May 2011 Update for Boxee Box to Add Support for iPad, Faster Browser
An upcoming firmware update promises to add more awesomeness to the Boxee Box platform. The update is slated for May 2011, or just one month after the previous firmware upgrade. After that, Boxee says it set a goal to release new firmware "every 3 months or so," with each one introducing "a healthy mix of new and improved functionality together with bug fixes."
Next month's update will introduce a better performing browser with faster loading and scrolling, favorites, and history. Video playbook will sport improved fast forward and rewind controls, as well as a new look for the on-screen display. You'll be able to sort local files by source, and Boxee is adding support for Apple's iPad tablet. How exactly the two will interact remains to be seen. Finally, new language options are being added, including French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish.
Several bug fixes will be part of the upcoming update as well. Some of these include:
- Occasionally when trying to download and install applications it will result with "signature failed" message
- Using USB IR receiver duplicate button presses are occasionally generated
- HTTPS URLs cannot be invoked from the search bar
- Update is prompted during paused video
- Special characters are displayed wrong
