$2,200 Buys You a Serenade from Dell's New Alienware Aurora Gaming System
The marketing mavens at Dell are singing praise about the OEM's new Alienware Aurora system, which they describe as "a serenade to raw gaming power." The rebuilt Aurora debuts on Dell today starting at $2,199 and is supposed to be "without a doubt, the most advanced Alienware desktop to date," and not just because it's sitting pretty on a Sandy Bridge-E foundation.
Let's start with the specs. The Alienware Aurora is a micro-ATX system housed in a familiar and funky Alienware chassis. A base configuration includes an Intel Core i7 3930K six-core processor overclocked up to 3.9GHz, 8GB of DDR3-1600 memory, AMD Radeon HD 6870 graphics card, 1TB hard drive (7200 RPM), 24X DVD burner, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and the usual assortment of I/O ports, including USB 3.0.
In addition to an updated chipset (the previous Aurora was built around Intel's P67 Express platform; the updated one is built around X79), the new Aurora sports a slightly modified ALX chassis with active vents along the top; enhanced AlienFX with more programming zones; tool-less, cable-free, slide-in hard drive caddies; and AC power independent internal theater lighting.

The worst computer I have ever owned was an Alienware laptop.
Terrible customer service and too expensive for what I got.
I was willing to pay extra for the suposed better quality and support from Alienware.
Boy was I wrong about both of those.

Why does MaxPC insist on advertising for Alienware. They have by far the worst customer ratings in the industry. There are much better builders out there, assuming you're not building it yourself.

But they have an alien's face on the enclosure, and that makes them really gay.

I actually went to the configuration link just to be sure they actually paired an Intel Core i7 3930K, with a Radeon 6870 and called it a "gaming rig". You'd likely get better gaming performance out of a 2600K and a 6950 and save yourself about a $160 off the top right there.

What? Businesses want to make a profit? GASP! How dare they! At least the price : perfomance ratio is better than that of Apple. These are for people who want to game and don't want / know how to build their own PC's.
As a side note, I wish they would sell just the case. I, at least, think the cases look cool. It's a shame the hardware inside is rather mediocre.

There is a difference between making a profit and gouging. The Alienware brand once commanded top-tier pricing, but they are no longer an upper-echelon boutique vendor.
