GDC Odds and Ends: Crytek, Epic Reveal Mind-Blowing Next-Gen Engines, DICE Calls BS on PC Gaming's “Death,” Tons More
Last week, GDC erupted all over the gaming world, raining molten news bits down on an unsuspecting populace. Tragically, despite a very high casualty count, most of Xbox Live managed to survive. The bottom line? A whole lot of stuff happened, and odds are, some of it managed to fly under your radar. Well, no more. Here's everything you need to know.
Epic Reveals Incredible Next-Gen Unreal Tech – “Negative returns” on new technology, huh, Mr. Carmack? Well, the engine wizards over at Epic beg to differ. Somewhat shockingly, this isn't Unreal 4, either. In other words, you could theoretically strip out some of the bells, whistles, and trench coat physics and have this thing running on a friggin' iPhone 3GS. If you ask us, that's just, well, unreal. Check out a shakey cam version of the tech demo here.
Crytek Also Reveals Incredible Next-Gen Tech – Finished watching the Unreal demo? Thinking of picking your jaw up off the ground? Well, don't. At this point, it'd just be redunant.
DICE: Death of PC Gaming is “Bulls**t” – Preaching to the choir, sure, but that doesn't mean we don't like hearing it. Even if its single-player turns out to be Modern Warfare 2.5, we'll still be buying BF3 on day one.
Life After Minecraft: What Notch Wants to Do Next – In short: a space trading game, a Sims-like chronicle of daily life, or literal fantasy football. As in, trolls, elves, and the like. Our take? Dude made Minecraft. He could announce a new Barbie Horse Adventures game and we'd be chomping at the bit to play it.
Blizzard Talks E-Sports Influences on StarCraft II's Creation – Everyone knows that StarCraft's an important part of any balanced e-sport breakfast, but it's actually sort of incredible just how much e-sporting shaped StarCraft II's development. Designer Dustin Browder's reflection on the process is a must-read for fans.
Epic's Bleszinski: Triple-A Development Isn't Dying – Granted, that's only one of the many topics he covered in an excellent GDC talk. We don't necessarily agree with all of it (“middle” development is dead? Try telling that to Runic, Double Fine, and 5th Cell), but it's a fascinating read nonetheless.
IGF Awards Are The Best Thing – Last week, some of the world's best indie game devs gathered for the most charming, passionate award show you'll ever see. Oh, and the video's full of amazing games you've probably never heard of, too. We'd call this a win-win, but that's selling it short. Does anyone have some spare “wins” we could tape onto that?
