Palm CEO Wants a Mulligan, Says Pre Could Have Beat Droid
There's no crying in baseball, but there's plenty of boo-hooing in Silicon Valley. The latest sobs come from Jon Rubinstein, CEO of Palm, who's having a tough time accepting that Motorola's Droid won the foot race into Verizon.
"If we could have launched at Verizon prior to the Droid, I think we would have gotten the attention the Droid got. And since I believe we have a better product, I think we could have even done better," Rubinstein laments.
Maybe, maybe not. By the time Droid came to market, the Palm Pre had already been available for four months, and it's probably not fair to cast the blame on Sprint, the Pre's exclusive launch partner and th reason why Palm wasn't available in Verizon stores.
Rubinstein might also be underestimating a little freight train called Android, currently the fastest growing OS on the market. Whether the Pre could have made it into Verizon first or not, it's hard to imagine that the Droid wouldn't have been popular either way.
More bellyaching here.

Back then, handheld personal computing was all Palm...and a little bit of Sony (the Sony Clie). I think Palm should look back, and ask themselves why they were essentially the only ones in the market.

I lovemy HTC Eris. Completely ignored the Palm spot over at the local Verizon store. I was thinking about the actual Motorola DROID, but decided against it, due to the slider... not a fan of actual keyboards. But, my first taste of Android, so far, makes me really happy I ditched the iPhone, and AT&T. Much happier now!

And how is it more of a smartphone for beginners?? I have both a touch pro and a palm pre but I use the pre because it is much more powerful and stable than win 6.1/6.5 ever thought of being. Besides, the pre is a much better phone than anything I have ever used by HTC. I'm not saying that android OS isn't better than WebOS, I just prefer Web OS to android.

I was actually thinking about getting a Palm Pre when it came out on Verizon's network, but ultimately chose a Droid Eris for the superiority of the Android OS, and when I realized that I should get a phone with no moving parts...
As far as the Pre versus the Motorola Droid, though, the Pre is more of a smartphone for beginners...
