DRM is like a bad joke: Generally, the only person laughing about it is the one who let it loose in the first place. Every once in a while, though, somebody hits the nail on the head, and we all get to fuel our mirth with some clueless pirate's enraged tears. Does that make us bad people? Maybe, but still: Hahahahaha. Ahem. So anyway, Bohemia Interactive recently bagged itself a big one using a copy protection scheme called FADE. How's it work? Well...
It all began when a Take on Helicopters player posted the following message on the game's forum:
“Why does the screen go blurry like I'm under water sometimes? What am I doing wrong?”
You'll notice that this player now sports a nice, subtle “BANNED” tag under their name. That's because they encountered Bohemia's FADE tech, which causes pirated game copies to slowly degrade over time. So pirates get a nibble – and maybe they even end up hooked – but then the whole thing turns to a goopy mess and slips through their fingers. The implicit lesson? Drop a few coins in Bohemia's cup and this won't be a problem.
“Obviously game developers have a responsibility to themselves to try to protect their company’s future, but also a responsibility to the community that supports them by buying their titles. No gamer who has spent their hard earned money to buy a game wants to be playing MP against others who didn’t buy their game, no addon maker wants to have things they created over countless hours downloaded and used by people who didn’t buy the game it’s intended for,” the developer said in a statement (via VG247).
“That is why we try to come up with unique and irrefutable ways to stop people from playing our games without paying for them. That’s why Take On Helicopters shipped with our unique antipiracy countermeasures.”
So everybody wins. Well, everybody who's not, you know, indirectly at the root of PC gaming's biggest problem, anyway. We'd say that's a pretty happy ending, all things considered.

What man can make man can break, but this is a good idea for DRM. Most of the people i know who say they pirate music, games, ect say they do it to try it out. So this drm will allow pirates to try it out and once they are done trying it out FADE!. If they like it go buy it.. lol

Although Holly is the resident MaxPC.com troll, I have to agree with her this time. If the pirates want to play this game, they'll bypass this DRM, too. I've said it before, and I'll repeat it -- they duped the Steam checks for multi-player, for Pete's sake. This kind of DRM is like introducing a new "bump proof" lock to a lock-picking hobbyist. He'll just find another way to pick it, just for his own amusement.

I wouldn't call Holly a troll. In fact I'm usually on her side. Comrades, you know. But I do think she's wrong on this one.
I really think all the DRM needs to go EXCEPT systems like this one. And its not because I think the pirates should win. It's because DRM is more abusive and annoying to paying customers than the actual pirates. As long as paying customers don't get caught in the net, I really like this system. It allows the only "legitimate" reason to pirate which is try before you buy. At the same time it incentivizes people to buy the game because you can't fully enjoy it if you're not a paying customer. I think it's a great way to go and I'd like to see more companies using this type of system rather than activation and disc checking schemes.
On another note, I think alot of this could be avoided by going back to shareware demos. You remember, those things that built the PC gaming industry. There's a demo of almost every XBOX game. Why the hell are so few demos available for PC games? If they were available and sharable, the try before you buy crowd would have no need to pirate. Then we'd really see who is just trying to get something without paying for it.

This is good, i can still try the game on my PC illigally and find out how well it scales with the SLI and if the game is actually good but still have insentive to buy it if it gets my seal of approval.

Great, until this wonderful system breaks on the next version of windows or something and cheats me out of my paid for game.
I have yet to encounter a DRM scheme other than steam's basic system that doesn't fuck up in some manner.

You hit it on the head, compro. While everyone is laughing it at this guy, its only a matter of time before this DRM hoses a paying customer (if it hasn't already).
I just bought a older game that would not pass the DRM using my Windows 7 machine. Solution: downloaded a crack to bypass the DRM, worked great. Sheesh, I'm a paying customer, bought direct from the publisher and could not run it because of borked DRM. If I had just stole the stuff I wouldn't have had a problem. Who's the idiot.

Piracy laws like most felonies of this type go unenforced because it costs way too much to enforce them. Misdemeanors are much easier to enforce, like speeding tickets for example. One cop, many tickets, in a short amount of time means a lot of easy money. Homicide and abuse cases go unresolved because of lack of investigative personnel, tight budgets and the huge expense to solve these types of crimes. It's doubtful that piracy laws will ever be enforced on a large scale within our lifetime. Publishers attempt to enforce piracy but with little success.
The only people I feel bad for are the developers, they get ripped off both by the publishers and the pirates. As far as I am concerned, both publishers and pirates are in the same cesspool trying to compete against each other. The same goes for hackers running proggies and changing code to cheat legitimate players who want to play by the Terms of Service. Thank goodness that there are still good men and women (and their children), out there who enjoy playing a game in the theme and spirit as intended to be played by the developers.

This DRM is hilarious. I'd like to see a comparison on effectiveness between this type of lockdown and the traditional varieties that everyone here hates.
A multi-monitor taskbar program I own displays a message if it catches you using a serial number they've blacklisted. It's a picture of a guy with his family--"You're not stealing from some big corporation, you're stealing from me, [name]."
Basically, when DRM gets creative, I tend to give it a pass. Because the big studios who are buttmunches are never creative, nor do they every have any arguments other than "Hurr durr losing money" before they post another record profit.
Also, I've seen this person's comments before. Anyone else think this is a troll?

You may find it boring, this reality outside of academia (that the rest of us live in) but at least we can put together a cogent argument. You dear, have shown time again that you are unable to even defend YOUR OWN blathering, let alone comprehend the philosophies of others (including communism and socialism).It is obvious to all that you know nothing of how the real world works, and that’s fine. Generally speaking, so long as a counter to foolishness like yours is put forth, you are of no real danger to anyone – other than yourself.
