Garmin Considers Exiting the Cellphone Market

Apple and Google seem to get all the press in the mobile industry, but it’s easy to forget that Garmin has had a smartphone in the game now for over a year. GPS junkies aside, these handsets never seem to have reached the market share levels the company was expecting and CFO Kevin Raukman has suggested that they might finally be pulling the plug on their handset division. In an interview with Reuters he said they would need to make a decision on how to proceed within the “next couple of quarters”.
Raukman’s decision will boil down to either continuing forward with what appears to be a failing platform, or “pull back”. Garmin has had a tough time gaining a foothold in the mobile industry, but it would be rather unfortunate to see them give up all together. I think most smartphone enthusiasts would agree that the days of a dedicated single purpose GPS are numbered, which means Garmin could face a tough road ahead if they give up on mobile.
Anyone out there ever own a Garminfone?

I've got the Garminfone. It was free at T-Mobile on father's day. Garmin/Asus did themselves in by going with a slow processor and Android 1.3. This thing defines sluggish. Calls are missed because it is too slow to load the phone at times. To my knowledge, it has only very recently been rooted and there certainly isn't a cynogen mod. The GPS part is pretty nice, as is the built-in tethering, but it doesn't make up for locking you into their custom interface and limiting your options at every turn. Maybe they could turn it around by embracing the modding community, release their tools and try to make it the most mod-friendly platform on the market.

Dedicated GPS devices are dying. I had one installed in my car for some time. But my recent mobile phone outdo the dedicated device in its function and purpose. Now i took down the dedicated device and rely on my phone instead.
Unless the GPS device came attached to the newly purchased car, there's really no point and no future for such device in the market.
Garmin, and other GPS companies should have lowered their prices while théy're still relevant a couple of years back, and make a killing before they become obsolete. Which is happening now. They've been too greedy in the recent past. And it's just that they die off.
It will be wiser to stick to the mobile phone strategy, and try to come up with sometime interesting for consumers to take notice.

Well here is a smart idea...fire the people who thought it be cool to make a phone! Hire and promote the ones who designed the app and get it on the iphone and android asap. I would try to work with apple to get some of their circuits inside the iphone to get the thing super accurate.

The problem with this is that Google Maps is free, and does a lot. How would you convince someone to pay money for a Garmin app when Google has a robust free alternative that's preloaded on almost every Apple and Android smart phone?

While Google maps does a lot, they're still missing some key features when compared with a dedicated unit. That said, I would expect Google to add those eventually. However, in the meantime, if Garmin or someone was smart and NOT greedy, they could build an interface to Google maps that added the missing features and make some money that way.

i do own 3 garmin GPS devices and will never buy another one. every smart phone pretty much comes with a map, my android google maps are perfectly fine for everyday use. if garmin came out with an Ap for it, i might be intrested, but i am not intrested in paying for yearly map updates. that old model of buisness is dying.
