GeForce GTX 580 Bests Radeon HD 6970 in 3DMark 11
If you're wondering which is the faster videocard, Nvidia's GeForce GTX 580 or AMD's Radeon HD 6970, don't take this as the end-all-be-all. But for what it's worth, Nvidia's crown jewel came out ahead of AMD's upcoming Cayman part in the newly released 3DMark 11 benchmark during Fudzilla's limited round of tests.
Fudzilla said the HD 6970 scored lower than 8,000 at entry settings while the GTX 580 posted 8700 in the same test. The GTX 570 scored just above 8,000.
At the performance level, AMD's Cayman card posted a score around 5,300, while the GTX 580 scored a little below 6,000 and the GTX 570 managed 5,250. Things leveled out a little bit at the Extreme settings, with the HD 6970 posting 1,800, while the GTX 580 scored 1,950.

If Nvidia wants to compare a $600 card to a $350 card and boast about a 4 frame per second advantage at 2560x1600 resolution : any takers!
Jump on over to Tomshardware page and check out a true match-up. A $200 Radeon HD 6850 in crossfire comes to, let's see _ $400, and literally smokes the GTX 580 in the highest settings of some game benchmarks. If you want more performance, step up to a $250 Radeon HD 6870 in crossfire. Or if your an Nvidia fan even the $200 GTX 460 or $270 GTX 470 in sli is your better option. Let's get back to comparing performance with price. The lower priced mid-ranged cards are by far the best in this scenario.

I'm going to agree with everyone else saying this. I would like to see how these cards perform in games. What games doesn't matter to me. While I personally prefer Nvidia, I still don't think this proves much.

I want benchmarks that tell me something about real world performance. So Crysis, Metro 2033, and Unigine (for tessellation and because it is a real game engine) are what I want to see.
Synthetic benchmarks that don't use actual game engines are not very helpful.
I really want these Radeons to do well and be priced low so I can get me a 6850 after the kind of price drop the gx 460 saw this fall so i can put one in my HTPC.
i dont get the fanboys from either side. its not nvidia vs amd. its producers vs consumers. the more competitive the two are, the better value we get. nvidia fanboys should be cheering for the 69xxs, so that the gtx 570 and 580 will drop in price! and amd fans should love the gtx 570, because it makes the $450 gtx 480 worth less than 350, and puts downward pressure on the amd card prices.

Did you actually read the comments? They consisted of "150 points isn't anything" to "The AMD card hasn't even been officially released. Lets re-run this when it's officialy out with mature drivers".
You know, it's actually the opposite, I usually see nVidia fanbois crying bloody murder when an AMD card performs better.

Have you ever seen an ATI and nvidia card that perform the on par with each other in games, but as soon as you run 3dmark, BAM, nvidia wins the bench. Why? 3Dmark is catered to nvidia.
I wanna see real world benches, not some program that faunts points around.

I agree with the others. The 6970 hasn't even been released yet. Nor are there official drivers for it. Geez, how much is Nvidia paying these guys to trash AMD?

Usually these benchmarks nvidia will win every time. On top of that, a mere 150 point difference isn't all that much. Tad overclock and you got yourself something that can do some damage. This is why I hate fudzilla....and sometimes MPC at times. Full blow review WITH MATURE DRIVERS and the 6970 will probably be on par with the GTX580.

I Agree.
Personally I don't pay any attention to the 3D Mark score. I wait for the Crysis / Call of Duty Benches
