AMD Preps New Single-Core Sempron Chip
In this landscape of multi-core chips, including hexa-core parts from both Intel and AMD, apparently there's still a market for pokey single-core parts. Just ask AMD, who plans on releasing a new Semporn chip -- the Sempron 150 -- in the fourth quarter of 2010.
Destined for the bargain bin, the Sempron 150 will come built around a 45nm manufacturing process and run at 2.9GHz. it will also boast 1MB of cache.
Like other Sargas-based Semprons, the 150 will support DDR3-1066 and slip into AM3 boards/sockets.
No word yet on how much this upcoming budget chip will cost.

These chips are destined for cheap WalMart laptops. To think someone would settle for a single core laptop in this day and age. Puh-Leez....
This may work in a calculator, but I've heard that PC CPU's aren't the best choice for scientific calculators because of the way the chips work. Oh well. Maybe not.
Really, why even build single and dual core chips anymore? The minimum should be quad core chips with emphasis on two different markets. One being high performance processing regardless of the energy used and another would be for low energy consumption chips for businesses and laptops.
Quad cores and more should be the focus these days. Don't build anymore single and dual cores. We don't want your singles and duals..

Some people are in the market for a cheap, simple processor with a low TDP for use in NAS boxes or similar applications. In this case, a single-core processor is perfectly sufficient. There is already a market for the existing Sempron 140, and this new revision will have the same 45W TDP, which makes it perfect for builds where the HDD or Network will be the bottleneck and adding a core (or three as you suggest) would just be wasted energy. Adding to this lineup seems like a reasonable choice by AMD.

Hmm. AMD is releasing "a new Semporn chip." Is this a Freudian typo or what? :-)
