Crysis 2 Leak Fails to Make Huge Impact, Crytek Thanks Community
Remember when the sky fell last week? Of course you don't. You were too busy fussing over the Crysis 2 leak to notice. Turns out, though, that even being gobsmacked by the unsolicited distribution of its biggest game ever wasn't enough to take the spring out of Crytek's step. There's a simple reason for that: it actually wasn't so bad.
TorrentFreak's stats showed that the still rough-around-the-edges leak only managed to initially garner 10,000 completed downloads. In the grand scheme of piracy related antics, that's like stealing a stick of gum from a convenience store. So, what's the deal? Are people only pretending to be interested in Crysis 2? Nope. Speaking during Gamesblog Live, Crytek's Nathan Camarillo showered an incredibly supportive community with praise.
"What really got us out of that was our fans and the community, and even people who haven't been the biggest fans of Crytek, all jumping to our side,” he explained. “They were saying, 'Don't download it, don't post anything from it, don't participate in file-sharing of this – it's not the final version, so it's not what they want you to see. Don't spoil it for me – I want to see the final version. I'm glad, at least, that it runs on your PC – it runs on my PC as well, but you still shouldn't have downloaded it.'”
“Everybody was very supportive, and the community exercised self-policing in that regard, so it didn't quite erupt like when, for example, a final version is leaked."
We don't really say this often enough, but PC gamers, you're awesome. Give yourselves a nanosuit-powered pat on the back.
