Gauntlet Thrown: The Old Republic Matches WoW's Subscription Fee, Gets Release Date
Every MMO with any sense is headed for the bountiful hills of free-to-play, and it's not hard to see why: Down in subscription valley, two Godzilla-sized juggernauts are about to go to war. In one corner, we have perennial 800 lb gorilla king World of Warcraft, and in the other, EA's own Death Star, The Old Republic. And as it turns out, TOR's decided to rush WoW head-on this holiday season. That's right: $15 a month. It's as if a million wallets cried out in terror and weren't suddenly silenced – but will be eventually after many expansion packs and half-hearted utterances of “Oh, I'll cancel it later.”
On top of that, the different subscription tiers are even shamelessly cribbed from WoW's notes, with a bulk three month package totaling out to $13.99/month and six months going for $12.99/month.
So, when will BioWare's opus get into an extremely fatal collision with your social life? Why, December 20, of course – just in time for you to weasel out of holiday family obligations to go play it. After all, what did family ever do for you? If you're anything like us, you were raised by the scene where Darth Vader cuts off Luke's hand. And you liked it.

We really can't expect an MMO to have graphics only fit for high end video cards. I mean, really, if that were the case, the first M would be completely superfluous. And as long as the content continues, varies, and is (pray to the good Lord above) innovative and fun, my $15 a month will help this game be KOTOR 3, 4, and 5!
My only fear is that I am excited about this as I was about STO, and that one was a grand disillusionment!

Have you played STO lately? It's gotten MUCH better than it was at launch and will be free to play before year's end. I plan on playing both - and I've played the SW:TOR beta and can say that it will have it's own set of growing pains. The great thing about MMO's though is they're not static - they truly can get better with time.

Apparently they also copied WoW's 7-year old combat and archetype systems. "The Old Republic" is kinda long and wordy, perhaps "World of Jedi" would be more appropriate.
Hey BioWare and EA, 2003 called and they're tired of you ripping off their fresh MMO ideas.

Um, it's called "The Old Republic" because it's sort of based on the game series "Knights of the Old Republic".
Fail troll.

i played in one of those beta weekends and I was impressed enough to want to buy some EA stock. Not supposed to talk about it but it was killer. Equal parts KOTOR and WOW. And 3d vision worked great with it too. I haven't been this excited about a future game in 10 years. Only problem is now i have a social life... and a career. Ah well at least with this one you can play it in bits and pieces if you want and enjoy the story.

I'm with Xeones on this one. I'm in the full beta and loving it. Definitely keeping my preorder.

On the flip side for me, after playing it I cancelled my preorder.
It tries to be two games but fails in both. They should have just given us KOTOR 3.
It has the most out dated gameplay I've seen in an MMO in the last 3 years.
