Microsoft Invites Testers for New Xbox 360 Disc Format
Microsoft’s Major Nelson today called on US-based Xbox 360 owners to participate in an upcoming “public preview to help us prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format.” Calling it an “important update,” he revealed in a blog post that Microsoft is on the lookout for “multiple thousands” of testers. More details await you after the jump.
The public preview is restricted to Xbox Live members residing in the continental U.S., for it involves disc distribution. At this point, it isn’t known what is meant by a new Xbox 360 disc format. What could it possibly be? Is this Microsoft’s latest anti-piracy measure, or could it be something to do with the amount of data that can be stored on a DVD?
All successful applicants are guaranteed to receive a free copy of Halo Reach, with the further possibility of other rewards. You can register for the program by visiting this page on the Microsoft Connect site.

There's no way it'll be blu-ray unless the DVD drive in ALL 360's since launch have secretly been holding a blu-ray laser and hardware. Which they don't.
And there's no way for the console to magically write a serial number to the disc to prevent it from being re-sold or rented, as NONE of the 360's contain writers or the necessairy hardware.

This is a screen from the registration form. Looks like a possible dashboard update that can't be changed for some reason

Probably some hybrid rom-rw format that enables console lockins on a disk-by-disk basis or something.

I could actually see this happening. The first time a new disc is inserted into the console, MP and any DLC/bonus content will then be locked to that console and that disk by burning that console's serial number into a once writeable part of the disk :/
Or to go even further, it would completely eliminate second hand sales by not even functioning in another console :/. I find it hilarious that with all the alleged problems (according to devs/publishers and the like) with PC gaming and "piracy," they are making the consoles more and more like the PC (no second hand sales or easy way to lend and rent games). Sigh, I just don't get it..

that makes absolutely no sense at all considering that the xbox doesnt have a burner. and for your content being locked to a console, thats just as silly. with all the rrod happening, they would only be shooting themselves in the foot

I see what Danthrax is saying. maybe if there were DX11 consoles, the consoles wouldn't hold back devs from making awesome looking games that take atvantage of DX11 hardware opposed to what's happening now with games like Crysis 2, all versions would be in DX11 if the consoles were capable, seeing as devs tend to cater more to consoles. of the PC versions will still be the best.
