes out. The G1 weighs a bit more than the iPhone, but I find it superior in many ways, aside from not having to use iTunes and other Apple iCrap, I find the speed and functionality of the G1 to be amazingly awesome!

Who writes your tech articles -- Joan and Melissa Rivers?

This article isn't even an actual REVIEW!  Why are you blaming AT&T 's foot-dragging on MMS and tethering on Apple?  All Apple did was provide support for the feature so that it would be availabe once AT&T gets off its collective, lazy, massive a*s to put it out!

I see articles like this and I get the impression that MaximumPC's journalistic integrity is in question.  Since when does MaximumPC CRUCIFY a product before it's even been released?

Has MaximumPC now resorted to bashing products before even subjecting it to a review?  For crying out loud, this is the sort of fluff-journalism I'd expect from a tissue-paper journal like PC magazine, not from MaximumPC.

Here's to the most unprofessionally written castigation of a consumer electronics product I've ever read.
