Chrome Netbooks Reportedly Shipping this Month
Upcoming netbooks armed with Google's open-source, cloud-based Chrome operating system should finally start appearing later this month, DigiTimes reports.
Among the upcoming notebooks will be a Google branded unit similar in strategy to the Nexus One smartphone. Inventec will be in charge of the producing the Google netbook with first-run shipments expected to reach 60,000 to 70,000 units. These will be built around an ARM-based platform, DigiTimes says.
After Google leads the way, Acer and Hewlett-Packard will fall in line with Chrome netbooks of their own, both of which are targeting a December launch. Asus, meanwhile, plans to sit on the sidelines and observe the market before making a decision on whether or not to dive in.

Well, I've been using different builds of open source "Chromium" for a little over a year now on my 15" Acer laptop. (which works well since its optical drive died years ago and I never bothered to replace it)
Booting off of a flash drive it works really well, it boots in 15-30 seconds and if you already use a number of google services, it's a pretty slick way to get on line in a hurry without having to wait for a full resident OS to load, but it's still a lot more capable than IOS is, plus, you know, having a physical keyboard to work with.
I like it, and I think if they handle the publicity right, it would easily knock off some of the tablet thunder.
