These guys were cool when they hacked the FBI affiliate organization, US senate, and CIA. But Nintendo and Bethesda? That's gay, what the hell did they ever do? I could care less about Minecraft though. Notch turned that game into a giant pile of shit with the last 2 major updates.

@Nathan

“At any rate, gaming companies, please get on the ball here…”

And what would you suggest they do to stop such a (surely) zombie backed DDoS attack?

avatar

Ghok

I hope this'll slow down once a few arrests are made. They are causing some pretty big innconvience and pissing off everyone.

I just re-read the article and find one thing funny. It appears, (correct me if I'm wrong) if these 'elite hackers' can't find a true security hole they can exploit, they just resort to a brute force DoS attack to overwhelm the target. There's some real skill for you.

-----

"That lock on your house is a piece of garbage. I'll show you how weak it is!"

*Attempts to pick the lock, but can not do it*

"Hummm... maybe it's better than I thought."

*Gets in a truck and smashes through the lock, door, and half of the wall*

"See! like I said. What a crappy lock!"

-----

How many sites would honestly be able to withstand a massive DoS attack if it's got enough people behind it?

avatar

afunyun

No, they were just doing this "for the lulz" as per their name

They didn't try to hack the sites they DDoSed yesterday, they just took requests from people over the phone and Twitter.

avatar

KenLV

Well, if they are just doing it for the “lulz”, heck, that’s OK, right?  Just like it’s OK when the some shit breaks your car window “for the lulz of it” or they egg your car “for the lulz of it”, or steal a stop sign or bust a street lamp or shoplift or rip up your garden or spray paint your door or bust up your fence or key your car…etc… so long as they are just doing it “for the lulz of it” it’s all good fun, right?  Fucking moron.

You seem to have forgotten that they hacked Sony, Nintendo, Epic, CodeMasters and Bethesda* and stole loads of info. Granted, this probably only consisted of SQL injections, but it's more than DDoSing. Hilarious that people jump on the 'YOU CAN ONLY DDOS HAWHAW' bandwagon only a day after they actually hacked a series of companies.

*and senate.gov, and Black & Berg Cybersecurity Consulting, and pron.com and 55 other porn sites etc. etc.

avatar

Silver925

Actually, I didn't say 'YOU CAN ONLY DDOS HAWHAW'. And I'm sure you are correct with the SQL injection method - and if true, seems to be a very 'one trick pony' attack. Read carefully. When they can't find a security hole, (Read: A method to do an SQL injection) and still want to have an impact, they don't 'hack' anything and resort to a DDoS attack.

Granted, as was pointed out. They don't seem to have any point to what they are doing, just trying to cause as much disruption as they can to puff up their egos. I guess they are 'winning the fight' if that's all their aim is.

Too bad this kind of effort could actually be used to do something of substance, instead of being internet playground bullies.

You're kind of wrong there. The 'Great firewall of china' is just that. A wall. You can't hack something that can't be hacked, there is no server monitoring and stopping content (Well, of course there is a server, it's China, but it doesn't do anything apart from feed information to the government). Everything is just physically blocked. Like cutting through a wire, you can't hack a severred wire.

What??

avatar

Silver925

But his point still stands. They don't pick targets that will make any real statement, from what I can see.

"If your network security is weak, we will prove it. Because we can." Seems to be their motivation. Other than making this point, how are they helping improve the situation?

It's like 'egging' the bad teachers house in high school. The teacher might infact be bad, and deserve attention brought to the fact. 'Egging' their house makes a statement, but it draws no attention to the real issues they are 'fighting for'.

avatar

Neufeldt2002

What I would find funny, is if they hacked The Great Firewall of China giving all Chinese people the ability to see the entire web. That would be an accomplishment.

Of course they would never do it because they are cowards that use a facade to make themselves feel important and untouchable. I would wager that as we speak the noose around their necks is getting tighter and tighter.

or they're communists...which really wouldnt be much of a stretch...

Lulzsec does everything for the lulz, no reason, they don't care. However, if they like certain companies, like the one that made BRINK, they would spare everyone's user accounts and not release them to the public. That's what I heard.

Other than that... does this mean everyone should change their Minecraft passwords? Thanks.

avatar

Recidivist

You do not need to change your MC password. It was a DDoS on the login server, they did not breach the DB or steal any info.

They aparently hacked Bethesda over 2 months ago, and were just sitting on the information for a while because they liked Bethesda's Call of Cthulu so much. However, they did still blackmail Bethesda and release other info anyway.

Archtard

I do not see what the goal is.

You guys need to get your facts straight about Minecraft. When people purchased the game during the Alpha stages of development they were promised free updates forever as well as all future versions of the game for free. Now he is releasing an Xbox version and is refusing to give the Alpha purchasers this version for free despite it being part of the terms agreed upon when the Alpha purchasers bought the game. So basically Notch is in violation of EU laws regarding contracts, and he kind of deserved a little "payback".

avatar

chronium

You're misinterpreting the TOS. Future versions only apply to the PC game, so if Notch decides to release a expansion pack instead of just a update. Once it goes to another platform it because an entirely different product and does not apply to any previous agreements.

avatar

Marthian

did you not think of microsoft in that thought? Microsoft's a greedy company, if you want to put something on the Xbox, you are going to have to pay. Look at Left4Dead 2 as well, the dlc you have to pay for on there, the PC version gets it all for free because no company is forcing them to charge anyone.

Besides, I think without a doubt (like every other game in existance) it is best played on the PC due to modability.

avatar

j814wong

I really doubt Microsoft will be nice and let Alpha users get free updates after seeing how successful Minecraft is.  I especially doubt they will allow free updates for big updates.  Microsoft is not the kind of company that would like to do that.  I dislike Microsoft for many reasons and this is one of them.  They are a greedy company.  I use Linux instead and support the open-source movement and companeis like Canonical who don't work for profit.

avatar

Emmit066

I just don't get it.  It's Minecraft for God's Sake!  What has Minecraft ever done to anyone, besides provide PaulSoaresJr a way to produce some really entertaining videos and how-to's about Minecraft.

avatar

kixofmyg0t

Minecraft? Seriously?!?

Why not go all the way and go after Clippy from Microsoft Office?!?

You should probably mention that these were DDoS attacks and not hacking servers to steal personal information. They just wanted to shut these websites down because they thought it'd be funny.

What I'm surprised at is that they announced (after attempts by 4chan to hunt them down) that they were the "cream of the crop of /b/astards from 2005" and insulted today’s /b/astards. Either they just gave the people at 4chan a very narrow range of search for information on them, or they are dicking around some more.

Either way, they have successfully managed to piss off the internet.

These guys (the hackers, not the awesome MaxPC folk) are real asshats and it needs to be stopped. What they are doing is not "lulz" or funny in any way.

avatar

Marthian

They are probably not  taking it seriously because they think they won't get caught. Nothing but a bunch of weak pathetic cowards.

avatar

wolf17

Yeah, that's true.  Hopefully they get caught, get arrested, do some jail time, and then can't use a computer or any electronic communications device for at least 50 years ;)  Now /that/ would be lulz

avatar

gogochicken

Alright this is enough, EVE online... ok, League of Legends fine. BUT MineCraft welll thats hitting a little to close for comfort!!

avatar

Marthian

all the hacking attempts are getting on everyone's nerves. If I ever actually saw one of these losers in real life, I'd probably make their life hell like they've made everyone else's.

avatar

j814wong

If I could, I mess up their computers bad.  Then steal their personal information and post it for the world to see.
