Crysis 2 Leak Fails to Make Huge Impact, Crytek Thanks Community
Remember when the sky fell last week? Of course you don't. You were too busy fussing over the Crysis 2 leak to notice. Turns out, though, that even being gobsmacked by the unsolicited distribution of its biggest game ever wasn't enough to take the spring out of Crytek's step. There's a simple reason for that: it actually wasn't so bad.
TorrentFreak's stats showed that the still rough-around-the-edges leak only managed to initially garner 10,000 completed downloads. In the grand scheme of piracy related antics, that's like stealing a stick of gum from a convenience store. So, what's the deal? Are people only pretending to be interested in Crysis 2? Nope. Speaking during Gamesblog Live, Crytek's Nathan Camarillo showered an incredibly supportive community with praise.
"What really got us out of that was our fans and the community, and even people who haven't been the biggest fans of Crytek, all jumping to our side,” he explained. “They were saying, 'Don't download it, don't post anything from it, don't participate in file-sharing of this – it's not the final version, so it's not what they want you to see. Don't spoil it for me – I want to see the final version. I'm glad, at least, that it runs on your PC – it runs on my PC as well, but you still shouldn't have downloaded it.'”
“Everybody was very supportive, and the community exercised self-policing in that regard, so it didn't quite erupt like when, for example, a final version is leaked."
We don't really say this often enough, but PC gamers, you're awesome. Give yourselves a nanosuit-powered pat on the back.

Are we simply gauging gamers response for a smaller printing run?

I'll buy this game when it supports steam works no sooner no latter. Good job on turning your back on your biggest market Crytek. Crappy console ports FTW!

The reason no one bothered to Pirate it is because a crappy console port isn't worth the HDD space. No thanks, Crytek.

The general rule of thumb is that if one doesn't want something leaked, they make sure that it doesn't happen.

Yeah, that's a tremendous leap of faith saying that the reason something wasn't pirated is because PC gamers were too noble to steal it. Free is the price any gamer can pay, and when you're talking about a download-centered PC population, the idea that this didn't get downloaded because people wanted to do the right thing and wait til release to pay $60 for what could be a subpar game is pure nonsense.
Whatever the reason, people DIDN'T want it. That's the bottom line. Crytek wants to paint all PC gamers as saints for this, but the bottom line is their game was not even attractive enough to STEAL. Best of luck to you, Crytek.

More specifically, no one wanted to download a huge file of an uncompleted game. I agree with your first paragraph, though.

I've actually seen people on Steam playing the leaked beta. They actually added it to their Steam games list so everyone could see them playing Crysis 2. I talked to one of them and he said he stilled planned on buying a copy for the PS3 and PC. The idea that people would rather play an unpolished beta with no multiplayer than the final version just because it's free is absurd. I bet everyone who downloaded it just wanted to try it out since there isn't a demo for PC yet.

Having seen the leaked version, it wasn't anything to write home about.
It barely ran, you had to jump through hoops just getting it to work, exactly as would have been expected on something that early in development.
I'm not entirely sure what the fuss was about. I guess if you could wrangle it into working long anough you could spoil the game for everyone, maybe.

I'm thinking a lot of people just assumed their computers couldn't run it, and didn't bother.

This is the best thing I've heard all day. PC gamers are the best people in the world, and PC games are the best games there are.
