Nice artical Paul, as I had not considerd replacing the thermal paste, as who knows what HP uses for thier laptops, flour and water?

avatar

Caboose

Most use a thermal pad, and I've had a few dells come across my workbench that I sware used a thermal adhesive.

The stuff is usually very low quality and is a pain in the ass to clean off!

avatar

AMD4298

if you had your computer on within then to 48 hours the thermal paste is still hot and may act like an adhesive, i tried to take the cooler off my computer when i turned it off 2 minutes ago when it was running full boar and i swear it was like very small dots of industrial glue! ;P

avatar

Caboose

No, this PC had been off for a while.

lol, so I might not have been to far off ;-) I could only get so far in dismantling my HP Pavilion DV4i and had to quit. Could not find a Google search to get me the rest of the way, rats.

You probably disconnected the monitor cable. As it says in the last steps, check for any cables you may have bumped loose. The monitor cable will usually be a wide, flat cable (up to an inch wide or so). If you have an MXM video card, like the laptop model used in the article, you should check to make sure it's still firmly inserted in its slot.

u also need a static wrist band. u always need one when ur working around computers

avatar

Bean Bandit

It's good practise to always have one but if you know what your doing and you want to risk it well.

Yeah I just finished replacing the heatsink in two laptops a little bit ago. Tthose laptops required a complete dissasembly and was quite the pain.  Wish all laptops were designed like the one in the article.

I have a msi gx640 and it has very similar cooling system. however you will need a copper shim for the gpu for better contact. And yes ac 5 is really old stuff. maximumpc come on now is 2010, ac 5 came out like what 10 years ago?

avatar

Caboose

So? It's still used a lot, and is really good stuff. Who cares about when it was released?

avatar

AMD4298

What the gtx 640 dosent exist! im gessing it uses DirectX12 or DirectX13 and GDDR6 or GDDR7!

avatar

What are you talking about?

I'm talking about Arctic Silver 5. Read the post! YEESH!

that is not good. since you open your laptop, i bet msi will warranity it. but check it anyways, i heard msi has good customer support

avatar

Don't use Arctic Silver 5 unless you already have it, IC Diamond 7, Arctic Cooling MX-3, and Tuniq TX-4 are way better options.

avatar

siramic

Just read some reviews for IC Diamond 7 @Frozen CPU, sounds like good stuff, thanks for that heads up :-)

Every laptop is different. On some of them, you unscrew some screws on the bottom and the keyboard comes right out. On some you have to also slide a couple of thingybobs that are between Esc/F1, F4/F5, F8/F9 and F12/Scroll lock. On other laptops that I've seen recently you have to take a strip of plastic off that's above the keyboard, usually by unscrewing screws that are in the back and bottom of the laptop. After you remove the strip you will see a couple of screws that the keyboard is attached with.

You should probably Google for "XYZ disassembly" (where XYZ is the type of your laptop; don't use the quotes in Google), chances are that someone has already figured it out and put the pictures online. If not, try the forums at notebookreview.com.

to clean your keyboard usually you take out your battery, and in the compartment where the battery is located there should be about three or four screws, remove those and slide your keyboard out.

To keep the gunk out of your keyboard, my best advice to you would be get a girlfriend

Whats a good way to clean out the keybaord section? I have so much gunk in my laptop keyboard...

i discovered this about 5 years ago with my HP Pavilion DV5000t, this is a big issue that plagues even new computers.  It has to do with crappy thermal paste that is overapplyed and dries out very fast.  I perform this repair about 4 to 5 times a day.  I have become an expert on this at my job.  the sad truth most people are intimidated by laptop repairs.  I love tearing apart laptops.  Here is my youtube video of doing this repair. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHqzzrVRQBs  I did this in the middle of the College cafe.  Most laptops aren't as easy as the guide shows.  Most laptops require a full dissasembly.  Just like in my video.

Helps just a little bit to actually read the artical and see that its referring to Laptop computers.

The information in your link is for Desktop computers.

Apples and oranges.

avatar

jakthebomb

The link is to a youtube video that i am in and created.  I read the artical and think that Maximum PC is lazy.  The Laptop that they used accounts for 10% of the laptops i fix.  Most require a full disascembly.  Also English?  since when does Spelling refer to english, English is a language, spelling is grammar.  If i mispelled a spanish word it would be considerd un error de gramática.

Being able to spell isn't a determining factor of inteligence nor the ability to repair computers or Electronics.  I know i can't spell that is why we have spell check.

I recently went through this on a 3-yr old Inspiron that deployed to Iraq and back with me. While the cleaning article is excellent, it fails to mention that sometimes you just gotta let go of an old fan. The CPU and GPU fans on my laptop had begun to sound like a vacuum cleaner minutes after startup and I couldn't take it anymore. As my last resort, I Googled the part numbers of the fans and with a couple hours research, managed to track down a couple sites that sell new & used fans pretty cheap. Gave my laptop new life.

avatar

Gcommer

Hey, I'm curious what your example laptop is? It looks a lot like my MSI laptop I have.

My laptop actually just recently began overheating randomly, making games unplayable, even on lower than normal graphics settings.  I tried everything, including under-clocking my laptop, until I just blew a puff of compressed air in the vents on the side (Still under warranty), and a giant cloud of dust flew out!  Laptop ran good as new after that :D I would highly suggest that everyone on a laptop do this regularly.

avatar

elo231

It is MSI as you can somewhat see the name on the white label.

Another thing to note, the COA telling which OS it's preinstalled has faded. Sooner or later the product key will fade out too.

I need to do this in the worst way.  I've gone about as far as canned air will allow.

What thermal paste would you recommend?  I have a dell XPS m1530 heat beast for reference.

avatar

Caboose

I use Arctic Silver 5 (AS5). Same stuff I use on Desktops. As long as you apply it properly and don't make a mess, it works well.

avatar

Wiked_smart

Most people will recommend Arctic silver 5 however its mostly your preference as long as its a name brand its usually good.

avatar

Nickompoop

They recommend Arctic Silver 5.
