Alright since everyone seems to be on the side of those who crack the system tell me what is so vital that sony does't provide that you would go through all the effort to crack your system for? I can't think of any other than to pirate games... and run emulators... which again is pirating games. Because to my knowledge the PS3 is a crappy computer...

Ulrich, stop being a troll. You act like your opinions are the only ones that matter and anyone who feels differently is an idiot.

avatar

Danthrax66

This is so stupid. Why do people root Android phones? You can already use pirated software so what is the point? It is to add features. But the real point here is that I own the console and have a right to do what I want to it. Yes pirating is illegal but Geohot didn't pirate he found aa way to unlock his console, that he owned, and shared it.

"what is so vital that sony does't provide that you would go through all the effort to crack your system for?"

You could ask the military that question and they would tell you linux. They run a cluster of PS3s as a super computer for calculations that help protect your ass. After they removed the linux feature the Army can no longer update the consoles or purchase new/replacement consoles. Essentially Sony is fucking over the Army and should be considered an enemy of the state. Sony is a terrorists organization we should now invade their neighboring compaies and start an occupation that will never end.

avatar

Ulrich

Hah, I almost fell out of my chair laughing. The army is still using those PS3's there is no need for them to upgrade to a new firmware. Sony will repair any of the failed units. The same thing happens with any super computer over time... once it has been replaced by something new you have to move on and get the next best thing... or pay to repair your current unit. I'm pretty certain you can't buy the same computer from IBM that you bought 6 years ago... and why would you?

I would do it so I can fold on the PS3 again.

Now you are being ignorant by saying that "pirating" is the only reason to hack a system. You cannot actually pirate anything on the system itself. So your argument is invalid. It requires the ability to copy the games and burn them for it to be "pirating". The PS3 is not hardware capable of doing that.

Emulators are mostly games that cannot be found on the open market anymore. Most were made by companies that are no longer in business anymore. So in reality, they arent losing anything from someone aquiring the game off of the internet. And if the company is still alive they dont even distribute those games anymore. They made the money allready and moved on to something different.

Stop being so one sided. People hack things to expand on what a company has allready done with the system. I did it with the original xbox back when it was all the rage. I didnt copy games or "pirate" anything. I turned it into an awesome media center and FTP server. I streamed content from my PC to the xbox. Now the whole thing on hacking the PS3... People whant what they paid for in the first place, back. The ability to use a different OS. Sony removed that for no reason, and it had an adverse effect on so many people. Like our folding community.

avatar

Ulrich

I'm one sided... lol

you can fold on the PS3 if that is your big concern.

Your best argument is to get technical, and say that you can't actually pirate anything from the PS3.... The PS3 was broken to allow it to play pirated games... is that better for you?

I do think emulation of old games that are no longer available is a good thing, and helps preserve the history of gaming. There are emulated games that are still distributed... do you disagree with that?

Out of 30+ million owners how many were adversely affected? I think your anger for loosing that feature is misplaced. That feature would still be available if people had not been trying to use that feature to break the PS3 security which is in place to help protect the dev studio's that supply the games.

I use my PS3 for pretty much everything, a media server, music player, gaming, netflix, and so on... so far you did not anser my question... what exactly do you need to break the PS3 for? Remember Folding is a native feature.

avatar

graydiggy

Like I said, you cant actually pirate anything with the console. Cracking the PS3 enables it to play Ripped games. Doesnt mean that everyone will. And what of it? If i choose to make a backup copy of a game that I own and payed  for, why cant I? I dont want the original to get all messed up with scratches and such, making me the "end user" lose money. Sony is not losing any money to People that copy games. they are losing money because the console sucks in general. Nothing has really changed much since the first one except for the whole Blu-ray feature. Oh big whoop. I can stream as many HD movies as I want for a quarter of the price of of one Blu-ray. And then they added the alternate OS feature but were quick to remove that. But nothing has really changed. They have been the same asshole company since day one, most of the games that are only for the PS3 suck, with a few exceptions, the controller has stayed the same but just went wireless... It feels like I'm holding air when I pick it up. I like to know that I have something in my hands.

The only feature I liked about the PS3 was when I could fold on it. But since I cant install Linux, I can no longer go out and buy a new 360 and fold on it.

avatar

graydiggy

Folding is no longer native since the removed the linux comatabilty.

avatar

graydiggy

I also want to expand a bit on this... I have had many Xbox 360 since they came out. Some of them have given me the e74, or red ring, or another type of broken. I fixed each and every one of them. Requiring me to do something that Microsoft didn't tell me that I was allowed to do. But damnit they are supposed to work. So instead of waiting for them to take up to a month to fix or replace the broken consoles, I decided to fix them. Hell, I even would throw a cool new case on them and some neat lights just to make it look cool. Another thing that Microsoft doesnt support.

