Computer Reads Civilization Instruction Manual, Actually Learns
Well now, that's nice and chilling. Yes, computers are reading now, apparently. What about? Oh, nothing really. Just a game that spans the entirety of human history and military conquest. And – thanks to some delightful MIT researchers – said computers can now absorb knowledge like sponges who can also read. But hey, at least the first step in our eventual hubris-ridden annihilation is really damn interesting.
“When the researchers augmented a machine-learning system so that it could use a player’s manual to guide the development of a game-playing strategy, its rate of victory jumped from 46 percent to 79 percent,” said a report from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab.
Apparently, the ability to read the manual's text – not necessarily its contents, but specific wordings – contributed majorly to the AI's computerized conquest, too. To be clear, all the researchers taught their progeny was how to read about Civ – not how to actually play.
“The researchers also tested a more-sophisticated machine-learning algorithm that eschewed textual input but used additional techniques to improve its performance. Even that algorithm won only 62 percent of its games,” read the report.
Obviously, this could turn traditionally lackluster videogame AIs into forces to be reckoned with. Just lay down some ground rules, let your AI give them a once (or one-million times in a minute) over, and return to find everything you know and love in ashes. Or, er, you know, videogames!

It'll be a long way, if it's even possible, a bunch of mere electric circuits can become self-aware.
... but when the day comes: I welcome our new robot overlords.

So they programmed their AI with the FreeCiv manual that basically would play against the standard AI programmed with whatever the original developers programmed it with.

The Spammers Are Back. For a web site to call its self MaximumPC and yet be riddled with spam makes you people look incompitent and stupid. Go ask PC Gamer or PopSci how they clean up spam, and follow them.

You know what don2041? That's an excellent idea. I did ask PC Gamer how they clean up spam and Logan told me the following: We have no active spam filter on our site, but do have editors in two continents receiving spam reports and acting on them around the clock, which works very well for us. If we didn't have this kind of support, our comment experience would certainly suffer.
So, there's your answer: PC Gamer has a full-time staff literally working around the clock, dedicated to removing spam....vs our system which currently consists of me. Manually deleting spam as fast as I can. We do sincerely appreciate all of our readers being patient while we work on rolling out better solutions and we know it's not an ideal situation.
Also, we really liked the way you misspelled "incompitent" - very ironical.

HAHAHA! Beautiful. Amber, quick question. If a reader sees SPAM that hasn't been deleted/noticed yet, and if we post a reply just saying "spam" or something, does that make it easier for you find it? Or does it just add another entry you need to delete. I and some other posters try to tag spam when we find it. Keep on trucking.
