For Extra Refreshment, Get XP SP3 RC2 Now!

Yesterday, Microsoft rolled out a script for Windows XP SP2 users that enables Release Candidate 2 (RC2) of the forthcoming Service Pack 3 release to be downloaded via Windows Update. Get the script here.

Preparations

If you've been waiting to try SP3 until now, you're ready to run the script. However, if you installed a previous release candidate, uninstall it first. Windows Update will not offer RC2 to systems running other release candidates.

Before you install SP3 RC2, be sure to take a look at the Release Notes. Some highlights include:

  • - How to install SP3 RC2 on Macs with Intel processors running Windows XP
  • - Why European versions of XP ('N' versions) can't slipstream SP3 RC2 with their current XP discs
  • - Which font families might not print properly on PCL printers
  • - New features and functionality in SP3

You might also want to take a look at the white papers available at the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Resources for IT Professionals website. Enjoy!

avatarAfter the Vista pre-SP

After the Vista pre-SP update problems, why exactly would I trust them with WinXP SP3? Unless there's some reason to load it sooner, I think I'll wait a bit before loading.

avatarNot so Fast

Got querky when I installed--uninstalled.
Then I had to restore to before it had downloaded the "auto update " to keep that from popping all the time. Everything is running better without it.

avatarThings missing from MS' "whitepaper"

Why did MS not list some changes made to XP with SP3?
For instance, the taskbar's 'Address' toolbar has been removed due to browser integration/legal issues (the browser would seem to be too integrated with the operating system)?! Where is that in the "whitepaper"?

What else has changed that they aren't telling us?!