Now my question to you. Does that make me a criminal? Should Microsoft come to me kicking my door down with a lawsuit for a ridiculous amount of money they will never get? Also, They never came when I was hacking my original xboxes with softmods, mod chips, and cosmetic mods. If i signed in to XBL while any of my modifications were turned on, they could have found out where I lived from my IP address and sued the shit out of me. But they didnt, they just banned the console from XBL< saving them time and money. Sony should do the same.

avatar

Ulrich

here's a quick question... Is Sony suing you? Is sony stopping you from not upgrading your firmware? because the being banned from PSN or XBL isn't an issue for you... then why would you need to upgrade the firmware? You choose to remove the other OS from your console not sony. They just aren't supporting that feature anymore. I liked the PS3 splash, and chime before each game... but they are not supporting that feature any longer.

avatar

graydiggy

People want the features they started with. People want to do what they so choose with something they pay hundreds of dollars for. What happened to making the customer happy? They came out with what seemed like a good thing, with all these cool features. Then they say "fuck the people" and take all of it away because they can. the ballance of power is shifting towards shitbag companies when it should be what the people want. It's the same as someone coming into your house and taking whatever they want from you, and then you can't do shit about it cause they have some legal play over it. It's absolute bullshit. Sony used to be a great company untill they joined the console wars. Now they are just another company out to fuck the people and take money.

avatar

Ulrich

First are you from 2006? I can go on my fully updated PS3 today and fold... the controllers are no longer light... if the PS3 and it's games suck then why do you own one? Once again if the only reason you got the PS3 was to run folding on other OS.... then you can still do that... all you have to do is not upgrade your firmware... and really... Sony is your biggest concern as a power happy company? You really need to wake up and get in the right fight...

jailbreaking is for the Macsholes.  The PS3 isn't your momma's iphone.

:-)

avatar

ShyLinuxGuy

Sony will probably now sue Geohot now for discouraging others from buying Sony products, effectively "stopping a sale".

"Our motivation for bringing this litigation was to protect our intellectual property and our consumers. We believe this settlement and the permanent injunction achieve this goal."

I fail to see how Sony achieved their goal, considering litigation is always an 'after the act' activity.  All their team of lawyers did was manage to get one person to agree not to peak at their system code and divulage anything he found.

What a crappy ROI for Sony Management.

You know who doesn't have to worry about Sony's BS or Microsoft's RROD or playing kids games on the Wii?

PC Gamers.  Seriously Sony, keep it up and see what happens.  I can build a middle of the road rig that will play games for close to what I'd pay for a PS3.  PC would do a hell of a lot more too.  Maybe you should stop treating customers like criminals.  I need to find a PS3 to poop on.

avatar

Ulrich

I'm failing to see your point... If you would enjoy a $300 PC better than a PS3... why do you care what Sony does to it's customers. Also I being one of those customers have never been treated like a criminal.

avatar

Danthrax66

Yeah but you also can't install linux anymore.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Thats kickin the man right in the balls. I love it.

SONY knew their position was untenable in any manner that would result in harsh punishment of the individual willfully monkeying about with their own product. The only wiggle room for SONY was the intentional dissemination of that knowledge to the public with the expressed intent of thwarting SONY's own efforts of controlling what the end-user is able to do without SONY's consent.

In the end, SONY actually lost this one, not because they weren't able to pseudo-silence GeoHot, but because by the time SONY even reacted to it, the problem was far beyond SONY's scope to reign in. They may as well try and scoop up all the sand on a beach with a fork... For all their efforts, the jailbreaking community is leaps and bounds beyond anything SONY can stop, and the software can be put on pretty much any USB thumb drive.

Between the proliferation of the software on the internet, and the ubiquitous accessibility of USB thumb drives, it's quite obvious that the problem is a genie that can never be put back into the lamp.

avatar

Ulrich

Yes they did loose this battle, but now have one of the most successful jailbreakers off the table. This was looking ahead not about now.

avatar

kiaghi7

The individual means nothing when his work is infinitely dispersed into an ocean of independence from SONY. Zeus may have punished Prometheus for giving man fire... But main still had fire... It was too late, no matter the punishment given to Prometheus after the fact.

avatar

Ulrich

I'm totally fine with the hacker nation not buying sony products. That just means less piracy, less jailbreaking, which inturn means less Sony time and money going towards security fixes... which means more money and time towards features and new games. Seriously I'm fine using my PS3 how Sony intends on me using it. If I wasn't then I have no problem finding another option.

avatar

Danthrax66

No it doesn't someone will always crack it, and now you lost the thical hackers. The malicious hackers will still try to get cheats, and pirate games. Despite piracy not even being an issue for consoles.

avatar

Ulrich

took 5 years for someone to crack it, and he stumbled on to that code by mistake. I can safely say I'm not overly concerned. Piracy in't an issue for consoles? What rock do you live under?

avatar

Danthrax66

Lets see how many units did Black Ops sell? It isn't a roblem on consoles because it takes more effort than on PC it isn't an issue just like music piracy isn't an issue, the companies are making money. They want you to think it is a problem but in reality it isn't. How many people do you know that pirate console games? It is a rarity that has no proven sales loss.

Sony takes your rights away, and 360s red ring on you. PC FTW.

Haha, that actually made me laugh out loud.
