Rig of the Month: 8-bit Black Mage

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

Some people want their rigs to be an approximation of what computers will look like at some point in the far-off future. Richard Clinton, though, wanted to look back to a simpler time: the 8-bit era. But while computer technology was less complex back then, building the Black Mage was anything but easy.

In order to re-create his favorite Final Fantasy II character type, Richard organized, glued, and painted 2,000 1”x1” cubes. All told, it took four months to assemble the Black Mage. To see the process shortened to 10 minutes, check out Richard’s build video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoUVgK65FIA.

ok, i'm just being a stick in the mud here, but really?  everyone knows that this is the black mage from Final Fantasy 1 on the Nintendo (8-bit).  FF II was on the SNES (16-bit).  i'll grant you that, technically, the black mage is also a character type in FF II but Rydia and Tellah looked nothing like this iconic FF I character.

regardless, this is a cool-arse case mod.  thanks for sharing!

Wow, just noticed they put my case on the website! Awesome!

Yes, he looks nothing like Tellah (lol). It was most likely a typo. Thanks for your comments guys.

I am taking the black mage to Million Man Lan in july so look around for him!

Looks to be a USB or otherwise powered plasma ball that was taken off its base and remounted on the staff. You can pretty much pick them up almost anywhere online, I bought one myself from ThinkGeek a while back when it was on sale.
